St. Inigos, (Maryland)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Notre Dame has shown enterprise and may get to be the University of the United States. Its title, central position and temporal advantages give it the right of a candidate for that honor. Neale is disgusted over not getting subscribers for the Ave Maria, but Hudson is suffering from sins of old humdrun straight-laced, watery Catholic writers. Catholics do not know the increased literary merit of Catholic journals.Christian Reid andE(lla) L(orraine) D(orsey) are great benefactors to the cause of Catholic reading. Hudson mentioned in the August 14th issue of the Ave Maria that a Catholic weekly news publication was to be started but did not state where. Neale received a circular from the American Catholic announcing an eight page weekly for a dollar a year.

Richards, H(enry) L.:
Winchester, (Massachusetts)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Their friend (Patrick V.) Hickey is a good man, thououghly Catholic but Richards cannot always give him credit for the best judgement as an editor. It seems to Richards that Hickey has too many irons in the fire and is too distracted by want of sufficient means to make his complicated machinery move smoothly. Richards thinks the trouble Hudson alludes to might be improved. Hudson no doubt observed his shorter notice of "Once Upon A Time" in the last (Catholic) Review and will give him credit for it. He has received the copy of "Tales For Eventide". Christian Reid's "Fairy Gold", Richards considers one of her very best. Kathleen O'Meara's biographical sketch of Bishop de Segur is one of her best articles. He wishes the clergy would push a crusade against bad and in favor of good Catholic literature and encourage the establishing of libraries in every parish. The mischief that is done by debasing literature is impressed upon him by his work with the Charities Bureau of Boston.

Notre Dame, Ind(iana)
to (Richard Henry) Clarke:
(New York, New York)
Edwards sends a copy of Bishop (Patrick N.) Lynch's letter to Archbishop (James) Whitfield. Edwards found the letter in an envelope addressed to Whitfield in Louisville. Shea was correct when he said Bishop (John B.) David was the 2nd Bishop of Bardstown. He was consecrated coadjutor with right of succession. David became Bishop of Bardstown after Rome accepted Flaget's resignation. He was not satisfied with the arrangement so Bishop (Benedict J.) Flaget was reappointed. Copied Letter: "Lynch said he was probably the first to give Whitfield the painful news Flaget had offered his resignation to Rome and it was accepted. Bishop David was the Bishop of Kentucky and Father Chabrat was to become coadjutor. This created a great sensation in the public mind." (P.S.) Edwards wrote several times to Rome for a portrait of Bishop (Francisco) Porro y Reinado but none could be found and no one seems to know anything about him at the Convent of the Holy Apostles.

Shea, John Gilmary:
Elizabeth, New Jersey
to J(ames) F. Edwards:
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Unbounded thanks for the fine portrait of Bishop (Benedict) Flaget. He is sorry that Edwards took the trouble to copy the will of Archbishop Carroll as he might have obtained an official one. If Edwards sends what Miss (Emily C.) Brent let him have, Shea can extract all he needs. Shea trusts that Bishop Fenwick's Pastorini reached Edwards. He suggests that Edwards try to get the ivory crucifix of the Flemish sculptor Duquesnoy which Bishop (Francis) Drautbauer found among rubbish and also the crucifix which Father Chambige, nephew of Flaget, has — one that has been in the family for generations.

Shea, John Gilmary:
Elizabeth, N(ew) J(ersey)
to Monsignor Robert Seton:
(Jersey City Heights, New Jersey)
Shea is much indebted to Seton for his letter of the 7th. The day after its arrival, he met Bishop Wigger's secretary (Father Denis McCartie), but he had never heard of the silver chalice. Shea trusts the other relics have not disappeared. Bishop (Francis Xavier) Krautbauer found in dust and rubbish an ivory crucifix carved by Duquesnoy. Shea engraved it for him as he did some relics dug up at Green Bay. Shea hopes Seton will allow him to use his letter in the U(nited) S(tates) C(atholic) Historical Magazine. As Seton is a contributor to "Curio" he may prefer to put the information in form himself. They will be delighted to have Seton as a contributor.

From the printed articles enclosed in Edwards' letter she is convinced that the arguments with regard to the collection he is making are very good. If (John Gilmary) Shea is satisfied with copies, she is willing that Edwards should retain what she gave him. But she asks that the papers be returned if they are not necessary for his collection. She gave them only because she could not bear to disappoint Edwards so much. She thinks Edwards works too much for his health.

She sends a letter of Archbishop Francis Patrick Kenrick for the collection. Kenrick rated her literary efforts above their value. In her search she came across some letters of Father Adrien Rouquette which she sends. The only time she saw Rouquette was in the chapel of the Sulpician Seminary in Baltimore.Father Louis Regis Deluol, the Sulpician Superior, received her into the Church. Rouquette recently ordained accompanied the Bishop of New Orleans (Anthony Blanc) to the first Plenary Council at Baltimore as his theologian. Rouquette's countenance was singularly attractive, complexion swarthy, eyes black, abundant black silky hair. He looked far above commonplace mortals. No man has done more in providing splendid priests for the missions than Father Deluol.

McGovern, Father James J.:
Lockport, (Illinois)
to Richard H(enry) Clarke:
(New York, New York)
In answer to Clarke's he says that the college priests—progressive men—were never in harmony with the St. Louis appointments to the Chicago Diocesan See. Bishop (James O.) Van De Velde was a Belgian, and although a thorough English scholar, he should have never been appointed to the diocese which was Irish. He acknowledged the fact when he went to Rome with the decrees of the Council of Baltimore. Van De Velde wanted to resign but the Holy Father refused his resignation. The Bishop then laid aside his episcopal robes and insignia. The Holy Father ordered him to resume his bishop's dress and return to his diocese. The building of the Cathedral was a bone of contention between the bishop and the College priests. Living near the lake injured the Bishop's health and his physician ordered him south. McGovern dissented from the way Clarke published Van De Velde's life because he felt it was of no historical value to publish the grievances between bishops and priests as the cause of his departure from Chicago. Van De Velde was very free with his pen as is shown in the "Western Tablet" in McGovern's possession. McGovern loves the memory of Van De Velde and hopes to do his life before long along with the other bishops.

Has she ever told Hudson about her old relative in Philadelphia, who built a hospital,a home for the aged and a noviciate for Lutheran Nuns. Neale, S.J., Father (James) P(ye):

to Father Daniel (E. Hudson, C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
One thing which Hudson does that aggravates Neale is his failure to mention where the books and things mentioned in "Catholic Notes and Literary Supplement" can be found. How well Neale remembers Hudson as a pale amicable youth, welcoming Father Carroll and all of them when they dropped in to Pipers. During the past summer, while in Boston, Neale saw (Patrick) Donahoe the former great man and was pleased to see that he had not changed much in twenty years. Hudson stated in the notes recently that the Paulists had a copy of the Douay edition of the Old and New Testament which was published in 1582. Woodstock has three complete sets and if Hudson desires, Neale will write to Father Charles Piccirillo, S.J. and ask him to send an account of them. The Catholic World of October 1870 has an account of the first English version. Father J(ohn) B. Gaffney has started the first Catholic colored school in St. Mary's County, Maryland. Neale has started a school for white children at St. Inigo's. He has the finest set of colored people in the United States. Properly trained, they are not at all inferior in morality to white people.
