Howley, Father R(ichard):
Bodmin, (Cornwall, England)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Howley submits some verses. A letter from St. John's states that the Bishop is going to Rome. When Howley was at Rome, the Propaganda informed him that it would facilitate a settlement of his affairs if he would meet the bishop in Rome and before the bishop, put in his claims. He plans to make the journey even though they can not get on without him at Bodmin. Howley asks Hudson to send him a copy of Evangeline together with the poems of Longfellow. He has made connections with the Month and Dublin Review, but he is never as pleased and inspired as when he writes for the Ave Maria.

to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Howley sends some verses and asks Hudson to note his review of Father (Bernard) O'Reilly's "Life of Leo XIII" in the October Dublin Review. The editor wrote to Father Higgins that O'Reilly had honors showered on him and he will be angry at the less flattering review. The writer, the editor supposes, could defend his view, and the editor does not wish to see it changed since he thinks it a fair criticism. Father (John A.) Zahm, C.S.C. will be pleased with Higgin's compliment in his review of Father (Martin) Brennan's "What Catholics Have Done (For Science)".

Benedict, Father M. Abbot:
Gethsemani, Kentucky
to (James F. Edwards:
Notre Dame, Indiana)
He regrets that he was obliged to send to Rome the letters of Bishop (Peter Joseph) Lavialle (of Louisville, Kentucky). They published a long notice in France about him when he died. Bishop (Camillus) Maes who promised to write the life of Lavialle has the notice. The Sisters of the Good Shepherd whose Director he was can tell something about Lavialle. Father O'Leary spoke to Benedict of Lavialle's admirable conduct during the cholera, a short time after his coming from France under Bishop Flaget.

(McQuaid), Bishop B(ernard Joseph):
Rochester, N(ew) Y(ork)
to Archbishop (Michael Augustine Corrigan:
New York, New York)
He acknowledges (Corrigan)'s letter of October 4. Of course, (Corrigan) understands (McQuaid)'s motive in taking up the Father (Edward) (McGlynn) business, as his scandal is spreading over the country. When (McQuaid) learned that McGlynn was to be introduced to a Rochester audience by a professing Catholic, (McQuaid) saw his chance. Now that McGlynn has dispelled hope of repentance, duty requires them to oppose him. (McQuaid) regards the dinner scandal as worst of all. The presence of Bishop (John Moore) added to the offense. Their conduct was defiant to the Pope and the ordinary of the diocese. Everyone believes that all present uphold McGlynn, especially as Moore is seeking to reopen the case in Rome. (Corrigan) should do nothing against the laity until after the election and should be cautious about what are called (Henry) George's theories. He should stick to the declaration of McGlynn's letter. Father (John) Edwards has asked (McQuaid) to preach at the dedication of his church. (McQuaid) dislikes accepting, and yet a strong sermon on Catholic education in Catholic schools may do good. What about Father (C ) Farrelly going to Rome to live there as agent for American bishops? The talk about the head of the American church annoys (McQuaid). The good little man is making himself ridiculous. Now that (Corrigan) has started to build his own Seminary, he can resign from the (Catholic) University (of America) board on the plea that he has this work to attend to.

Taylor, Texas
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Toohey wonders what his two superiors think of his promptness in obeying a call. He informed his committeemen that Sunday he will deliver his farewell sermon. His consolation is that he thinks Father-General can be prevailed upon to take him from the missions. The two years he has spent in the missions have disgruntled Toohey. He should have been allowed to finish his year in the novitiate, unless there were charges against him, but if they existed he was never given a chance to refute them. If it was so urgent that Sorin needed to telegraph him in Chicago he would like to know wherein the change of circumstances in Texas has occurred. Toohey is going to attempt to get out of the missionary corps.

Fitzgibbon, John J.:
Chicago, (Illinois)
to Henry F. Brownson:
Detroit, Mich(igan)
Fitzgibbon is happy that Brownson is preparing a work on Synthetic Philosophy and thinks no one is better prepared for it than Brownson, who has all the advantages of inherited intellect, profound study and vast experience. Fitzgibbon thinks the synthetic method the truest and most satisfactory of the schools of philosophy, founded on the nature of the human mind itself, which always wants to see things not only in themselves but in their relations to each other. He would like to have two copies of the book himself, the first two from the hands of the binder, and a copy each for Father T. O'Sullivan and Dr. P. Curran, both of Chicago. He is glad that Brownson will visit Chicago and urges him to use his own home in any way that suits his convenience. He will be glad to be of any possible use in obtaining subscriptions to Brownson's Works.

Dana, R(uth) Charlotte:
Boston, (Massachusetts)
to Henry F. Brownson:
(Detroit, Michigan)
Father (William) Lockhart, whom Miss Dana had introduced to her cousin W(illiam) H. Channing, had used Channing as evidence for his statement that Dr. (Orestes A. Brownson) had in his last years so changed his views that he gave up Gioberti, whom he had always defended, and embraced and recommended Rosmini's as the truest philosophy. Miss Dana found nothing to corroborate Channing's statement, and sent several letters to Father Lockhart, including one from Brownson to Mrs. Smith. So Miss Dana wishes Brownson to see Father Lockhart's reply, in which he states that Channing must have been under a wrong impression, that he will correct the statement in the next edition of the Life of Rosmini, and that he should be happy to make a public statement explaining his error. Miss Dana regrets that Father Lockhart should have been misled and is unable to understand how Mr. Channing obtained his information. Few of Brownson's father's friends of the old set are now alive and Free Thought in New England does not care for logic or true philosophy. Miss Dana thinks, with Bishop (Alfred A.) Curtis that thoughtful men like Dr. Brownson do not change their philosophical opinions often. How Dr. Brownson is missed; and there is no one to follow in his steps. He is among Miss Dana's earliest remembrances, with Geo(rge) Ripley and those men, next when Mrs. and Miss Dana visited him as Catholics. He dined with her father on his last visit to Boston. What kindness of heart added to his force and clearness of expression in that last conversation. Miss Dana rejoices that Catholics in this country now value him very highly, as they did abroad much earlier. Though unknown to Brownson, Miss Dana offers no apologies for writing to the son of Dr. Brownson, her good early friend.
