Shea encloses circulars sent out privately by Archbishop Michael Corrigan. The Catholic press was not told because there was no wish for publicity. Shea requested no circular be sent to McMaster as he knew he would respond quickly. The whole movement is ascribed to McMaster's frequent and kindly appeals in his behalf. When suggested he take a salary, Shea proposed the present plan of subscription. He hopes that McMaster will appreciate that it was pure friendship that prompted him to keep McMaster from doing anymore for him.

Edes, Ella B.: Rome, (Italy)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Edes made an error in reporting that the Duke Sahiati would not return to Rome until sometime in January. She has had his receipt since January 31, but put off sending it until she completed an article on St. Francis of Assissi. Edes was happy to see Father-General (Edward Sorin, C.S.C.) on his recent visit to Rome. In the photo of the Baltimore Bishop's Council, which she received, Sorin was the only one she could recognize. She was shocked by the death of Daniel Paul. Archbishop (Michael A.) Corrigan wrote her of Paul's death and encloses his letter for Hudson to read. The Irish conference terminated May 15th, and not one work leaked out relative to the proceedings. All that appeared in the Herald was lies. Mori seems to be the source of false information. By use of influence he was named Honorary Canon of the Cathedral of Florence over the violent opposition of the Archbishop.

Dallas, A(lexander) I.: San Antonio, Fl(orid)a
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Dallas is glad that Hudson has recovered from his illness. San Antonio is having a slight epidemic of bilious dysentery, but Dallas' family is in good health. After reading Hudson's advice he is obliged as a Christian to acquiesce but he is unable to act it out. If he did, (Edmund) Dunne would claim a triumph, which would have no fruit for himself or Dunne. Dallas is not the only one in the settlement for whom Dunne entertains a dislike. Hudson's letter reveals he understands Dunne's character. Dunne's conduct must be attributed to ignorance and obtuseness. Dallas's fault was that he opposed Dunne's policy of keeping the school in the church to the exclusion of the Blessed Sacrament and had the support of the pastor and Bishop (John) Moore. Dunne refused to yield to either and wrote an insubordinate letter to Moore, which Moore read with his reply to Dallas in the presence of Father (C.) Peterman of Tampa, where their pastor had taken refuge. Dallas then built the school house at the request of Moore and Dunne immediately ceased to recognize him. When Dr. Havard visited Dallas, Dunne saluted both of them and his conduct convinced Dallas that Dunne's only purpose was to show his charity was greater than Dallas's. Dallas has attempted to clear up the misunderstanding between himself and Dunne, but to no avail. He has reached an understanding with Father (J. F.) O'Boyle. Dallas thanks Hudson for the book.

Walter, Father J(acob) A.: Washington, (District of Columbia)

Walter asks McMaster to accept his apology for the letter to (Maurice Francis) Egan. He is glad he was mistaken. He encloses a copy of the appointment of Father Jos(eph) A. Stephan. Stephan cannot help his connexion with the Catholic Indian Bureau. Walter always thought it batter that some one act as agent of the Bishops and thus do away with any Bureau. He proposed this to Archbishop (James R.) Bayley before the Bureau was formed. Walter did not approve of the course of Father (John B. A.) Brouillet. He should have said the money was for the Bureau and not for the Indians. Stephan sent McMaster some time ago a photo of Sitting Bull, also a pair of buffalo horns.

She thanks him for the volumes of Pere Surui. Seventy boxes of strawberries were received full and four empty. They were in fair condition but had to be used the first day. She had a letter from (Sister) Gertrude but as she will not be writing to her for some time she would like McMaster to tell her that Sister M. Gonzaga's profession is being put off because it would trouble the Archbishop too much. The Archbishop's sermon during the confirmation was beautiful, spiritual and practical for the children.
