Higgins, J(ohn): Knock, (Ireland)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Although the Knock of 1887 has not been the Knock of 1880 and 1881, thousands of pilgrims have visited the Shrine of Our Lady. Among the diminished stream of pilgrims there were a number of eminent clergymen. Among the pilgrims who attended the anniversary celebration on August 21 were Father Peter Gallway, S.J. and Father (Thomas) Welsby S.J., Provincial of the English province. Letters have reached Arch deacon (Bartho- lomew) Cavanagh recording the cures worked through Our Lady of Knock, among them one by the Archbishop (John Lynch) of Toronto, testifying to the cure wrought at Knock. The readers of the Ave Maria will be saddened when they learn that the pastor of Knock has been invalided. Although Cavanagh has enlarged and renovated the church he has never appealed for pecuniary sympathy, and thus his church is in debt. Higgins thinks Cavanagh's financial difficulties should be made known so that the friends of Knock will hasten to lighten his burdens.

Signor de Pedroso is a staunch Catholic but Mrs.McAl- aster, Camille's mother, is very bigoted. Mr. Berchmann was ambassador to Washington from Brussels. 1887 Nov. 3
Ward, Father Julius H.: Boston, (Massachusetts)
to Henry F. Brownson: (Detroit, Michigan)

Father Ward encloses a notice of his review of volume 20 of Brownson's Works which appeared in the Boston Herald; the notice from the New York Times, which was similar, he has mislaid. He feels more and more impressed with the weight and magnitude of his father's (Orestes A. Brownson) work. He was a greater man than either the Romans or Protestants gave him credit for being. Father Ward thinks he struck truer American ground for the Roman Church than any of its bishops have reached, and that if the prelates had let him alone he would have done much more for the Church. In Father Ward's opinion, though he is an Anglican Catholic himself, the trouble with all our religionists is that they are more anxious to serve the Church than the natives. Dr. Brownson undertook to serve both and showed how it was to be done. Father Ward has before him at this moment a book which appeared in 1836 called "The Views of Christianity, Society, and the Church", owned by the late Samuel J. May. He is interested in the essays on Dr. Brownson by Father (Isaac J.) Hecker in the Catholic World. He thinks the time will come when Dr. Brownson's life and correspondence will be required as a supplement to his Works, which would enlighten the life of the man. Father Ward would be pleased to meet such a man as he is sure Brownson must be.

Yesterday noon Sorin presented to His Holiness the volume so richly bound and ornamented with the arms of the Holy Pontiff. While listening to Sorin's praises of the Blessed Virgin's celebrated magazine, the Holy Father looked upon its pages with special interest, renewed the blessings on its editors and subscribers and also upon the Catholic press in America. Sorin and Mgr. Dufal retired delighted. Hudson (adds a note on the letter): "How firm Sorin writes. He was never better, it would seem."

1887 Nov. 5
Clarke, Richard H.: New York, (New York)
to (James F. Edwards): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Clarke's delay in answering Edwards' letters was due to the hope that Clarke could tell when the third volume of the Lives of the Bishops would be issued. He is not now able to answer the question. He received two propositions, one from Kehoe and the other from Benzigers, but both proposed to take all the profit. Clarke concluded to publish it himself and also issue the three volumes together as a set. The third volume will cost $3 and the set $7.50 net. Clarke thought of issuing a circular to Bishops, clergy, colleges and universities, and Catholic laymen. He thinks he will propose to the Authors' Club of New York to organize an Authors' Protective Company. The work is now complete and ready for publication. Clarke has some duplicates of the Freeman's Journal and Shea's Series. He also has Bancroft's History of the Pacific States which he wishes to dispose of at the original price of $5.50 per volume. Although the work is justly liable to criticism, there is much of value in it.

1887 Nov. 6
(McQuaid), Bishop B(ernard Joseph): Rochester, N(ew) Y(ork)
to Archbishop (Michael Augustine Corrigan: New York, New York)

(McQuaid) did not find the rescript (Corrigan) asked for. What appeared in the newspapers was a small part of (McQuaid)'s denunciation ofFather (Edward) McGlynn. Bishop (John) Moore, Fathers (Richard) Burtsell, (James) Nilan, (Sylvester) Malone, (John L.) Reilly and others conveyed the impression that (Corrigan) had done the wrong. (McQuaid) may not be able to go to New York before Dec. 11. McGlynn holds out expectation of restoration. (McQuaid) has heard nothing from Father (Terence J .?) Early in relation to his affair. They are anxious to get Early before an ecclesiastical tribunal. Nov.9 This letter was interrupted from Nov. 6. Henry George's vote fell away from 68 to 35 thousand. He got over 800 votes in Rochester, more than is pleasing. The returns are mostly from the German districts. Pat(rick) Ford is lashing McGlynn without mercy. Yesterday, Father (James F.) O'Hare received Msgr. (Thomas S.) Preston's decision. Let them carry it to Rome if they wish. Early was quite sick this summer and sent for Burtsell. If Bishop (John J.) Keane cannot do better than his first article on the (Catholic) University (of America), it will have a sickly birth.

