(McQuaid), Bishop B(ernard Joseph):
Rochester, N(ew) Y(ork)
to Archibishop (Micheal Augustine Corrigan :
New York, New York)
(McQuaid) read in the Sun Father (James T.) Curran's insolent interview. If (Corrigan) is to rule his diocese, he must have the necessary power to inflict discipline on recalcitrant priests. The newspaper say Father (Richard Lalor) Burtsell was suspended and removed from Epiphany. (If Corrigan) can crush this rebellion by the Father (Edward) McGlynn faction, he will have won a great battle. (Corrigan) must send newspapers to the Propaganda, Cardinals Gibbons, Howard, Masella, to Bishops Persico, Ireland, Keane, to Smith, and others he may think of. Burtsell and Curran will fight on another score than McGlynn. (Corrigan) should make good use of the doings at the meeting of St. Stephen's people last Friday. (McQuaid) sends a letter showing how McGlynn's revolt affects others at a distance and it should be destroyed after being read. (McQuaid) has just bought the site for (St. Bernard's) Seminary—24 acres on the Genesee and 2200 feet on the Boulevard. Price $10,000. Father (Edward) Hanna will return at the end of the scholastic year. (McQuaid) thinks they are over looking Hanna. Paul Fuller is at Clifton Springs, and is improving. to (James F. Edwards:

Looking over her papers she found the old letter written to her great-uncle which might be of value. Edwards' letter gave her additional pleasure for Easter. She has been busy hanging her old portraits in her room. She would like to will the portrait of the Archbishop's Mother to the Memorial Hall, Notre Dame, and the Lord Baltimore letter, but she does not know what to do on account of her married sister. It seems that Miss Barry's uncle had a fine oil painting of Archbishop (John) Carroll taken by Stuart, but it was sold many years ago. They had the full Marine band at St. Peter's on Easter Sunday.

Shea, John Gilmary:
Elizabeth, New Jersey
to J(ames) F. Edwards:
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
He thanks Edwards for the Brute contribution to the Magazine. Shea hopes to contribute to Memorial Hall, but anything of Bishops' Concanen, Conally, Egan and Penalver is very scarce. Archbishop Neale wrote little and his letters are brief and business-like. Shea is much indebted to Edwards for the offer of a photograph of Bishop (Luke) Concanen of New York. There are few originals of bishops in his hands. Shea's father's hostility to Bishop (John) Dubois and Bishop (John) Hughes made bishops shy of Shea when he was young. The Cincinnati attacks created a still more wide-spread prejudice against Shea.

The mission church he cares for at Pine Oaks is short of vestments, but the farmers there are able, if they chose to pay for the churches needs. Many German families in his parish do not attend church and will not send their children to catechism. At Manor about 50 Mexican families assemble the first Saturday of each month to hear Mass.

His Eminence put his foot in it badly. (McQuaid) cannot understand why the Herald champions his Eminence and is adverse to (Corrigan). (Corrigan)'s victory is about complete. (McQuaid) realizes the necessity of New York priests to clear themselves from the imputation of disloyalty. (McQuaid) wrote yesterday to (Ella B.) St. Laurent College, Montreal, Ca.
to James F. Edwards:
Notre Dame, Indiana
Carrier thinks Edwards is doing a noble work for his Alma Mater, and he deserves every encouragement from the members of Holy Cross. Carrier regrets that he cannot send the personal objects mentioned. They were lost in the gulf of Mexico in 1876. As to war memorials he sends a pair of brass candlesticks, cruets and a poor photograph of himself in uniform. The only mark of his position as chaplain was a silver cross on his left shoulder. He sends also his diplomas. The Licientiate of Science was awarded to him as a special favour. The chalice he used during the war was a small silver one that could be taken apart; he probably left it at Besancon or Leo or St. Vincent. He forwards for the N.D. Museum a collection of West Indies shells. Canada needs an Edwards to collect ecclesiastical relics. Notre Dame is rich and can afford to build a fire-proof building for the museum.

Drummond, S.J., Father Lewis:
St. Boniface, Man(itoba)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.) :
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Hudson objected to Drummond's speaking of (Francis) Parkman's style as "second rate poetical prose". An article in the London Tablet of March 26th criticizing "A Troubled Heart" may help Hudson to understand Drummond's point of view. The words he used in a lecture on the French element were "his second rate poetical prose seems to have damaged him in England". Now a high-toned English paper passes a severer judgement on a work which is admired on this side of the water. The difference between England and American critics appears in both (Charles Warren) Stoddard, and Parkman. During the time Drummond spent in England among unprejudiced men of culture, he never heard Parkman's name mentioned as a first class writer. Drummond thought it might soften the blow which the Tablet reviewer inflicted on Hudson, who knows the sincerity of Stoddard. The Catholic newspaper, the Northwest Review has passed into the hands of an able convert from Anglicanism, N.D. Beck.

