McGovern,Father James J.:
Lockport, Ill(inois)
to Richard H(enry) Clarke :
(New York, New York)
McGovern is glad to hear that Clarke's health is better. It has been difficult to gather data and facts aboutBishop (Anthony) O'Regan. The Bishop, on being appointed to the see of Chicago, expressed regret at leaving his books and classes for a field of labor in which he was a stranger. He did good work and the diocese prospered. His only trouble was he took men for what they ought to be, not what they were. He was charitable in handling his priests despite charges to the contrary. The West of 30 years before was very crude and hard on priests who had to suffer greatly. Many broke down or strayed into devious paths. Father (Charles) Chiniquy was suspended by his Bishop in Canada before he came to Chicago where he was temporarily received until his papers arrived. He was assigned to the French district in Kankakee and Iroquois Counties, Ill(inois). Chiniquy soon showed up his iniquity and his faculties were withdrawn. In keeping with his past he went over to the enemy where he has stayed. He sued Bishop O'Regan for defamation of character, salary and over church property. The affair over property was not settled until Bishop (Thomas) Foley's time. Nearly all of Chiniquy's followers have come back to the Church, while he is living a miserable life. Bishop O'Regan went to Rome in 1856 to resign the cares of his office to the Holy See. In June 1857 his resignation was accepted. O'Regan built the episcopal residence destroyed in the Chicago fire, purchased Calvary cemetery and brought the Jesuits and Redemptionists to Chicago. Father (Arnold) Damen, S.J. was his choice. O'Regan was respected by the people of Chicago as a man of learning. Archbishops (Patrick) Ryan and (Patrick) Feehan were students in O'Regan's seminary. He wrote but, never published, several essays and was a Biblical scholar. O'Regan was a man of strong physical endurance. He believed religion could only flourish if there was a worthy priesthood. References to O'Regan's death in England can be found in Freeman's Journal and the London Tablet.

O'Meara, Kathleen:
Paris, (France)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.) :
Notre Dame, Indiana
O'Meara has returned from Rome. Pope Leo XIII looked like a dying man. She heard Mass in his oratory. It was wonderful to hear one's voice joining the Vicar of Christ's in the Salve Regina. In Rome everyone says it aloud with the priest. Do they at Notre Dame? In France the congregation mutters it. The Italian government has been doing its best to destroy old Rome. (James) Cardinal Gibbons won everyone's heart, Protestant as well as Catholic. Bishop (John) Ireland and Bishop John Keane are admired as representative prelates of the United States.

There is no mistake about "Elaine" at Toohey's end of the line; Hudson had the manuscript for months, but it now lies in his trunk. When Hudson mentioned in "Catholic Notes" Dr. Hettinger's article on Dante, why did Hudson not refer to the fact that the Ave Maria had published a translation of it?

Patterson, M( ) E.:
La Crosse, Wis(consin)
to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C. :
Notre Dame, Indiana
It is unaccountable by any natural explanation how Hudson's type became heterodox in printing the term that was opposed to Arianism. No mention was make of the other term, to occasion the confusion. Surely, it was not Doctor (Hettinger) that slipped. In place of the article from the Liverpool Catholic Times, Hudson might have reproduced a more comprehensive paragraph of similar import that has been making the rounds of the American press.

Foley encloses a money order of $3.00, payment of subscription of a subscription to the Freeman for a year. He regrets the death of (James A.) McMaster, who in his opinion did more to advanced Catholic truth and demolish Protestant error than any other American. Catholics in the United States owe him a debt of gratitude they can never repay. (Orestes A) Brownson was McMaster's equal, but not his superior. He regrets daily the loss of McMaster, but the mantle has fallen on worthy shoulders, and Keiley could do Foley a service by assuring the present editor that the Catholics on the Pacific coast are highly pleased and wish him Godspeed. Catholics of the United States love and admire his facile pen.

Since Shea has given much time, money and work to the cause, he feels that he can appeal to others.

Schultheis read the notice of Father E. S. Bowden's translation of Dr. Franz Hettinger's book on Dante's "Divina Commedia" in which (Henry) Cardinal Manning is mentioned as stating that with the exception of Ozanam, no Catholic of modern time has published a translation of Dante's works. He believes Manning is mistaken because the late King John of Saxony, a Catholic, under the nom de plume of "Philalethus" published a German version of the entire "Divina Commedia". The praise the Ave Maria bestows on Bowden's book is really due to the German theologian whose work Bowden presented in a masterly English edition.
