Chatanooga, Tenn(essee)
to (James Alphonsus McMaster):
(New York, New York)
McMaster hears how J(ohn), is from his letters to Mr. Gallagher, but J(ohn) is sure McMaster would like a letter from him once in a while. He asks if McMaster's trip in the revenue-cutter did some good. He supposes they have had little warm weather in New York, whereas he has had three months of very warm weather, with a prospect of two more, since he will get home in August, just about the warmest month. He is looking forward to that time. He asks how the sisters were when McMaster saw them last. He met Bishop (Joseph) Rademacher (of Nashville) who wished to be remembered to him. He also met W.B. Bates, Governor of Tennessee, who hopes to meet McMaster when he gets to New York.

John apologizes for his rude speech to her the other evening. He did not mean what he said, and hardly knew what he was saying, for he was worried over being delayed in Plaquemine so long. He hopes she is well, and hopes she will have the kindness to forget the occurence.

Alemany, O.P., Archbishop J(oseph) S.:
Valencia, Spain
to Father Hugh F. Lilly, O.P.:
(New York, New York)
The agent in Barcelona has received the box of books. Alemany should have written before, but he was very busy translating into Italian the life of a saintly Dominican Sister, much like that of St. Catherine of Sienna, who he hopes will be canonized. Alemany wants to know how much he owes. He might have to purchase some little property adjoining their Dominican Church called El Pilar, where he hears confessions. Several young men have called asking to be received. He has a novice master with him but he could not receive until the General sends two or three more. The people are glad to see the habits of St. Vincent Ferrer.

Brownson finds that any time that Father General (Edward P. Sorin, C.S.C.) and Edwards appoint will be suitable for him to bring the remains of his father (Orestes A. Brownson) to Notre Dame. Father (Ernest) Van Dyke will accompany him, and thinks it better that the remains be removed at once to the chapel being prepared for them, if it will soon be ready.

They had a beautiful conference given them by Father Ryan, S. J. P.S. Mother Louise, Under whose care she is, asks to be remembered to him, and is glad his tonic did him so much good.

Dunbar, Mrs. Catherine:
Paris, (France)
to (James F. Edwards:
Notre Dame, Indiana)
She felt her departure keenly without seeing her loved ones' graves or having anything done for them. How could such cold ingratitude ever find its way there where they have been such tried and true friends of everyone in Notre Dame. The Colonel (Robert Dunbar) took care of Father (M.B.) Brown, (C.S.C.), Father General (Edward Sorin, C.S.C.) and Father (Alexis) Granger, (C.S.C.) with the solicitude of a father for no consideration. Only one thing could recompense him that is gratitude, this she was denied. They paid Father General all they could and more. She asks if there is much Christian religion in it. Why should she be obliged to find a chapel if she didn't see fit? Besides if a person wants one to do anything it should be done graciously. She has abandoned the idea of building altogether. If Father Sorin had invited Father (S.P.) Lalumiere kindly as he ought, he could have told him she did not forget him. Edwards was like a son to her. She will substitute him for her darling son. Edwards is the magnet that brought the people to Notre Dame, his kind heart and gentlemanly deportment. Sorin did not invite her to Notre Dame to see the graves of her husband and son; he can never make that injustice right. Oh to think of the ingratitude of Notre Dame.

1886 June 2,
(McMaster, James Alphonsus):
New York, (New York)
to (John Alphonsus McMaster):
(Vicksburg, Mississippi)
McMaster has received John's letter from Paris, Texas. He was glad to get it, but John's frequent letters to the office keep him posted as to where and how John is. He was sorry John did not accept the invitation to go for a ride about the Indian Territory, since to see the country is a chief part of John's present affair. John should not hurry in case a similar opportunity occurs, for this is different than being in a big city with its many attractions. McMaster has plenty to occupy his time and should not be thought of as lonely; he is satisfied if he hears from John frequently. John should pray for grace, so that he can come back as pure as when he left. Sister Teresa (McMaster, D.C.) has been ill again, as also has. (Sister) St. John (McMaster, S.H.C.J.). McMaster encloses a badge for John. On (June) 9 McMaster will visit the Sisters. He cautions John not to work too hard, and not to let himself run short of money. His health is generally good. He is proud of John.