(Maes), Bishop Camillus Paul: Covington, K(entuck)y
to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.: Notre Dame, (Indiana)

Maes asks Hudson to tell Professor James Edwards that he intends to send a wooden crozier of Bishop (George) Carrell, first Bishop of Covington; a mitre of Bishop (August) Toebbe, second Bishop of Covington; a complete set of the Michigan Catholic; and the complete set of the Catholic Chronicle, the defunct Bay City newspaper. That Catholic American Flora was good, if they could get the people to take it up, and they would create a Catholic American Legend for posterity. They must Catholicize the masses and Notre Dame has a chance to do it by manufacturing the necessary leaven of educated boys, Catholic to the bone. If (Charles Warren) Stoddard would come to see Maes, he thinks he could straighten him out. Maes still suffers agonies with that debt but increased hammering has almost broken down all opposition.

(McQuaid), Bishop B(ernard Joseph): Rochester, N(ew) Y(ork)
to Archbishop (Michael Augustine Corrigan): New York, New York)

(McQuaid) sends for perusal the enclosed from Archbishop (William Henry) Elder (no enclosure). Father (Edward) McGlynn will have to take a back seat. The politicians feel that he hurt the labor cause. (McQuaid) intended to go to Newark, but a bad cold and horrid weather counsel him not to leave home. He may not get to New York until Dec.11. They hear nothing from Father (Terence J.?) Early or his friends as to his intentions. McGlynn is to make a lecture tour through England. They sent Msgr. (Thomas J.) Capel; we send McGlynn. What a pair they would make. Bishop (John J.) Keane rebuked (McQuaid) for insinuating to Bishop Richter of Grand Rapids that Capel was not all right. Keane must look on (McQuaid) with big eyes for seeming to censure his friends. (EllaB.) E(des) told his Eminence (Cardinal James Gibbons) in Rome of a letter from (McQuaid) charging him and others with interference in another bishop's affairs. (McQuaid) has done his duty in warning Rome against too much implication in (Catholic) University (of America) buisness and can wait further developments.

Carroll, R(ebecca) and J(eanie): (Washington, D.C.)
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

Although they have been silent they often think of Edwards. He certainly has the "Open Sesame" to the many treasures which he has acquired. It seems that Edwards' presence is sufficient to open the hearts of all around. Their nephew Mr. Fitzhugh is with them. Mary Ewing wrote them of all their friends at St. Mary's. Tomorrow will be the anniversary of the death of Charles Carroll of Carrollton; he was the first cousin of their grandfather Charles Carroll and the guardian of their father and his two brothers. Mr. Thatcher who is writing a history of the District of Columbia called on them for information. Emily B(rent) delights in her sweet cozy home.

The Storers insist on taking him on a cruise on the Ohio aboard their yacht.

He thanks Robert for the chalice which he will give to the priest as soon as he comes. Harry is glad to hear the cheering news of Sally (Sarah Redwood Parrish Seton) and hopes she may be permanently cured. Will(iam) Seton writes hopefully of Cragdon and the growth of Mount Vernon. Harry sees by the papers that the Court of Claims has decided in favor of the claimants in the French Spoliation Claims. They will ultimately get a few hundred from that source. He gives the Ave Marie to Captain Luhn whose children read it.

Hudson's interest in Monsignor Bernard O'Reil-ly's works leads White to ask him for help in promoting O'Reilly's "The Life of Leo XIII", by notices in the Ave Maria. The Italian government journal, Fanfulla della Domenica gave the work a favorable notice, while the Dublin Review either from ignorance or desire to run down the only approved life of Leo XIII in order to increase the sale of Old Castle's "Pope Leo XIII" sold Old Castle for 5 shillings. The press on the continent is unanimous in praise of the work.

(McQuaid), Bishop B(ernard Joseph): Rochester, N(ew) Y(ork)
to Archbishop (Michael Augustine Corrigan: New York, New York)

Telegraphic dispatches will have less to say about (Henry) George and Father (Edward) McGlynn in the future. (Corrigan) should have gone through the formality of a trial before punishing, but he need not trouble himself. There was no question about the truth of the charge for which (Corrigan) punished him. Removal from St. Stephen's was warranted by his incapacity to administer the parish. Father (Richard) Burtsell will of course have a hundred little pettifogging objections. That is his nature. Whom shall (McQuaid) consult? Let the matter rest until (McQuaid) goes to New York for Dec.11. Msgr. (Thomas S.) Preston's letter states that Burtsell proposes to carry Father (Terence J.?) Early's case to Rome on appeal. (McQuaid) does not know what course will be followed in Rome. (Corrigan) knows how Bishop (Stephen M.) Ryan feels, and as he will be in Rome this winter, Early may expect him to interfere. (McQuaid) had so severe a cold he did not dare attend Father (Aloysius) O'Gorman's funeral. (McQuaid) could not have done him the justice that Msgr. (George H.) Doane rendered him in his sermon. They open the new Young Men's building on Thanksgiving. It surpasses all expectations and will not have over three or four thousand dollars debt.

