(1886?)
Beck, (Father?) B(errard?): (Baltimore, Maryland?)
 to (James Alphonsus McMaster): (New York, New York)

In a letter written for publication in the Freeman's Journal, Beck criticizes a reveiw of the English translation of the life of Anne Catherine Emmerich from the German of C.E. Schmőger, C.SS.R. The review appeared in the Catholic Quarterly Review for July (1885), and was critical to the book, especially of the wide use made by Schmőger of Brentano's notes about Sister Emmerich. Beck tries to prove from the facts as they are set forth in the biography, that Clement Brentano was the "Pilgrim" sent by God to be Sister Emmerich's ammanuensis. He finds Schmőger's use of Brentano perfectly justified, and sees no reason why the reviewer in the Catholic Quarterly Review should have found the book so unsatisfactory, when many other reviewers were highly pleased.

Dorsey explains the inaccuracies in part of her story. She inquires if the earthquake that occurred in the Washington area reached Notre Dame. Louis, her grandson, has departed for college. Dorsey, A(nna) H(anson): (Washington, District of Columbia)
 to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Dorsey ill, delayed sending manuscript until tomorrow's mail. The story approaches conclusion. Letter from Nellie (Ella Lorraine Dorsey) tells Dorsey that Noonans like the rest of Catholic (Irish) publishers are a peddling mercenary set of men, who are sharp on the main chance, without caring a dot for the authors on whose brain work they prosper.

X-3-b - A.L.S. - 2pp. - 12mo. - {2}

Madame Yturbide, her cousin, now lives in Mexico City. Dorsey's dautghter, Nellie (Ella Lorraine), is better.

D(orsey), A(nna) H(anson): (Washington, District of Columbia)
 to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Dorsey enumerates the errors made by the printers in publishing her story. She is pleased to learn that the powers at Notre Dame recognize Hudson has enough to do as editor of the Ave Maria. The news that her grandson is seriously ill in the infirmary is upsetting. Has Hudson seen Abbe Roux's book?

(1886)
Dorsey, A(nna) H(anson): (Washington, District of Columbia)
 to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Dorsey wishes to enlist Hudson's aid for her grandson, Louis Mohun, who is to spend the next two years at Notre Dame. When he was at that age which requires home influence to urge on a boy's studies, his father died, followed by extreme illness of his mother for two years. Father (J.A.) Doonan, S.J., a friend of his parents, invited him to Georgetown College of which he was just elected President. It was unfortunate for Louis, who was put to studying Latin and Greek, although only scarcely acquainted with the rudiments of his own language. Of course he was an utter failure and his mother withdrew him. He is bright, with keen powers of observation. Under proper influence he will come out all right. He is straightforward, truthful and practical in his religion, and Dorsey gives an instance of the military character of his piety. She tells Hudson this so that those who are to instruct Louis know why he is so backward in everything. Dorsey will mail more manuscript. Louie leaves on Sunday for Notre Dame.

 to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Dorsey sends another installment of "Bob's Vocation". She discusses the plot of her new story "Saito". Sending the circulars announcing (Anna Hanson Dorsey's) new book keeps her busy. Why couldn't (Charles Warren) Stoddard be made Assistant Editor of the Ave Maria?

Dorsey, E(lla) L(orraine): (Washington, District of Columbia)
 to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Dorsey sends a list of subscriptions for the set of (Anna Hanson Dorsey's) books. Archbishop (Patrick) Ryan has recommended the set to all institutions in the Arch-Diocese of Philadelphia. Is (Eliza Allen) Starr's order for 100 for the first book or for sets? Because of the number of orders, Dorsey thinks the work will be a success. If publication of the work will tax the (Ave Maria Press), Hudson may turn it over to Mrs. Sadlier. What a capital story (T. F.) Galwey's is.

X-3-b - A.L.S. - 5pp. - 4to. - {5}

(1886)
D(orsey), E(lla) L(oraine): (Washington, District of Columbia)
 to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): Notre Dame, Indiana

(Patrick) Donahoe has offered "Zoe's Daughter" to Mama (Anna Hanson Dorsey), but they can not spare the money to buy it. Dorsey has an article about how Mama got (Edwin M.) Stanton to invite the Sisters of Charity to the front during the war. How can this be brought to the eyes of the Bishop of Halifax? The soldiers are not well treated in English garrison towns.

X-3-b - A.L.S. Incomplete - 3pp. - 4to. - {5}

(1886) ( )
Dorsey, E(lla) L(orraine): (Washington, District of Columbia)
 to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Dorsey's mother, (Anna Hanson Dorsey), is going to leave everything in Hudson's hands. The circular that was sent them was most admirable. The Dorsey family has been urging her to marry an English Naval Officer, who has paid her the compliment of addressing her. Dorsey is opposed to the idea because he is a Mason. Which of Dorsey's six stories does Hudson intend to publish first? Her mother regards "Tangled Paths" as the best. Mrs. Dorsey can't understand why she gets pecuniary benefit from the edition because she holds copyrights for only two of the stories.

Dorsey is sorry to learn that the manuscript failed to reach Hudson Saturday even though it was mailed in plenty of time. She is disappointed at Hudson not being able to do the edition. Dorsey wrote (Thomas) Noonan last week and anxiously awaits his answer regarding the publication of her book. Hudson's criticism of her stories is appreciated, and she thanks him for the opportunity to do the Christmas story. (Anna Hanson Dorsey) is finishing the last chapter of her story "Palms". They should like to see (Charles Warren) Stoddard when he comes to Washington.

Ewing is satisfied with $50 for her story, "A Servant". She is waiting for Hudson to send new articles that she can translate. Dr. Howley's poem in a recent issue of the Ave Maria is beautiful. Ewing inquires if Howley has published a book of poems. She tells the story of Archbishop (Patrick) Ryan's discussion of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception with a Protestant clergyman.
