She is glad he is travelling through New York State where the scenery is so beautiful; and she wonders if the part about the Mohawk is liked the western part. Niagara Falls should strengthen his faith in the good God who has created such beautiful things. She asks if it was altogether sleepiness that caused him to scratch out a sentence in his letter, and looks forward to his completing it. His father spoke kindly of him.

If John wants his red flannels, they will be sent before his winter suit, but he should not wait until the sudden cold weather to order his suit. McMaster visited his daughters and found them all well. S(iste)r Gertrude (McMaster, D.C.) was getting fat. McMaster is well. Dorsey, Anna H(anson): (Washington, District of Columbia)
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

When Dorsey wrote that her stories were short she meant they were not serials, for she does not consider a story long even though it extends through three or four months. She finds that leading Catholic magazines in England and the United States continue to publish serials which keep the readers interest in both the story and magazine. Short stories are forgotten as soon as read and Dorsey feels she has no talents for writing them. Her object in writing a story is to illustrate what Catholic or Christian life should be and is not. She comments on the misunderstanding about her story "Palms". Is it too late to withdraw her story "Mad Penitent" from the press? She approves Hudson's plan, but is unwilling that publishing of her works in book form not begin until the subscriptions justify paying for the whole. How would it do to get Bishop (John J.) Keane of Richmond to write something for a circular on the series of books that would circulate among the American Hierarchy. Archbishop (James) Gibbons, she is sure would commend it. Dorsey thought the person who wrote the sketch about Admiral Kelty made a mistake in ascribing to Sister Josephine what was really due to Mother A.

Murray, Thomas Hamilton: Boston, Mass(achusetts)
to Richard H(enry) Clarke: (New York, New York)

About a year ago several gentlemen discussed the large number of Americans who have "gone over to Rome". The subject proved so interesting that Murray decided to bring out a small volume on the subject and to include a list of the prominent converts with two or three lines of biography concerning each. Murray hopes to finish the work soon. Many of the clergy and laity to whom he mentioned the project sent him lists of converts. Among these were Henry (F.) Brownson of Detroit, Father James H. Corrigan of Seton Hall, Mrs. Helen L. Bradford of Baltimore, and Father (Joseph) Keller, S.J., late President of St. Louis University. Murray has the names of a few New York converts and he asks for a list from Clarke.

(Egan, Maurice, Francis): Brooklyn, (New York)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

(James) McMaster and Egan are friends, and Hudson can see that Egan's position in light of Hudson's note requires patience and tact. He asks Hudson to pay attention to David Munro, of Harper's Magazine, who will be at Notre Dame next week. Egan persuaded Munro to place his son, Roderick, at Notre Dame. Tell (James F.) Edwards Egan will send the mitre he wishes. Eliot Ryder called and Egan did what he could for him. He does not like to talk freely with Ryder for he repeats the wrong things to the wrong people. Ryder is dying and does not seem to realize it. Egan's writings in the Ave Maria have made many friends for him.

MacDonnell, S(ister) M(ary) Magdalene: (Lisbon, Portugal)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The new white wool habits are difficult to keep clean and to get supplies of. They could wear white silk more cheaply. Sister does not forget Isabella Brown but the lady who lent her the sketch locked up the journal containing the sketch. D. Maria de Gloria sails for Brazil on the 13th. She has to leave Europe to her great regret. Monsignor (Cajetan) Masella tells Sister that hypnotism has attracted the attention of the Italian government and that the Jesuits have written against it in Civilta Cattolica. Sister has read of the influence of hypnotism on plants. Many persons make no distinction between spiritism and mesmerism. There were stirring times at Notre Dame with the General Chapter. They expect the Provincial from Ireland this month to hold their Visitation. Monsignor (John Baptist) Guidi is always scolding them for being too "severe" but Sister told him he had no right to censure them for obeying existing laws. They say the Nunzio will soon be recalled to Rome and made successor to Cardinal (Ludovici) Jacobini.

Galwey, T. F.: New York, (New York)
to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.: Notre Dame, Indiana

Galwey realizes how unsuitable his article "Covering the Retreat" is for the Ave Maria and requests its return. He has more material for more war articles if Hudson is interested. Hudson's note on Bishop (Louis) Rappe is evidence of the loyalty of that prelate during the Civil War. Had others been as solicitous for the spiritual welfare of the soldiers as he was, Galwey would have more to write about the work of chaplains. As he lay wounded in a field hospital on the day of the battle of Horseshoe at Spotsylvania, May 2, 1864, numerous dying Catholics cried in vain for a Catholic priest. He saw the harm that political prejudice was capable of doing when allowed to exercise and influence in religious matters. Galwey believes there were but three Catholic chaplains in Hancock's Corps of 40,000 men.

