to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Toohey does not know what story from the German Year-book Hudson is referring to unless it is the account of the Iroquois Martyrs. When he read it, he took for granted that John Gilmary Shea or another American Catholic historian wrote the article and then translated it into German. What does Hudson think of Father Peter (Lauth's) proposal? Toohey took up a collection for the Charleston sufferers which amounted to $36. When he goes to Austin he is going to attempt to borrow $400 from Lauth, so that he can fix the rectory in time for the Provincial's visit (Father William Corby).

to Rich(ar)d H(enry) Clarke: (New York, New York)

Gilmour sends Clarke the letter of Cardinal (John) Simeoni stating that the charge against Bishop (Louis Amadeus) Rappe was falsely made. Gilmour considers that this letter shows conclusively that Rome in time found it had done Rappe wrong and by the after-offer of titular "Archbishop" sought to set the wrong right as far as could be done. Clarke will of course guard sacredly secret the facts showing Father (T.P.) Thorpe's charges to be basely false, except the partial connection with the first "national" attack made against Rappe, he soon abandoning the party when he saw where they were going. Gilmour sends Bishop (John) Hughes' cross that he had spoken to Clarke about for the Philadelphia Catholic Historical Society. He also sends the "authentic". He will see what he can do for Clarke.

(McMaster), S.H.C.J., (Sister) S(ain)t John: Sharon Hill, P(ennsylvani)a
to (James Alphonsus McMaster): (New York, New York)

(Sister) S(ain)t John regrets that McMaster has been in bed two weeks, and she did not know of it, for if she had known, she would have prayed for him more earnestly, and would not have worried. She supposes it was his consideration for her that kept him from telling her. She feels for him with all her heart, for she knows it is harder for men to suffer physically than for women. His days must be long, but if they bring him nearer God, they are worthwhile. She is glad he has Pho with him. The pain, she tells him, will soon be over, but the recompense never.

FitzPatrick, Father Barth(lome)w: Cappoquin, (Ireland)
to (Richard Henry) Clarke: (New York, New York)

FitzPatrick writes in strict confidence and sends a meagre memorandum (enclosed). He knew nothing of Bishop (James Michael) O'Gorman's early life. O'Gorman was an excellent monk at Melleray (Ireland) as well as New Mellaray, a man of solid virtue and tender piety. Abbot Vincent Ryan, the Founder of Mount Melleray, appointed him procurator of Mount Mellaray, proof that the abbot considered him a businessman. Fitzpatrick knows nothing O'Gorman's episcopal life. Memorandum: Dates for O'Gorman's birth, reception, profession, and ordination. O'Gorman left for New Melleray, (Iowa) on May 8, 1849; was Superior there from May 1857 to his consecration on 8th 1859. (McMaster), D.C., (Sister) Gertrude: (Baltimore, Maryland)
to (James Alphonsus McMaster): (New York, New York)

All the (Sister) missed McMaster very much and since he could not be with them, the Mother Sub-Prioress burned a candle for him all day before the altar of the Blessed Lady. Everything went along nicely (October 15). She is sure that he would have enjoyed the sermon by (Father) P. J.) Donahue from St. John's Church, who will fill (Fathe)r Curtis' place at the Cathedral. She urges McMaster to get Mrs. Keiley's copy the Baltimore Sun for (October) 16 if he has not procured one. She gives details of the Mass and services, which was attended by F(athe)r (Augustus) Stuhl, C.SS.R., who afterwards spoke lovingly of McMaster. She is glad no one came inside the enclosure except the Cardinal (James Gibbons). She thinks he is getting to know them better. She inquires after McMaster's health, reminding him that the days are short, and Heaven is near. They all enjoyed Mrs. Keiley's letter. She is glad Mrs. Keiley is such a good friend, and she is glad of Pho's kindness. Mrs. Keiley's letter reports Dr. Byrne as describing McMaster's bruises as being black as her dress. S(iste)r S(ain)t John wrote S(iste)r Teresa that Miss Eliza Allen Starr enjoyed her visit to Sharon. She wonders whether McMaster enjoyed meeting Miss Starr as much as she enjoyed meeting him.

Duncan, S.J., Father W(illia)m: Boston, (Massachusetts)
to R(ichard) H(enry) Clarke: (New York, New York)

Duncan was an intimate friend of Bishop (Anthony Dominic Ambrose) Pellicer before he became a Bishop. But he saw him only once or twice after that and has only two letters of Pellicer. Father (C.T.) O'Callaghan, of Mobile will give the record of Pellicer's ordination, birth and consecration from the Cathedral records. O'Callaghan could also give details of his life in Mobile and as a priest in Montgomery, (Alabama). Duncan gives a sketch of Pellicer's life in Montgomery and his building and debts and travels in Mexico and Cuba to raise money for his parish. Owing to the declining health of the vicar-general, Father (James) McGarahan, Pellicer was placed in charge of the finances of the Diocese of Mobile, (Alabama) by Bishop (John) Quinlan. The excellent financial condition of the diocese when he left it, attests to how well Pellicer attended to his duties. He was appointed Vicar General (1867) and served in that capacity until made Bishop of San Antonio. Pellicer had an innocent kind of nature that drew people to him and allowed him to make friends easily.

