Ryder, E(liot) P(aul): St. Louis, (Missouri)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Ryder's illness is making him most uncomfortable. He is not counting on Professor (Joseph) Lyons visiting him. Ryder is pleased that Hudson liked his story on New Orleans well enough to use it. Hudson overrates his poem "August Night" and must have forgotten that (Maurice Francis) Egan dissected and annihilated it five years ago, but Ryder has faith in Hudson's judgement. As for Century Magazine it is not the magazine which Doctor (Josiah) Holland gave the reader in Scribner's Magazine. Ryder never admired Holland's poetry, but he was a better editor than those who succeeded him, and whom Egan idealizes. The Catholic World pays nothing for poetry and ought to expect nothing but drivel. Ryder criticizes (W. A.) McDermott's which appeared in the May 1st number of the Ave Maria.

He will have trouble with it if he does not do this. Stylographic pens are different, being carried point down. John's father is away at Baltimore; he had expected a letter from John, but the letter arrived only this morning. The weather in New York is nice. Gallagher hopes John is having a pleasant time in New Orleans. All (John's friends) are well and send regards. P.S. (A subscriber) has stopped his paper). John's letter and the papers have been received and she is glad he had such a pleasant visit with his uncle. Sister St. John (McMaster, S.H.C.J.) must have been glad to see him. She is sure Mrs. Keiley did all in her power to make John's birthday a happy one. The death of Major (John J. Keiley's) mother makes Sister Gertrude feel that the old people are slipping away, and makes her feel anxious about their Aunt ( ) Brown. She asks John to enlist Mrs. Keiley's help, and see that their Aunt makes her Easter communion. She feels they owe her very much, for she was very kind when their mother first came to New York. Next Friday will be Sister Teresa (McMaster, D.C.'s) twenty-third birthday. The Mother Superior wondered where the letter from the Father-General which was (reprinted) in the Freeman's Journal came from. She asks John to tell her when he will write the promised letter.  to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Dorsey reports her mother (Anna Hanson Dorsey) too ill to complete the work she is writing for Hudson. Mrs. Dorsey is discouraged by Hudson's comments on her story and she feels "Palms" is her death song. If (Joseph A.) Lyons will publish it with risk of loss, Dorsey would like it copyrighted in her name. Dorsey says she should never have sent her discouraging letter before discussing terms with Ja(me)s Ticknor and his partner Mr. Godfrey for publishing her mother's works. The first edition should be 1500, with copyright profits going to Mrs. Dorsey and Hudson. (John) Boyle O'Reilly visited Ticknor and urged him to bring out the edition. Miss Hamlin of the Boston Herald could not believe all Dorsey told her about Ticknor. Dorsey does not blame Noonan & Company because they are a young firm, but Donahue & Company had a sharp lesson about undertaking a new work. Hamlin states the Catholic publishers in New York and Boston do not know the A. B. C's of advertising.

Filicchi, Patrizio: Pisa, (Italy)
to Elizabeth (Seton: New York, New York)

Elizabeth must think from his protracted silence that he was dead or in his dotage. He is now quite well, but on his 86th birthday, 25th of March, he was taken ill with a fever of the typhoid type. He received the Holy Sacraments. His sister Julia came from Florence, spent a day near his bed, leaving only for a quarter of an hour to visit their Archbishop Count Capponi, her cousin. His daughter, Amabilia, has been his assiduous nurse. He was obliged to remain in bed for thirty-three days. Elizabeth's letter on his birthday was a great comfort. The news of Aunt Kate(Mother Catharine Seton, R.S.M.) was almost a cordial to his heart. He sends her his warmest love. Elizabeth is to shake hands with Robert and with John. Elizabeth's grandmother's portrait with that of her father, friend of Filicchi's youth; of Aunt Kate whom he accompanied daily in her walks; with Filicchi's father's likeness, are just behind the chair in which he is sitting. When Elizabeth goes to St. Joseph's she is to kiss her grandmother's grave and the floor of the room which she left for Paradise. Ubaldo and Amabilia are with him, quite well, as is his wife Eliza. Laura, with her child, is now with them on a visit; his son George is a cavalry captain in Rome.

(McMaster, James Alphonsus): New York, (New York)
to (John Alphonsus McMaster): (Plaquemine, Louisiana)

McMaster sends John two letters that have been waiting for him. He had hoped to write to John in San Antonio, (Texas), and regrets John did not find it possible to have stayed a few days. John went through Texas very rapidly, and succeeded in sending $50.00 twice. McMaster was surprised at this, since he expected to have to send John money. John should not travel too fast, and should see what he wishes to see, since he may never have the opportunity. He asks if Sister Gertrude (McMaster, D.C.) wrote to John of Mrs. Sneeringer, who died an edifying death Good Friday afternoon. Sister Teresa (McMaster, D.C.) had more trouble with her stomach. It seems God's will that she should suffer much. The Keiley's always ask about John, and "Maurice" (Francis Egan?) received John's letter. McMaster sends his letter in care Mrs. (Thomas L.) Grace, to whom John should give his regards. He intends writing John again at Natchez or Vicksburg, (Mississippi). Because of east winds McMaster has been suffering from colds in the head. John has been nice about writing letters frequently. McMaster hopes John can go to Communion on the Feast of the Ascension.

John's note came; Egan was glad to see it, and thanks John for his thoughtfullness at San Antonio, (Texas). He asks why John left that town so soon, for John's father does not want him to be a mere grubber of money, but to see all that is characteristic on the road. John ought to have taken the ride through the Indian Territory. That would have been part of his education. If John only stopped in a city to amuse himself at theaters and in visiting, it would be different. But he ought to see our country, even though he makes no money by it. The deed was made in 1879, from Russel Edwards to M.F. Egan. (Egan reports on some of John's friends.) He asks John to write him. John's father looks well.