He arrived from Baton Rouge yesterday to find a batch of letters, including McMaster's. He found San Antonio dull, and left it to go on. He had two pony rides, one at Waxahachie, Texas, and one at Fort Worth, and between Denison and Sherman (Texas), he met with a nearly fatal accident, when a busy, in which he was riding, overturned. He asks McMaster to remember him to the Keileys. He is stopping with Mr. Grace, who refused to let him stop at a hotel.

Gallagher has received John's letters and is sorry John did not take the trip through the Indian Territory. to J(ohn Alphonsus McMaster):
Vicksburg, Miss(issippi)
John's letter from Shreveport, L(ouisian)a written with the temperature at 100 degrees, has been received. In New York it is quite cool and pleasant. The fact that John does not complain, even though he has trouble and annoyance, proves that he has grit. Gallagher supposes John has noticed that everything looks good when collections are good, and looks glum when they are not. John's father and everyone else seems well.

It would be better if McMaster and Auntie Brown stopped there on Friday instead of Wednesday, for on Thursday, (June 10), the Archbishop is to profess some novices. If they come on Friday, they should try to be there before one o'clock, since the Mother Superior has an engagement in the city in the afternoon. Martin, Marguerite:
Paris, France
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Martin is the English translator of Monsieur Lasserre's book "Miraculous Episodes of Lourdes" and the sister of Katherine Martin who wrote to Hudson on the subject of the book. The tone of Hudson's letter encouraged Martin to tell Hudson about her sister's activities. Two years ago, Martin resolved secretly never to accept pecuniary compensation for her book, but made a compact with Our Lady that she would do the book in question if she would convert her sister Katherine. Recently Katherine grieved that Martin had received no compensation for her translation, went to see Archbishop (Michael Corrigan) with a plan to further the sale of the book.

She had a letter from S(iste)r S(ain)t John, whose resignation and gratitude make (Sister) Blandina feel how little she does for God. She asks a favor of McMaster. They have a sodality devoted to S(ain)t Francis Xavier, and cannot get medals; she asks him to tell her where they can get some, or to send them some. M.K. McGrath had see McMaster in New York and reported him as being remarkably well. O'Brien is also asked about John (Alphonsus) McMaster, who he is, and if he is "any good", to which he replies that if he were not "any good" he would not be on the Freeman's payroll. Regarding McMaster's family, O'Brien always says that some, if not all, his daughters are members of religious orders. One of those who inquired about McMaster was (Father) S.P. London, (England)
to (E)Liz(abeth Seton:

Elizabeth's letter of May 28 came two days ago. They spent a very pleasant day at Dillwynn Parrish's country seat. He has renovated the inside of the building which bears the date 1519. Parrish, Sally's first cousin, has it on a long lease. Parrish has made a large fortune by introducing horsecars into London and other towns and he is most liberal. He took all of them to the Ascot races. But the more William sees of England the more American he becomes; he cannot stand their worship of titles. Day after tomorrow they go to Paris. There he will meet Berrian. He has seen Sir George Cayley, a grandson of the old Sir George they saw 28 years ago. William is becoming some what of a Home Ruler since he has seen how the English look down on the Irish. Robert is to tell this to Madelaine. James Parrish will accompany them to France. Herbert King has been cured of his suffering by a French physician. Robert is to remember them to Nina and Temple and give news of them to Nell and Aunt Kate.

She is sending his gift, and wonders which (gift of the Holy Ghost) he will draw. She was able to be in Choir for Terce this morning, the first time in a month. She wonders how the Lord ever chose her for Carmel. She thanks him for his letter last fall. She received a picture that impressed her the other day which seemed a confirmation of his consoling words. S(iste)r Gertrude is Hebdomadory for the first time this week, this great octave is a nice time for her to begin. They had not much consolation from his visit, except they made another soul happier. Seton's letter was received but as he is only able to sit up a little, being slowly recovering from a long attack of rheumatism, his correspondence moves slowly. He thanks Seton for his thoughtfulness in regard to the seal; he regrets now that he got a new seal made since Seton's last letter. He did not want to annoy Seton further, so he gave his old seal to the engraver with some suggestions based on Seton's remarks, and leaving with him the Catholic World containing Seton's heraldry articles. With this the engraver made a modification of the old seal. If he did not have the larger one ordered, he would select Seton's No. 10 which he likes very much.

