Dorsey, E(lla) L(orraine):
(Washington, District of Columbia)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Dorsey acknowledges the check Hudson sent in payment for her children's stories. She has returned to writing an article entitled "Little Phil" on the life of General Philip Sheridan. Sheridan has been subjected to persecutive snubbing because he practices his Catholic faith, not by President (Grover Cleveland) but by the Secretary of War (an old fashioned Cotton Mather New England intolerant Arian), who is under the thumb of the Adjutant-General, who is as blue a Presbyterian as can be found and who believes that to have a Roman Catholic commander-in-chief of the Army is dangerous to Republican liberties and principles. Dorsey is grateful for Hudson's enthusiasm about the edition.

1887 July 3,
(McMaster, D.C.), (Sister) Gertrude:
Baltimore, (Maryland)
to (John Alphonsus McMaster):
(New York, New York)
They are wondering when they will see John. Probably it was inconvenient last week; he must suit himself about the time, but they will always be glad to see him. This week it will probably be very warm, so his visit would be unpleasant, and he had better ask Sister St. John (McMaster, S.H.C.J.) when she will be in retreat. Tuesday will be the anniversary of the death of their mother, whom John hardly remembers, but who was so good to them. She hopes John is going to bed early and keeping well. She sends her love to Mrs. (John D.) Keiley and her family. Mother (Beatrix of the Holy Spirit, D.C.) is stronger, and (Sister Teresa McMaster, D.C.) is better than she was all last year. It is a comfort to know that John is trying to be what his father wished. They all send their love.

Toohey, C.S.C., Father J(ohn) M. Taylor,:
Texas
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.:
Notre Dame, Indiana
Toohey thanks Hudson for the copy of "Once Upon A Time". He received a telegram from Father Peter (Lauth, C.S.C.) asking Toohey to meet him at the noon train. Lauth is going north, he supposes to Notre Dame. He wrote Father (Edward) Sorin, C.S.C. declining his confidential offer. Toohey would have been content to go on the missions last year, but Sorin was in his usual hurry to rush Toohey off for fear that Father (William) Corby, C.S.C. would break up his arrangement. If he goes back to Notre Dame, Toohey must devise some conspiracy against Our Grand Old Man. Today, his Bohemian parishioners at Taylor are celebrating the feast of the two Apostles of the Slavs. The Mexican congregation at Manor is the largest one he has, while most of the families around the missions are, to use Father Lilly's epithets, pukes. Next Monday, Toohey starts a revival at St. Edwards.

Welch has been teaching philosophy at Georgetown College during the past school year. After he finishes giving a retreat at the Franciscan House in Loretto, he will go to Worcester, Massachusetts. Father (Robert) Fulton, S.J. has been sent as a visitor to Ireland. Did Hudson know Annie Carey a relative of Miss Emma? Years ago she entered the Sacred Heart Convent, but Welch hears she left recently after being dispensed by Rome. James Dwight, younger brother of Doctor Thomas (Dwight) married Lizzie Iasigi. The last fair at St. Mary's, Boston brought in $45,000; but $25,000 of the debt remains on their new school. Mr. Tully, partner of Andrew Maher in an importing business, died a few months ago. The business is carried on by Maher and Edward Kinney, a nephew of Tully's. Tully left $90,000 to various institutions, $5,000 of it to Holy Cross College. Has Hudson heard the lecture by Father Higgins, S.J., exposing the errors of Henry George?

Seton, Father Robert:
Jersey City, N(ew) J(ersey)
to Richard H(enry) Clarke:
(New York, New York)
In answer to Clarke's letter Seton can give little information on (Bishop James R.) Bayley. Seton's Aunt Catharine of the Convent of Mercy might know something and Father (George H.) Doane might know more. Seton had little communication or correspondence with Bayley. He was never given the least scrap as a memorial of their relationship. The Bishop was a grandson of old Dr. Richard Bayley of the Bayleys of Hoddesdon, county of Hertford, England, 1634, by his second wife and was thus a nephew of Mother Seton by the half-blood.

She asks Seton to accept her apologies for the carelessly written card she sent him last winter. She recalls a lecture Seton once gave them on letter writing. Were it possible, her gold medal received in '71 would blush at the scrawls she sends to friends. She asks Seton to pray for her and beg God to bless her happy home with a child. Last Saturday she went to Madison with her husband. She found the old convent much more to her taste than the new house. Schreiber, Father F.:
Havana, Mason County, Illinois
to Richard H(enry) Clarke:
(New York, New York)
Father (Henry) Muhlsiepen has requested him to answer Clarke's letter, because he has lately been to Saint Louis seeking the same information for the German-American magazine of Cincinnati. As an old worshipper of Bishop (Joseph) Melcher he tried to find out whatever he could but he sent the information to H.A. Ratterman of Cincinnati who is going to publish the biography of Melcher in his magazine. He has no copy of the information which he received from Ven. Mother Johanna of the Ursulines of Saint Louis, Bishop (Frederick X.) Katzer of Green Bay, and Father (Joseph) Nussbaum of Laporte, Indiana. Muhlsiepen gave him some notes gathered by Father (H.) Van Der Sanden. As he remembers the dates, he sets them down beginning with the birth of Melcher in Vienna, his removal to Modena, to his ordination at the age of 23 on April 3, 1843 in Paris. He was received into the diocese of Saint Louis by Bishop (Joseph) Rosati. From 1847-68 he was Vicar General of the Diocese. He was named Bishop-elect of Quincy but did not accept, in 1853. In 1868, he was consecrated first bishop of Green Bay. He recounts the stories told him by Muhlsiepen about Melcher, of his reception into the Saint Louis diocese, and his missionary work. He relates his dealings with the Ursulines and of bringing them to Illinois and Missouri. Archbishop (Peter Richard) Kenrick left all German affairs to Melcher, making him almost a German bishop. He quotes Nussbaum about his character, as he knew him in Green Bay, expecially about his interest in his priests. (Covering envelope has name of Henriette Bauer, New York.)

Because of the limited sale of Catholic books she would charge $250 for the first and $400 for the second story. She regrets not writing sooner to cheer up John during the hot weather. God sent the hot weather, however, and it will soon pass away. Aug. 3. Yesterday was John's feast day, and the anniversary of his First Communion. John desired to die eleven years ago, but has been preserved through many perils. The Mother (Superior) is better again, and was pleased with John's affectionate concern. She hopes John enjoyed himself on Sunday, and urges him to take care of himself, and have confidence in God. P.S. Sister Teresa (McMaster, D.C.) thanks John for sending her picture to a friend.
