If the pictures are exposed to public veneration, there are indulgences attached. The Bishop of Salford, (Herbert Vaughan), says the Heart must not be separated from the Body; the 12 promises are objected to here and the matter is before the Holy Office. They will take him to Louisville, (Kentucky), where Gallagher will send the remainder of the route—from Louisville to New York. All (in New York) are well, Joe Keiley having recovered from the measles. P.S. Mich(ae)l Slattery of Clarksville, Tenn. has remitted $2.50 and still owes $.75.

John has acknowledged receiving Gallagher's letter of (June) 12, (1885), but not Joe Keiley's, which was mailed the same day. Mr. Michael Kelly of Parkersburg, W.Va., has remitted $3.00, and should be credited. Gallagher was not surprised to hear of John's travelling from 3:30 a.m. until 1:30 a.m. the following morning. He knew John must be travelling day and night to cover such distance so rapidly. John's father, (Maurice Francis) Egan and all the folks are well. They have had a hot spell (in New York).

Dorsey, Anna Hanson: (Washington, District of Columbia)
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Dorsey delayed writing until Hudson returned from Detroit. She comments at length on (Charles Warren Stoddard's) book "A Troubled Heart". The Dorsey family has experienced much excitement lately, first Angie (Dorsey) was threatened with blindness, then Dorsey's grandson was appointed assistant paymaster to Paymaster (John) Furey and finally her granddaughter, Lee Mohun, at St. Mary's, Ohio, wrote that she was going to the novitiate at Lyons in June to prepare herself for Congo missions. Without the common sense of Mother Francis, Bishop (John) Watterson and a letter from Father Kelly, she would have gone. Like St. Peter, Dorsey wanted to cut off someone's ear for there is no need of going to the Congo for missionary work since there are 70,000 negroes in Washington and vicinity. Nell (Ella Lorraine Dorsey) is winning recognition, she submitted a short story to Harpers and received seventy-five dollars. Dorsey submits the first chapter of her story "Palms". She has also just about completed a story for young girls which she will submit shortly. Dorsey asks Hudson to advance her some money on it.

She is learning day by day that however much pain there may be in the end, it is best that things should have been as they were.

(McMaster; James Alphonsus): (New York, New York)
to (John Alphonsus McMaster): (Vicksburg, Mississippi?)

McMaster received John's second letter from Natchez. In his first John mistook McMaster's meaning. He has not ceased to trust John but thinks he is perhaps ever confident. Twenty years of experience may teach him things he does not know. A short note telling that he does not forget his prayers or that he has received Communion is enough to cheer McMaster, for John must not forget the necessity of grace. He is not trying to be gloomy when he says this.

John's letter from Wheeling has been received and, in answer to his questions, John's father will not be in Balt(im)o(re) this week, and asks John to go it alone. Gallagher is glad John has skipped the Penn(sylvani)a towns, which he can visit later. The sooner he comes back, the better pleased they will all be. This is Gallagher's second letter to Cumberland; he is also sending papers today. He wishes John "Good luck" until he sees him, this being his last letter.

(McMaster) S.H.C.J., Sister S(aint) John: Sharon Hill, Del(aware) Co(unty) P(ennsylvani)a
to (James Alphonsus McMaster): (New York, New York)

(Sister) S(aint) John is writing for the Mother who was stung by a poisonous fly. Mother is pleased (McMaster) is interested in the Indians and so has written to Mother H. Anthony to forward a memorandum about them. She thanks him for Sister M. Gonzaga for the Mass and Communion. Today is the anniversary of her cure from a hip-disease by Our Lady of Lourdes. She is afraid she was not thankful enough then but she is trying to make it up now. P.S. Of course she will think of the others on the 5th.

M(ahan), J(ohn) W.: Washington, D.C.
to Austin (E. Ford: New York, New York)

He thanks (Ford) for the check. (Patrick Ford's) ideas run in the same channel as his; it was the case with the article on the part taken by the clergy and he has mapped out a special chapter for the part taken by the Sisters of Charity and Sisters of Mercy. He will drive around to see Ballen. Mahan's Meagher article will please Patrick and others and he hopes it will lead to a closer study of old Irish legends and the history of Ireland. It is lamentable how little the young Irish Americans know of these matters. He speaks of his writing (General Thomas Francis) Meagher's life. From what Mahan saw when in New York, he thinks Ford works too hard. The Irish World has a staff sufficient for a daily; Ford should tell them what to do and have them attend to tasks at once. He had an idea for a "Grand Army Irish World" and speaks of increasing circulation. (Ford) should remember the photographs of Archbishop (John) Hughes and Father (Sylvester?) Malone. He has some orders for the book. He received a letter from Macnamara which speaks for itself. A letter from Patrick would help.

Macnamara, Daniel G.: Boston, (Massachusetts)
to Major (John W. Mahan: Washington, D.C.)

Under the change in the character of the city of Boston, the new Police Commissioners are to be appointed by the Governor, Geo(rge) D. Robinson. His name has been mentioned as one of the three. Mahan may be able to suggest someone who can help him get the appointment. It is considered the Governor will selected two out and out Americans and one of Irish nationality. Patrick Ford, Col. A.A. Rend, General Martin, Dr. Green, or W.W. Doherty might have influence or say a word in his behalf.

Van Ness, Elise: (Torresdale, Pennsylvania)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Van Ness thanks Hudson for celebrating Mass for her late stepmother. She hopes Hudson has improved in health and spirit. Everyone admires the story "A Child of Mary" appearing in recent issues of the Ave Maria. Is C(harles) W. Stoddard the brother of R. S. Stoddard, who was sent to Athens as Consul by the United States government.