Vermont, Ed(mund) de V.: Tivoli-on-the-Hudson, N(ew) Y(ork)
to Monsignor Robert Seton: Jersey City, (N)ew (J)ersey

He found Seton's 2 letters of the 15th when he returned yesterday. Seton's name is fully known to him as one of the very best in the country and its place in "America Heraldica" is assured as soon as he receives the following information. (He lists) what he wants for each of his notices. Millionaires as such have no place in his work, and the absence of the Astors, Vanderbilts, Goulds, Lorillards, etc. is sufficient proof of it. He works on proof found real, and if a few families have had no complete pedigree to furnish they at least for 150 years, and before the Cole, Hurd, and Johnston forged book plates came in use, have borne coat armor without being challenged. Every such doubtful print is shown in the book itself and no one is deceived. The first 192 names are in no way the best, but they are the first concerning which sufficient evidence reached him. He has 1000 c(oats) of a(rms) ready.

Dorsey, A(nna) H(anson): (Washington, District of Columbia)
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Dorsey is feeling better. She thanks Hudson is not having taken chunks out of the "Mad Penitent". "Adrift" was ruined by the chunks that were hewn out of it. During its publication Dorsey received letters from Notre Dame which hurt her keenly. She thinks Ar(ch)b(isho)p (James) Gibbons must have been reading the Ave Maria at the time for he visited Dorsey and said he hoped she retained command of her faculties. If a uniform edition becomes an accomplished fact the two Irish stories published by Lippincott must be included. She thinks that those who gave (Patrick) O'Shea leave to publish "The Flamingo" should get it out of his hands. Yesterday Dorsey received a letter from B(isho)p (John Joseph) Keane and one from Archbishop Gibbons which she sends to Hudson and to Father General Edward F. Sorin, C.S.C. She does not think Sorin has a very high opinion of her and such letters as these might give him a better one. Nellie (Ella Loraine) Dorsey has just returned from Annapolis and she has been summoned to appear before the Maritime Court at Halifax where Capt(ain ) Thompson is to be tried for the wreck of the "Hanerovian" on which Nellie was a passenger. Dorsey criticizes Maurice Francis Egan's work. Egan could do better if he could take a little more time.

Wimmer, (O.S.B.), Abbot Bonif(ace):
St. Vincent Abbey Beauty P(ost) O(ffice), P(ennsylvani)a
to Monsignor Rob(ert) Seton: (Jersey City, New Jersey)

He received Seton's favor of October 16 but did not see the lady introduced by it, Mrs. Livingstone. She had got a ticket for Pittsburgh and the conductor failed to let her off at Latrobe and she was taken to Greensburg, where she was left to wait for the mail train. Father Hilary (Pfraengle, O.S.B.) sent the carriage and picked her up about 11:00 A.M. The president tried to entertain her until 12 o'clock, dinner time for the students, when he excused himself. Mrs. Livingstone went through the college corridors which are just now a little out of order because the whole house is being provided with steam heating. She seems to have found fault with these things and was not pleased at all. The cook thought the laborers were finished eating so that Mrs. Livingstone could dine with her son. She ate a little, but did not like the coffee and jumped up from the table and left the refectory saying she would not let her son stay in a house where such meals were served. The president tried to appease her, but all to no purpose. The president was glad to get rid of him seeing that he would be very troublesome. Their college is in good order as regards buildings, fare, and teaching; there are about 170 pensioners and about 100 poor students. Wimmer is sorry if Seton gets some blame for having recommended it to Mrs. Livingstone. (Seton adds a note that he) wrote Wimmer that he "took no stock in the complaints." 1890.

Wolff, George S.: Norristown, P(ennsylvani)a
to (James Alphonsus) McMaster: (New York, New York)

Wolff writes that one of his chief purposes in recently visiting New York was to call on Mc Master, but he learned to his great regret that McMaster was painfully ill, and (Maurice Francis Egan's) message reached Wolff after his departure. He still cherishes the desire to meet and talk to McMaster, However, and hopes his illness will soon abate. His memory goes back eighteen or twenty years, and remembers the interest with which he read McMaster's articles before joining the Catholic Church. He believes these articles to be not only of great moment at the time they were published, but of permanent value, and urges McMaster to publish them, either recast or in their original form. He pepeats his hope that McMaster's health will improve.

Gautrelet, S.J., Father F.: New Orleans, (Louisiana)
to R(ichard) H(enry) Clarke: (New York, New York)

Gautrelet acknowledges Clarke's of Oct. 14 but is not able to answer all the questions. He found Bishop (Anthony D.) Pellicer in Spring Hill College in January 1857, where he studied two years at least. Pellicer spent 8 months in a seminary of the Diocese of Newark and in the same year returned to Spring Hill to study philosophy and moral theology. He was remarkable for his intellect and gentlemanly deportment. He was popular with the priests and students. The Bishop of Mobile appointed him parish priest at Montgomery, Ala(bama) where he built a fine church with the help of the congregation and also by money collected in Mexico and Havana. Afterwards he was appointed vicar general of Bishop (John) Quinlan in which capacity he served until his consecration. He then left for San Antonio, and Gautrelet has no information on his life there.

Garesche complains that he has constantly sent McMaster articles and excerpts from newspapers, but he has received no notice whatsoever. He has before him the (Freeman) of (Oct.) 3, containing the story of the golden wedding of Basil J. Elder. Garesche had thought that, since McMasis a friend of Alf Elder, he would take a personal interest in the matter, so he was surprised to find the story in the (Freeman) of (Oct.) 3, copied from the Catholic Standard, a compendium of an article sent to both papers (by Garesche) and copied from a story in the (St. Louis) Republican. Garesche wishes he could give McMaster the details of a miracle performed through prayers to Mother Ignatius. P.S. Regards. (Marginal Note): Garesche wonders if McMaster's editor may not be to blame, editing such letters as Garasche sends as anonymous.
