(Amoretti, Eugene):
Montrose, Colorado
to (his son at Notre Dame) (Eugene Amoretti Jr.):
He is sorry to hear that he has been sick. The Road he spoke of being at work on was finished in twelve days; there was not much money in it for him. He is proud to see his son's name on the Roll of Honor. He is anxious for him to be a good draftsman. He has a couple of Indian relics which he will send to the Historical Department of (Notre Dame). They are vessels made of reeds closely woven for carrying water. This section of the country was occupied many years ago by the Navajoes. (Note: Found among James F. Edwards' papers.)

(McQuaid), Bishop B(ernard Joseph):
Rochester, N(ew) Y(ork)
to Archbishop (Michael Augustine Corrigan:
New York, New York)
(McQuaid) received a letter from (Ella B.) E(des). There is nothing special in it except what the Secretary and Msgr. Sbarretti told her in regard to the German question. Father (P.M.) Abbelen and his underhand workers will get very little satisfaction. The concession of separate parishes for respective languages will be granted as it already exists, through the action of the Bishops. E(des) also says the (Catholic) University affair will not be settled until (Cardinal James Gibbons) gets there. The papers up here are quiet about the Father (Edward) McGlynn affair. The excitement was manufactured for a purpose by the Fenian element. In Chicago Archbishop (Patrick A. Feehan) dined with (Michael) Davitt and Gibbons had an audience with him. In New York, Davitt faces ten thousand people and announces his land theories, as bad and worse than McGlynn. (Corrigan) did well to protest such a scandal. The disturbances at St. Stephen's seem ended. (McQuaid) had not heard of Ramsay Crook's sickness or death until he received (Corrigan)'s telegram. (McQuaid) will write today or tomorrow to Edes.

to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.:
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Cooney thanks Hudson for the copy of the Columbian and other papers. He discusses the case ofFather (Edward) McGlynn and thinks his case has brought the Church before the American people in a favourable light by showing its views on labour and ownership. By putting her ban on the principles McGlynn advocates, the Church establishes her claim to be the safeguard of civil society and the only prop strong enough to sustain law and order. Cooney has to get the testimony of Doctor Averdick, his regimental surgeon in applying for a Veteran's pension. He is collecting material for his book.

E(gan), M(aurice) F(rancis):
Brooklyn, (New York)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.:
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Egan telegraphed Father Walsh that he could not be at Notre Dame this semester. He has resigned both to (James) McMaster and to his administration. McMaster left no will and Egan found himself at McMaster's death in an impossible position. He was left to run and save the (New York) Freeman's (Journal) because the slightest intimation that Egan were going away would have driven away subscribers and advertisers. No money was left for hiring an assistant and it was hopeless to secure any one to fill his place. McCarthy would not do nor would (T. F.) Galwey or Reilly who is saner minded than the others and who has gone to the Catholic Universe. Father Thomas Walsh, C.S.C. and Hudson have astonished him by stating that they want Egan at Notre Dame. He should be there next session.

Notre Dame is quite a little town in itself and unless each package is addressed to a particular person or department, it may be lost for weeks. Edwards has secured a new subscriber for the series in the person of Professor J(oseph) A. Lyons. Edwards wishes it were possible for him to order one hundred thousand copies. Edwards will gladly copy the letters written by Archbishop (John) Carroll. He has, in all, ten. The two sermons he has are the same manuscripts as the sermons published in the "Life of Archbishop Carroll". He will also send Shea a description of the Archbishop which he got some years ago from an old servant who remembered him well. He can also send a photograph of Archbishop Carroll's chalice. Edwards is indeed grateful for the offer of India proofs of the engravings that appear in his initial(?) volume. He also thanks Shea for the three numbers of the directory he can send for their set. Edwards is anxious to obtain Shea's manuscript for their historical cabinet. If not too late, Edwards hopes to secure a few more subscribers for Shea's work. He regrets that (the University of Notre Dame) did not receive a circular announcing the fact that Shea intended to bring out this work as Notre Dame would certainly have been on the list of patrons. In the future, Shea should always place the University on his list. Edwards can send an autograph of Father (Louis) Deseille. They have in one of their cabinets his chalice and other relics. The manuscripts given him by Father (Joseph) Querat are some letters written by Bishop (John Mary) Odin. He has in his possession a letter signed by Bishop (William Louis) Dubourg as Bishop of St. Louis. All of his early letters he has are signed Bishop of Louisiana, one is signed Bishop of St. Louis, and the others are signed Bishop of New Orleans, and the last ones Bishop of Montauban. Did he ever hold the title of Bishop of St. Louis? If Shea can let him have a document written and signed by Bishop Penalvery Cardenas or Archbishop Leonard Neale, he will confer a very great favor. Any old letters by any of their prelates will be gratefully received for the Bishops' Memorial Hall. Edwards wishes that Shea could find time to pay Notre Dame a visit. Edwards sends Shea by mail a copy of the circular of Father (Edward) Sorin, (C.S.C.). The letters on page 260, etc. may be of interest to Shea.

