In Indiana some French priests thought that the feast days were those of the Concordat with Bonaparte and the custom grew up out west of recognizing those feasts.Shea is glad that his Review articles have pleased somebody. Mrs. Shea and his daughter thank Elliott for his kind words. She is not well and the youngest daughter suffers from neuralgia.

P.S. He has written letters on Indian pictographs, silver crosses, parochial registers, etc. trying to keep up with the postman. (The Elliott book plate is attached.)

S(toddard) C(harles) W(arren): Covington, K(entuck)y
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C. ) : (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Father (Joseph) Sasia's letter breathes the true spirit of Christian modesty. Rene (Papin) is a gem; Stoddard wonders if he keeps a journal. Perhaps "Cuori" will suggest this. He will be glad to have the San Carlo for it is a singularly interesting picture. He liked (Ad) Hardenburgh and wishes he would send Stoddard his photograph. He asks to be remembered to Brothers Polycarp (James White); Columbkille (Thomas Carmody); John Joseph (Peter Coyne); Casimir (Ladislaus Lewandowski); Professors Hoynes, Stace and Gregori. If the money for Father (Joseph) Damien (De Veuster) is sent to the Catholic Bishop, no officer of the government can touch it. The government is very jealous of Damien's private fund and takes this means of sitting on his friends and admirers. Hudson can do what he likes with the sketches for he fears they will not come out in book form. Mother Angela (Gillespie) has departed and Stoddard is glad. She had much of the indivuality that goes into the making of a Ewing.

Mallet will do what he can for Clarke when he returns from his trip north.

(McMaster), D.C., (Sister) Gertrude: Baltimore, (Maryland)
to (John Alphonsus McMaster): (New York, New York)

John's letter was welcome, and though she has left him long without a word, she has thought of him always. She was very busy. It is a comfort to know that John turned out to be all his father expected. The Mother (Superior) will welcome him if he comes for a visit, but he should not come Monday or Tuesday of next week, when they will be occupied. The lamp and wicks arrived safely and it has been burning for him. It was kind of him to send a book to Sister Teresa (McMaster, D.C.), and the Mother (Superior) was greatly touched by this mark of affection. Sam Tuckerman was ill and went home quickly from Carmel. Regards to Mrs. (John D.) Keiley and family.

McGovern, Father James J.: (Lockport, Illinois)
to Richard H(enry) Clarke: (New York, New York)

The miseries of house cleaning caused Clarke's letter to be misplaced and a delay in answering his questions. McGovern did not find much more on Bishop (Anthony) O'Regan. He sends some matter about Bishop (Thomas) Foley. McGovern quotes from O'Regan's letter of February 23, 1855 to John McMullen, College of Propaganda, later Bishop of Davenport. O'Regan begged McMullen to persevere as they needed as many priests as possible in Chicago. At the time O'Regan said he needed 20 priests. O'Regan's commentaries on the Epistle to the Romans shows deep research and a thorough knowledge. He was an earnest man but had no savoir faire or knowledge of men. He was very close in money matters.

MacDonnell,Sister M(ary) Magdalene: (Lisbon, Portugal)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Sister thanks Hudson for publishing her sketch on (Cajetan) Cardinal (Masella). Hudson's sketch of Sister M(ary) Angela (Gillespie) aroused MacDonnell's interest. She is glad to hear Mrs. (Anna Hanson) Dorsey is re-publishing her works. Has Hudson read the work on the visions of Catherine Emmerick. Reading Clement Brentano's life she was astonished when she learned that he had spent six years beside Emmerick's sick bed writing down her vision. The article in Harper's Magazine on the birth of our lord was beautiful, notwithstanding the unconscious blasphemy in it. From the critique published by the Ave Maria of this article she learned it was written by Lew Wallace author of "Ben Hur".

Stoddard thanks Hudson for the copy of "Girontius". He returns the Pittsburgh newspaper. The Chicago notice of "Cuori" is admirable. It is one of the few books of a generation that is inspiring and refreshing. Stoddard doubts if Hudson will find the "Cloister Life of Emperor Charles V" in his catalogues because it was issued by an Edinburgh house. Since his mother's death his interest in life has gone. He encloses a clipping from the (Honolulu) Commercial-Advertiser commenting unfavorably on the subscription of funds in England to aid Father (Joseph) Damien (De Veuster) in his work among the lepers.

M(annix) M(ary) E.: Cin(cinnati), O(hio)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Mannix inquires if Angelique De Lande is a real name or a nom de plume; whether Octavia Hensel lives in this country and if William D. Kelly is a priest. The article on the conversion of Leo Taxil made interesting reading. She cannot understanding why there is any prejudice against the Ave Maria since few Catholics take two magazines and since they have a choice between the Ave Maria and the Catholic World, most would prefer the Ave Maria. Mannix has heard from Miss (Mary) Meline, who is writing her book at Mount St. Mary's that a Mrs.Martin has undertaken the sub-editorship of the Catholic World. If Meline's letter reflects the sentiments of the college there is strong feeling there against Archbishop (Michael) Corrigan for his action against Father Edward McGlynn. Whatever Corrigan and McGlynn's private animosities may be, the fact that McGlynn could seek the political platform and identify himself with H.N. B. of odious memory and Harold Crosby shows something is wrong. John Acton is obscure and not too versatile, and while he has true poetic instinct, she cannot make any thing of the enclosed verses of his. After reading the first chapter of "Two Tramps" she cannot bear to read any more.