Hennessy, Father P(atrick):
Jersey City, (New Jersey)
to (Henry F.) Brownson:
(Detroit, Michigan)
Father (W.) Lockhart in his Life of Rosmini asserts in a note that Dr. (Orestes A.) Brownson towards the end of his life rejected the Philosophy of Gioberti and turned to that of Rosmini. Hennessy informed Father Lockhart of his error, but the latter replied that Dr. (William) Channing, son of the distinguished (William) Ellery Channing, had been told to study Rosmini, who, he said, had the true philosophy. Hennessy wrote again to Father Lockhart, quoting some of Dr. Brownson's refutations of Rosmini, and his reply was to ask to hear from someone who knew Dr. Brownson up to his last years and who would know whether he ever changed his attitude towards Rosmini. Therefore Brownson is asked to send Hennessy a few lines on the subject, which may be sent to Father Lookhart to be used in his next edition to correct his error. Hennessy is anxiously awaiting volume 20 of Brownson's Works, and asks when Brownson will begin to write his father's life.

Father (Joseph) Damien (De Veuster) requests that Hudson send some seeds and plants to him which are to be used to landscape the settlement. Since it is located on the north side of the island the salt spray and trade winds render growth of vegetation precarious, so this will be an experiment. The florists are at liberty to suggest whatever they think will grow. Dutton suggests a list of what they desire, which may be procured from John Lewis Childs, a florist in Queens, New York. Kindest regards to Father D. E. Hudson is signed by Father Damien.

The trial of (John B.) Mannix, her husband, has ended favorably because of a disagreement among the jury. Because of this ordeal she has been unable to write for the Ave Maria. She was unaware until she read Eliza Allen Starr's article on Mother Angela (Gillespie) that she was instrumental in forming the Ave Maria. Mannix did not think Father (Neal) Gillespie had much force. She inquires if there is a chance that Father Damien might recover his health. "Fairy Gold" does not improve as it goes on. Miss (Rosa) Mulholland's article "The Fair Emigrant" in the Catholic World was nice. She did not like the Catholic World's article on Henry George because it handled him too politely. He is delighted with the Roman painting of Bishop Concanen. It is the one he wishes to engrave. Edwards succeeded wonderfully in reproducing the countenance of Bishop Egan. The disappearance of the Porro portrait is strange. Shea wants a portrait of Bishop Flaget. Lockhart, Father W.:
London, (England)
to H(enry F.) Brownson:
(Detroit, Michigan)
Father Lockhart encloses a letter of his own to Father (Isaac T.) Hecker, who has added a few lines on the back which will explain Father Lockhart's writing to Brownson.
Enclosure:1887 Apr. 8
Lockhart, Father W.:
London, (England)
to Father I(saac) T. Hecker:
(New York, New York)
Father Lockhart has stated in his Life of Rosmini that Dr. (Orestes A.) Brownson gave up the philosophy of Gioberti for that of Rosmini in the last years of his life, after giving up the Review. This was told Father Lockhart by Dr. (William H.) Channing, biographer of (William Ellery) Channing, the former having recommended Rosmini to his friend Brownson. The statement is now impugned and since Channing is now dead, Father Lockhart is anxious to learn the truth of the matter. There are reviews of his Life in the Catholic World and in the Tablet, the latter by Bishop Herbert Vaughn of Salford. He hopes Father Hecker is feeling better and will feel well enough to reply.
The following is written on the back of this letter:1887 May 18
Hecker, Father I(saac) T.:
(New York, New York)
to (Father W. Lockhart):
(London, England)
Father Hecker is always glad to hear from one he loves as much as Father Lockhart, and advises him to write to Henry (F.) Brownson, cub of the "Old Bear" (Orestes A. Brownson), who will have the information.

(McMaster), D.C., (Sister) Gertrude:
Baltimore, (Maryland)
to (John Alphonsus McMaster):
(New York, New York)
She wishes him a happy birthday. She is glad that he will visit Sister St. John (McMaster, D.C.) who must give him the twenty-one "hugs" for them all. She cannot realize that twenty-one years have passed since John was born. Their long talks must wait until Heaven, but he is more dear to her than ever. She is glad he is spending (May 2, 1887) with Uncle Will. John should not clip articles from the Freeman, but just send the whole paper. If John finds a relic of St. Paul of the Cross among his father's papers he should send it. She asks him for Auntie Brown's address. A picture will be enclosed. Regards.

The past year has been a strange one for him, but he has trusted in God throughout, and she hopes his new year of life will be one of increased confidence in Him. She urges him to pray and meditate, and thinks when they meet he will thank her for doing so. She prays that his birthday may bring him peace and grace. If John sees Major (John D. Keiley) he should assure him of Sister Teresa's prayers for the soul of his deceased mother. She is sending gifts for John.