Poultney, Walter de Curzon:
(Baltimore, Maryland)
to Monsignor (Robert) Seton:
(Jersey City Heights, New Jersey)
He should have answered Seton's letter before, but it was the gay season, and he was busy with his pleasures. He thanks Seton for the puff he gave their family with E(dmund) de V. Vermont, and he encloses the last letter received from hom. Poultney wrote Vermont that Richard Curzon was the first emigrant as he came to this country with his friend Mr. Burnley on a visit about 1746 or 1747 and married very soon after arrival Elizabeth (-Rebecca Beker) Becker. Later in life he returned to New York and after the death of his wife his son Richard having married (Elizabeth) Moale of Baltimore, he came here to live. He brought over with him a parchment genealogy written in 1711 and an immense quantity of silver plate still held by the family. Poultney was in Europe last summer and his friend Lord Frederic Hamilton treated him very handsomely. He stayed with Hamilton's brother-in-law, the Earl of Winterton; was at the Earl of Leconfield's Petworth Park, was entertained by another brother-in-law, the Duke of Buccleuch; and stayed at Glamis Castle with the Earl of Strathmore. Hamilton is now in Canada with his sister, the Marchioness of Lansdowne. Poultney expects him in about a week with his friend Hugo wemyss. Seton is to return Vermont's letter.

The second trial of her husband,(John B.) Mannix, is set for March 7th. His business is good and if the trial does not go against him and he is not disbarred they hope to be able to pay off some of their debts. She recently read that Charles Warren Stoddard was no longer at Notre Dame, the same articles referred to him as a word painter. Mannix does not like the story "Fairy Gold",because of its abrupt ending. She is waiting for Kathleen O'Meara's article on Monsignor de Segur. Because of Miss Mc Cabe'seasy going attitude the Advocate, which should have been out in January is still in the printer's hands. What does Hudson think of the Pope's attitude regarding the Septem note and what of Father Edward McGlynn? The publication of his letter in Henry George's paper is against him as is the letter itself. She was disillusioned at the action of Micheal Davitt at the last meeting before he sailed for Ireland. Mannix comments on the biography of Longfellow, which she has just finished reading. She submits a poem.

(Brownson, Orestes A. Jr.):
Rockdale, (Iowa)
to (Henry F. Brownson:
Detroit, Michigan)
Henry's kind letter was duly received. He sees that Henry is still hard at work to perpetuate the greatness of their father's (Orestes A. Brownson) name. His memory of home affairs is chiefly of his anti-Catholic days when he saw little of his father since he was constantly studying. Occasionaly however, he would send for Orestes to play chess, and from eight a.m. to twelve p.m. there was no respite. If Orestes has any chess reputation, their father laid the foundation. (Letter is incomplete.)

Cards have been sent to England, and there are about a hundred sisters in all houses in this country. She prefers the plain ones. She reminds John of the reward awaiting them in Heaven. P.S. She asks if John has sent cards to Eliza Allen starr. Sister St. John has not written her yet.

Emmittsburg, Md.
to (James F.) Edwards:
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
She asked Dr. (Father Charles P.) Grannan about the Almanacs, but no care has been taken of such things at the Mountain. There is no order or cataloging of the library. Affairs are in a bad way. Sympathizing with the rebels in the civil war and liquor have been the cause of all the anguish. Things will be better in the future under Father (Edward) Allen. She asks if she could get a sketch of St. Mary's Mount printed in the Ave Maria. Although she gets her board and room, she needs money for necessities.

Dorsey thanks Hudson for his efforts to locate the missing parts of her stories, "Adrift" and "Zoe's Daughter". Her friend (Patrick) Donahue was kind enough to resell the original copy of "Zoe's Daughter" for less than half he paid for it. It will make a good volume for the uniform edition of her works. If Father-General Sorin is agreeable, she will dedicate "Palms" to him. (Frank) Murphy, the publisher is enthusiastic about the uniform edition and has written to a Catholic publisher in London and one in Dublin to make arrangements for bringing out the edition there. Mr. O'Neil, a former librarian in London informed Dorsey that the stories she had written had been reproduced both in England and Ireland.

Sister St. John is afraid (William J.) Onahan and his daughter were not pleased with their visit (to the Carmelite Convent), for when they spoke of the death of (James Alphonsus McMaster), Sister St. John "froze up". She wonders if John has a Missal for the laity, and praises the English edition of the Missal as being better than the American. She had a letter from (Sister) Gert(rude McMaster D.C.). She sends regards to the Keileys.

Baltimore, (Maryland)
to (John Alphonsus McMaster):
(New York, New York)
The Mother (Superior) says that their letters are to continue during Lent, for John needs their love and sympathy now that he is more than ever alone. The Mother (Superior) was much touched by John's thoughtfulness about the palms. Their father used to send twenty-five beads, and John will be rewarded for his thoughtfulness if he can send them, and he will be rewarded for his good intention if he cannot. John is asked to tell Major (John D. Keiley) that they appreciated Mr. Anthony Keiley's tribute to their father. The Mother (Superior) asks John to send the Freeman whenever there is anything in it that would interest them. Sister Gertrude will wait until Easter to answer Mrs. Keiley's letter, unless there is a very important matter coming up. It would be nice if she could come up for Easter.

He has felt very keenly for many years the need of such reform and has had too many occasions to witness the physical, mental, and moral miseries of the system. But the reforms that may now be brought about will be in the restoration of the land and other natural bounties to the people; this will abolish the system itself.
