(McQuaid), Bishop B(ernard Joseph):
Rochester, N(ew) Y(ork)
to Archbishop (Michael Augustine Corrigan:
New York, New York)
According to a curious story, Father (Richard L.) Burtsell is going to Rome to plead Father (Terence J. ?) Early's case "ab initio." (McQuaid) first thought that perhaps Burtsell was summoned to Rome to defend himself and others implicated in the Father (Edward) McGlynn business. No doubt, Bishop (Stephen M.) Ryan, Burtsell, and Early will do their best to annoy (McQuaid). In the last number of the Freeman's Journal, Egan lauded Father (Louis A.) Lambert. (McQuaid) closed a forty year patronage after that number. Bishop (Patrick A.) Ludden visited (McQuaid). He laughed a bit over the Father (James S.) Sullivan case. P.S. The Early case is being prepared as fast as possible. (McQuaid) thought that both sides had to be forwarded from the Metropolitan court together.

Seton, Harry:
Fort Spokane, W(ashington) T(erritory)
to Monsignor Robert (Seton:

Robert's charming present reached him two days ago. The portrait came all right, only the glass on Grandfather's was smashed. He has hung them where they can be seen. Will(iam Seton) writes Harry the ever cheering news of Cragdon and Harry does not doubt that it will soon sell for $150,000. If they should only get a few hundreds from spoliation claims Harry would feel quite confident of seeing them all again by next August. Last night he had letters from the boys and Annie (Foster Seton); the boys are doing well in their studies. Harry expects his hunting party back next week. The deer make a pleasant change from tough beef and salt pork.

(McQuaid), Bishop B(ernard Joseph):
Rochester, N(ew) Y(ork)
to Archbishop (Michael Augustine Corrigan:
New York, New York)
(McQuaid) starts in a half hour for the Lake to see how things are getting along. It was publicly stated that Father (Richard L.) Burtsell himself was to go to Rome and Father (Terence J. ?) Early was to foot the bill. (Corrigan)'s right course would be to answer yes to Burtsell's request to go Rome, provided Rome wishes it. (McQuaid) wrote to (Ella B.) E(des) that if the "combine" in Rome made any attempt to injure him, he would go immediately. He will not have any behind-the-door business. (Maurice Francis) Egan did not take the meaning out of (McQuaid)'s letter. (McQuaid) was led to believe Egan was unfriendly to him. Egan's letter shows that he had no such intention. Did (Corrigan) prohibit Burtsell from selling his pamphlet until corrected and approved? P.S. (McQuaid) is glad about what Archbishop (Patrick Ryan) said of his namesake of Buffalo (Bishop Stephen V. Ryan). (McQuaid) could have got their province to take concerted action but for fear of him and Brooklyn.

Clarke, Richard H.:
New York, (New York)
to (James F. Edwards):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Clarke's delay in answering Edwards' letter was due to an ordeal of affliction and sorrow unequaled in his life. The loss of his daughter left him utterly prostrated and he spent ten days in Washington. He feels better, but is not strong and is heavily worked. He is busy getting out the third volume of the Lives of the Bishops as well as the entire set of three volumes. Clarke is having the book printed at their Protectory and is engaged in correcting proofs and sending out 5000 circulars. About one-third of the volume has been electrotyped and work is proceeding rapidly. Clarke has also corrected and added to the first two volumes. He thinks the volume will be ready in April or sooner. Clarke is saving the manuscript for Edwards as he requested.

She has also begun to read his book of "Essays". If (Seton) comes across the river he is not to forget them. P.S. She has just been asked about a little box. She sent back the one(?) of mother of pearl, not knowing they had anything else. The count will send it. 1890 S(eton adds the note): The writer is the wife of the author of "America Heraldica" (which) will be a very scarce book in a hundred years as Dugdale's "Baronage" is in England.

(McQuaid), Bishop B(ernard Joseph):
Rochester, N(ew) Y(ork)
to Archbishop(Michael Augustine Corrigan:

(McQuaid) has talked with Father (John P.) Stewart about Father (Richard L.) Burtsell'strip to Rome. Father (Terrence J. ?) Early said he would gladly pay the expenses for Burtsell to fight his case. (McQuaid) also learned that Early made a will leaving what he is worth to Bishop (Stephen V.) Ryan, on condition that Ryan fight this case in Rome to the end. Early has an incurable disease and will die in a year or two. Should Burtsell go to Rome, (McQuaid) will send Father (James F.) O'Hare. It is a long while since (McQuaid) heard from Via Mercede. Ryan took an Italian priest who can do the translating. (McQuaid) would have small chance if he did not have the law and right on his side. He expected Bishop (Edgar) Wadhams to visit him this week. He will visit Bishop (Richard) Gilmour week after next. Father (Edward) McGlynn'scrazy utterances last Sunday finished him. Some who were going astray are finding out that (Corrigan) was right in his firm course. The Irish World in its last issue was very strong. (McQuaid)'s impression is that Pope Leo XIII will cover in his next Encyclical the whole doctrine of property. This will settle (Henry) George's theories. Were there any hisses at the Papal celebration? The dispatches said there were, but that may have been an invention of the enemy.

Carrier, FatherJoseph, C.S.C.:
Montreal, Canada
to FatherDaniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.:
Notre Dame, Indiana
Carrier read an account of the last illness of Fr. Neyron,and has been edified at his holy death. His has been a rather mysterious life, in some respects. Hudson knows, all at Notre Dame know, as well as Carrier, that he delighted in mystifying people-what one won't say in telling white lies. Bearing this in mind, Carrier has been pained to see in the last number of the "Scholastic" the ridiculously false stories told of him by his over-credulous biographer. Carrier had in his hands a year or so ago, not one, but two certificates of Baptism, or ordination,etc. of Fr. Neyron; and in these certificates, legally certified, the date of his birth was given as 1803. So, the story of his having been a surgeon in Napoleon's army at Waterloo, his being taken a prisoner, etc., is, of course, simply absurd, being only 12 years of age in 1815. Nor did he learn surgery or medicine in France, at all. Thinking that these foolish falsehoods might be copied by newspapers at large, and their fallacy ultimately divulged, Carrier had intended to write to Fr. John O'Connellto contradict them in a very few words, simply stating that Fr. Neyron's biographer had unwittingly fallen into many errors, etc. But even that might not be prudent; and might, besides, be distasteful to the N.D. authorities. So, Carrier leaves it to Hudson and Fr. John, after consulting Rev. Fr. (Thomas) Walsh, to do what will be deemed proper in this case. While Carrier speaks of impositions and lies, he mentions to Hudson the fact that the late Fr. Hallinan never received the title of D.D., except from Mr. Joseph Lyons, and the Scholastic. Very many misstatements have been, to his positive knowledge, perpetrated,
wittingly or unwittingly, he knows not, in the Scholastic, and sometimes even in the extremely guarded, cautious and generally well-informed Ave Maria.