Howe, Frances R.: (Chesterton, Indiana)
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Howe inquires if Hudson has read "Anne" the Mackinac novel which is appearing serially in Harper's Monthly. She thinks it is contemptible trash. Miss Woolson is Cooper's niece. The old families of Mackinac with French and Indian blood consider it an insult. It seems to Howe, Harper's were paid to get up a popular novel against the Indians to justify the conduct of the whites in the Far West. Perhaps when Hudson has read "Anne" he will better see the point Howe attempted to make in her article on Cross Village. Tita, Anne's part Indian half-sister is like Howe, just oneeighth and she does not think she is like that; not even Mary Wicker who was their black sheep can be compared to Tita.

Sorin sees with pleasure the Memorial Hall increasing. Straniero does not have enough money to live well. He tells this to Edwards because he would understand. N. D. McDonald & Co. New Orleans, L(ouisian)a
 to H(enry) F. Brownson: Chicago, Ill(inois)

McDonald & Co. are surprised and disappointed to find that Brownson's Works should be so handicapped in their sale by the extremely small discounts offer but they are not astonished that they are not more extensively sold in the states named in Brownson's letter, for no subscription book can succeed where the disount is so small. Publishers must understand that to sell a book successfully by subscription, they must put such a price on it as will justify them to give such a discount that an honest man can live respectably and pay his way while selling or canvassing. The experience is that Catholic literature is so placed at a disadvantage, such that Catholic bibles could not be sold at prices corresponding with Protestant bibles, until Protestant publishing houses began publishing them. They hope that Brownson will place his books in their hands in the way described, and that their view will be taken in the spirit in which they are advanced.

Richards, H(enry) L.: Winchester, (Massachusetts)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Due to Richards' interest in Catholic Indian Missions, he corresponds with Father Robert J. Smith of Gonzaga College, Spokane Falls, Washington Territory. Smith sent him two letters of Father (P.P.) Prando S.J. on the subject of Crow Indian Missions, which Richards sends Hudson to use to awaken interest among Catholics in this missionary work. Richards thanks Hudson for transferring the letter from the Pilot regarding Father Gal-lagher's school. Is it not singular that the letter is the only allusion to the School Question which he has noticed in the Pilot? Two reasons for this, Richards presumes, are the tradition of Boston in favor of the public school and the young Irish-Catholics who have been educated in them. An important mayorality election is coming up and the Republicans are making a political issue of the school question while the Democratic policy is to fight shy until after the election. At (Patrick) Donahoe's suggestion Richards wrote an article for the (Boston) Globe, which Donahoe took to Taylor for publication, but Taylor replied that they were saying nothing on the subject until after the election. So they suffer all sorts of vulgar and vile attacks without the power to reply. A recent allusion to the Ave Maria and notices of Hudson's book led (Patrick V.) Hickey to relate that Hudson had failed to comply with his proposition regarding an exchange of advertisements and he acknowledged that Hudson's attitude depressed him. Admittedly the Catholic American and the Illustrated (Catholic) are not up to the mark. It would delight Richards if Hudson could respond in a friendly measure to Hickey's proposals.

Dorsey, E(lla) L(orraine): (Washington, District of Columbia)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Dorsey has become an alien to her home and people, and developed into a minor. Her family was given an interest in a Virginia estate which turned out to have a deposit of graphite on it that promises to lift them above want. The estate was crippled with judgements, executive liens and mortgages. To save it Dorsey raised nomey by a second lien on her home and secured the estate. She is struggling to keep the mine afloat, and has received bids from capitalists, corporations and companies, who are trying to insure themselves a hundred dollars for each cent invested. The joint owners of the estate are Mr. Laurence Leith, her sister Clare and herself. Dorsey submits a story entitled "The Litany of Loretto". She will turn to completing "Little Phil" and get it to Hudson. Dorsey has had to deny the false story that she has for two months been the guest of Mrs. E(ddy) in Boston. The woman, whose brother is a theosophist, has become fascinated with the benefits of Theosophy and the report was that Dorsey had abjured her faith and become an enthusiastic proseleytizing Theosophist.

St. Laurent College Montreal, Canada
to (James F.) Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana

Before long he hopes to procure for Edwards some volumes of the "Montreal Free Witness" which for more than 30 years was the only organ of the English Catholics of Canada and had for its editors such men as D'Arcy, McGee, Clerk. He will also try to obtain a set of "Montreal Daily Post", the only Catholic daily paper published on the American Continent in the English language. He sends now "The Spectator", a Catholic College paper published under his direction for a year or so. He urges Edwards to push the project of a fire-proof library building and museum to house his precious mementoes of Catholicity.

Griffin, Martin I. J.: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

He does not think much of the extract from the Smyth pamphlet historically if its statements are like that about James Fund. He presented a new theory about that Fund a few years ago. In no history is there any such event spoken of as James' efforts to convert the Quakers. He enquires about exchanges in newspapers.