M(ahan), J(ohn) W.: Washington, D.C.
to Austin (E. Ford: New York, New York)

He sends by this mail reminiscences of General (Joseph Bradford?) Carr reconstructed to avoid any language that might look as though it was prepared for political effect. Ford should find out what the General thinks of it. Mahan thinks no account has been published of this part of the line at Gettysburg where Carr's brigade was in action. He discusses the handling of proof. He thinks there is a good demand for the life of Meagher; Meagher's words of 1848 would be appropriate now if (Charles Stuart) Parnell really said that if Ireland were given a legislative body she would stand up loyally and fight for the Empire as devotedly as any of England's colonies. That is bosh, and he would not give a dime to such a movement. He will send a photograph of himself taken on a visit to Gettysburg; Ford already has one taken in uniform in 1863.

(Gallagher), John (J.): New York, (New York)
to J(ohn Alphonsus McMaster): Cortland, (New York)

John's letters and lists of new subs(cribers) have been received. John sent 10 subs(cribers) in all from Senaca Falls, (New York). John must have struck a poetic turn of mind in his last letter No. 11, which was worthy of Maurice F(rancis Egan). Gallagher asks how John likes the Freeman this week, in its new (type). They had difficulty getting it out and were almost stopped when the letters "h" and "n" ran out. John's tailor brought his clothes this morning. John must need them now; the weather in New York is cold and raw. Gallagher will send a short note to Binghamton, (New York) as well as this letter to Cortland. He also sent a package of papers to Binghamton.

Jenkins received Hudson's long letter. His suggestion induced Jenkins to buy McCloud. Hudson may return the packet if he does not care to see the sequel. Jenkins criticizes the Ave Maria. Hudson predicts further patronage and improvement of the Ave Maria. Hudson's general and his staff are the most persistent and never-tiring advertizers in his line on the continent. But too much propagandism often defeats itself. This may be a damper on any vanity in contemplation of success achieved.

A partial operation in April gave temporary relief and a more thorough one in May relieved him entirely. He spent the summer at the sea-side recovering. Corcoran feels honored to contribute to the personal reputation of Bishop (Patrick Neeson) Lynch, unless the work is already completed. Corcoran suggests meeting Clarke in New York on Oct. 28 and 29. Gallagher is well satisfied with the remittance, for the other agents, who do not work so hard as John and are not as unsparing of themselves, would not send so much. John should not overdo it, however, for a heavy cold and even pneumonia are easily contracted. Gallagher has ordered John's cards, and will send them. The photo of John's father will be sent to Mr. ( ) Krelly, Seneca Falls, (New York). Gallagher is glad that John likes the Freeman's new (format). If it were not in mourning this week it would lock better than ever. Father (J.J.) Hamel, Olean, N.Y., wants John to call on him Saturday, so that he can get some new subs(cribers) for the Freeman on Sunday, and Gallagher has thanked him, assuring him John would call if possible. He asks John to keep the office posted of his address 5 to 7 days in advance of the day he writes his letters. All are well, and John's father is going to Balt(im)o(re) tomorrow. P.S.  to J(ohn Alphonsus McMaster): Rochester, (New York)

John's letters and remittance of $75.00 have been received. Gallagher thought the (Pocket) stamp would please John, and will see that everything bearing John's mark will be "chalked" to his credit. He himself will probably make the "down-east" trip after election. They had contemplated moving the Freeman office, for the present office is unhealthy and is getting worse; but on finding they were responsible for the rent until May 1, (1886), decided not to move until then. (Maurice Francis) Egan has moved. Everyone is well. P.S. They have an adv(ertisement) of Harper's this week, 25 per-cent of which goes to John.

to (John) Alphonsus (McMaster): (Rochester, New York)

Thinking this letter would not reach John at Clean, (New York,), McMaster sends this to Rochester. McMaster's best friends in Rochester are Patrick Barry and his sons, whose nursery and horticulture are the greatest in the known world. John should see the grounds if they invite him. McMaster misses John very much. He spent St. Teresa's day in Baltimore, and heard F(ather) P(atrick) Ryan's great sermon, which was reprinted in next day's Freeman. The Sisters spoke lovingly of John, as did (Sister) St. John (McMaster, S.H.C.J.) the next day, although she was suffering a good deal. Sister Teresa (McMaster, D.C.) is suffering greatly from her stomach. McMaster writes a short letter, to set an example. He urges John to supply himself instantly with all the warm clothing he needs; he may either write McMaster, asking him to get it, or get it himself in inland towns. He is asked to tell McMaster if he has taken colds.