to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Edes registered the 600 copies of the Madonna. Fathers ( ) Belgrano and ( ) Pfifferi brought them to Edes before she mailed them. She told Belgrano what Hudson said relative to the devotion of the Madonna at Notre Dame. He received his idea from Genazzano. The first time she writes to Father (Edward) Mullen, (O.S.A.). Edes will send him an extract from Hudson's letter. Edes thinks there will be little difficulty in obtaining a relic of St. Robert. She has hope of securing a zucchetto of the Pope for the Museum. Cardinal (Louis) Jacobini made Edes write a long letter explaining the matter. Cardinal (Giovanni) Simeoni made a fuss, but Edes told him she meant to have it. So he took off his head the one he was wearing. Cardinal Jacobini promised one of his as the Secretary of Propaganda should figure with the Pope in the Museum of the American Hierarchy. Edes hopes that if the Pope does give one it will not be soiled as he (Leo XIII) is not over clean personally. If Hudson will value them Edes will give to the Museum two zucchettos of Cardinal (Alexander) Barnabo. She will also give some relics of Pius IX.

All goes well with Sally (Sarah Redwood Parish Seton); Robert is to keep the secret W(illiam) imparted. They visited the Sacré Coeur which looked the same as it did thirty years ago. Madame Seghers received them and said W(illiam) looked like his father. She remembers the girls quite well. Robert is to tell Liz that Madame Davidoff, Emily's great friend, is dead. They are now James Parrish's guests. Berrian he sees daily; he goes to America next month. In 10 days, they return to London. Brother (Henry) Foley, (S.J.) gave them letters to Stonyhurst. At Buxton they will call on Tom's family. 1886 June 27,
McMaster, (James Alphonsus):
New York, (New York)
to (John Alphonsus McMaster):
(Bowling Green, Kentucky)
Because McMaster is old and hurried, he did not write to John at Memphis, (Tennessee). He urges John to see all he wants to see and not to hurry, for summer is a dull time in New York unless John has some plan for spending the months until September. He hopes that, even while travelling, John will keep up the love of God and His Blessed Mother, and that daily he reads a little from some book of devotion. John should not (be offended) at his reminding him of this, for he himself is glad when anyone brings these things to him. Either of them may die any day, and the grand thing is that they may meet, a united family (in Heaven). He again urges John to take his time travelling, and looks forward to the end of the journey, when he can help prepare John for the serious work God has appointed for him. John should not forget to say his beads; if he omits them one day he should say them twice the next. This should be a rule for his whole life. He encloses a letter to John that he opened by mistake. Sister Teresa (McMaster, D.C.) is suffering much; Sister St. John (McMaster, S.R.C.J.) is better.

Sharon Hill, P(ennsylvani)a
to (James Alphonsus McMaster):
(New York, New York)
The Mother Superior said she would tell Mc Master that (Sister) Saint John would write every week, so she would like his letters to be written. She wants him to bring her some leads, since writing with pencil is so much easier on her back than with pen. She asks him to tell Gertrude she will begin a letter to her one day this week.

to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.:
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
An article in the Ave Maria announcing that the Tabernacle Society of Philadelphia was collecting for the Sacerdotal Jubilee of Pope (Leo XIII), is in Whelan's opinion an error. The Tabernacle Society of Washington sent an Annual Report containing a circular on the subject and requested a notice. Enclosed is a duplicate circular. If the Philadelphia group is working for the same cause may not the circular issued by Whelan's group be noticed in the Ave Maria.

Brondel, John Baptist, B(ishop) of Helena:
Helena, Montana
to J(ames) A(lphonsus) McMaster:
(New York, New York)
Brondel encloses $5. to renew his subscription. He asks McMaster to tell F(ather) McCullough and Mr. Keiley and his family that he loves to think of the pleasant time he passed with them in Brooklyn, and that their aid contributed greatly to the success of the Cheyenne Mission. Last week Father Camillus Imoda, S.J., whom he had left in charge of Helena, died in bed, of rheumatism which struck the heart. He was born in Turin in 1829, came to Montana in 1859, and may be called the apostle of the Blackfeet, since he lived with them or for them during his stay in Montana. Father Imoda was an excellent business man, a good theologian, and a holy priest. On June 17, at 10:30 he spoke his confession to Father (Cyril) Pauvelyn, in the morning he was found dead. Bishop Brondel and Father Pauvelyn, who was on his way to the Gregory mines, were reached by telegrams in Butte and called back, there being no priest in Helena. Brondel says it is hard to have few priests and then lose them by sudden death. He asks McMaster to pray for him.
