1885 Sep. 1
Mahan, John W.: Gettysburg, P(ennsylvani)a
to Austin (E. Ford: New York, New York)

He had about given up the idea that "Irish-American Valor in the War for the Union" had further attractions for (Ford), as he wrote him so frequently in the past three months without effect. He went to Gettysburg to recruit his health and to write a full history of the Gettysburg campaign for a Washington newspaper, and has obtained some way valuable historical facts and reminiscences. He discusses his stay at Gettysburg. He placed an immense amount of work in the safe of the Deposit Company and has written for some of it to be sent to him. He would withhold some of his new material if Ford and his uncle (Patrick Ford) are determined upon continuing the work. He gives the plan of his book, the order of handling Civil War battles, and changes that he proposes in the material used and unused. He has had two publishing houses after his work, but will give preference to the Fords. He would prefer to have Patrick's name associated with his history. Some of the illustrations (Ford) sent for his comment were very good, others were ridiculous. He speaks of the illustrations explaining his point of view. He has written to Father ( ) White. He asks (Ford) to look over his letters and try to answer his questions and comply with his requests. He wants most of all a proof of all the material already furnished. He discusses financial arrangements and sends his regards to the ford family. P.S. Col. Meade, son of General (George Gordon) Meade, and Col. H.W. Biddle, of Meade's staff, have been with him several days and will interest themselves in his work.

to James (F. Edwards): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

He is a life subscriber; he thinks they ought to send it even though he has no money for the postage. He cannot do any work. He made a geography of the dioceses of France before the revolution which he cannot have published; these are the old dioceses. He had begun a like work to the United States, but it is not complete.

If God wills a prolonged life for him, he has time for many more jewels in his crown. She asks him if he remembers the sermon by Father Fidelis (Stone) at the dedication of a new altar at the Passionate Monastery. The basis of this sermon was used for the Dedication of the churches for her order. Tonight the lesson to be read begins, "The Life of man upon earth is a warfare. Brownson) for the Church, which he hopes to have enclosed for winter. The can will be most acceptable and Hudson thanks Brownson for it. Notre Dame has a stick that belonged to Bishop (Frederick) Baraga and another that was used by Price (Demetrius) Gallitzin.

Muir, Marion: (Morrison, Colorado)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Muir knows what Hudson says of marriage is true, but desperate cases require desperate remedies. If Hudson knew her position after the flight she has made for a living, he would not wonder that she accepted any honorable offer of shelter. She doesn't think that one ever attempted to hurt her good name. People who knew her wouldn't believe it. Professor (Arthur) Stace read her letters to a man who spread more than truth all through Denver, but he does not amount to much. Professor (Joseph) Lyons is a gentleman so far as she knows.

Gallagher's little daughter Gertie has been very sick, and the doctors hold little hope for her. They recommend the country air as a last resort, so Mrs. G(allagher) is going to the country. Gallagher's son Jack was sent to school, but is now being kept at home until he is more civilized. All the folks (in New York) are well, and send regards.

Meline, Mary M.: Cincinnati, (Ohio)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: Notre Dame, Indiana)

Meline was disappointed by Hudson's criticism and rejection of her article. For years she has been knocking at the door of the Catholic World and only partially succeeded, but now she has given up after the trash Monsignor (Robert) Seton writes was preferred to her stories. If Father (Augustine) Hewit were to take the helm her stories would have a chance. As for the Fireside it is a year since Meline washed her hands of it. As for Mr. Dunne the saying, a shoemaker should stick to his last is apropos. Meline inquires if the Baltimore Publishing Company sent Hudson her last story. She asks Hudson to return her manuscript.

Maurice (francis Egan) has returned but McMaster has not seen him. He encloses Mrs. Egan's letter. Rose Starr asked if John had any old clothes her brother could wear, and McMaster asks John to describe any he may have. It will be giving to charity. McMaster tells John to skip small places, and hurry over his route. so as to get home. In the meantime he should not keep up his spirits by drinking. McMaster himself has not touched distilled liquor since last Tuesday, and does not intend to until John gets back, believing himself better off without it. He takes lagar at dinner, and if he feels much exhausted in the evening he takes a glass of wine.

Dorsey, A(nna) H(anson): (Washington, District of Columbia)
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Dorsey is grateful to (Maurice Francis) Egan for writing the sketch "The Tenant of Gable End", but she is disturbed about the inaccuracies in the article. She has always written while under stress and feels she has missed her aim. Her best works, she feels, have been done for the Ave Maria. Except for one story, "Father Clement" by Father (Charles) Pise, S.J., Dorsey's stories were the first Catholic stories by an American writer. She was windowed in 1861, when her daughter, Nellie (Ella Lorraine) Dorsey, was five and not at an earlier age. It was "May Brooke" and not "Sister of Charity" which was issued in Edinburgh, Scotland. Another mistake is that her serials which appeared in the Ave Maria are alluded to as having appeared in book form, this is incorrect. The dragging in of Mrs. Burnell and Mrs. Southworth was unnecessary. She thanks Hudson for the photograph of Bishop (John L.) Spalding. Bishop (John Joseph) Keane said of him, "in literature and eloquence Bishop Spalding stands at the head of the American Hierarchy".

Dorsey sends the third chapter of "Palms". She discusses the plot and background of her story. Dorsey sends for Hudson's perusal a letter received from the Sisters of Charity at Donaldsonville, Louisiana. She asks Hudson to correct their mistaken belief that her serial stories in the Ave Maria, with a few exceptions do not appear in book form. Dorsey is glad to see a beginning of war reminiscences of a Catholic type in the Ave Maria. Its readers might be interested to know the difficulties Dorsey had in getting (Edwin) Staunton to invite the Sisters of Charity to become Army nurses. If Hudson cares for it, Dorsey will send it as soon as she gets the correspondence from the War Department.

Sister thanks Hudson for copies of "A Troubled Heart" and "Our Lady of Good Counsel". The Irish Land League is ruining the peasantry since it has demoralized the people and destroyed their love for their clergy. All who joined the Land League must attend meetings that caused a loss of a day's work which a poor Irish family could ill afford to lose. Spain has been afflicted with an epidemic of cholera while Portugal has been spared.

Father (Philip M.) Colonel of the Redemptorists stationed at St. Alphonsus in New York has just published a manual of hymns intended to promote congregational singing. The Bishops of the Province of New York in their last Provincial Council held shortly before the Plenary Council of Baltimore expressed the desire that the elements of music be taught in all the schools. They wish that choral or congregational singing would become universal in Catholic churches. The book is well adapted to accomplish this purpose.
