(McQuaid) Bishop B(ernard Joseph): Rochester, N(ew) Y(ork)
to Archbishop(Michael Augustine Corrigan: New York, New York)

(McQuaid) has no business to bring before the Bishops of the Province. Father (Richard L.) Burtsell's pamphlet may startle them in Rome. The news from Rome is satisfactory. (Corrigan)'s affairs will come out right. (Ella B.) E(des) writes that Father (Terence J. ?) Early's case has not yet come before them in Rome. The Propaganda has written for an opinion in the Father (James S.)O'Sullivan case, even if he is dead. (McQuaid) will send it after Easter. About five weeks ago, (McQuaid) began the visitation of his diocese and is getting along very successfully. When does (Corrigan) propose to go to Rome? (McQuaid) will start sometime in November. Father (Edward) McGlynn has got down to the comic stage in his career. The famous Father (Henry) Egler asked for an "Exeat" and it was promptly given. (McQuaid) said that (Cardinal James Gibbons) is about to visit Boston. (Corrigan) has no doubt seen the European Herald speculating that Gibbons will be the next Pope. Should the Cardinal see these speculations, considerable mental disturbance will result.

Convent and Stiftesdamen of St. Veit at Prague. Hensel means to have such an order in the United States before she dies. Miss Chaffee from Detroit gave a talk on the fine art of conversation at Mr. Dillingham's and is to give one at Galt House. When (Seymour) suggested how delightful a semi-religious home would be, Chaffee gave a tirade against religion.

S(toddard), C(harles) W(arren): Cov(ington), K(entuck)y
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Stoddard liked the "Holy Face" very much. He has just finished "Glimpses at Mission Life in California". He does not know if the many big H.H. Bancroft volumes on California draw from the material that he has used so freely, but no where else has he found anything approaching it in interest. The material is an invaluable addition to the history of California. He gives all praise where it is due-to the Padres. Stoddard is glad that Hudson mentioned Father John (O'Connell, C.S.C.?). He wants a photograph of him and of Father (Nicholas J.) Stoffel, (C.S.C.)and Father S(tanislaus F.) Fitte, (C.S.C.) Stoddard now has forty-four photographs of the college faculty and students. There is fun in (Maurice Francis) Egan's "Good Boy's Diary". Hudson is to keep an eye to the happiness of that "sweet -faced" little one sent to him for protection. God pity the sensitive soul doomed to a life atN(otre) D(ame)! Hudson cannot know the agony Stoddard endured in the year after his return. The thought of those who wronged him and his sickens him. Hudson is to see that the gentle one placed in his charge does not have the germ of Faith frozen by the example of those priests and brothers.

Damien is strong yet though the disease progresses outwardly with some rapidity and has not yet attacked any of the organs. He wishes to be kindly remembered to (Charles Warren) Stoddard. It is fortunate that the balance of the order to Mr. Childs could not be forwarded. Dutton has to set aside attempts of that sort now, since taking up sore dressing the work has increased. Father Albert is in Mauritius, no doubt, so far as known here. The superintendent of the Honolulu water works is there with a gang of men putting down new pipes for their water supply. Minister of Interior Thurston and Agent Meyers have been looking after other improvements. 23 lepers came yesterday. Dutton wishes Hudson could learn of some other vocation to help. The board hired a man. He came, looked at the work and went back asking to be released. He was from the vicinity of Boston many years ago.

(Hill), C.P., Father Edmund: Valparaiso, Chile
to F(athe)r(Daniel E.) Hudson, (c.s.c.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Hill-sends "Mountain Number Four". He likes the new type of the Ave Maria. He hopes to send an article on the "Madonna and Child of the Apocalypse". Cholera still lingers in Valparaiso, Chile. Hill had two cases today. He has taken all of the sick calls as Father Fidelis is busy on their new foundation. They are to lay the first stone for their new convent on St. Joseph's day. What Hill has been reading of the severe winter in North America has made him concerned about Hudson's health.

(MacDonnell), Sister M(ary) Magdalene of the Most Precious Blood: (Bom Sucesso, Portugal)
to Father(Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

She received "Ben Hur" and the book on Dominic O'Daly. Will Hudson enter a conspiracy to pray Wallace into the Church? The book on O'Daly is full of errors and Mrs. Sadlier has given a more interesting account of the Geraldines in "Heiress of Killorgan". Sister sends a little sketch and some verses. Their box for the Pope went at the end of February. They expect a letter daily from Cardinal (Cajetan Alvisi) Masella. Poor Father Damien, yet how happy in the true sense.

Harson, M.J.: Prov(idence, Rhode Island)
to Henry F. Brownson: (Detoit, Michigan)

Harson scarcely knows what particular facts to ask about, in references to Brownson's father's (Orestes A. Brownson) life, since the sketch he proposes to write must necessarily be short, but he wishes to use details which are not to be found in the usual sketches of his life, nearly all of which are made up bodily from The Convert. A comprehensive life is very much needed, and Father (Isaac T.) Hecker, to whom Herson had suggested the project, believes that the matter might be better treated by Brownson. He would like to have information about the brother and twin sister of Dr. Brownson and also when the degree of L.L.D. was conferred. Among the extracts from the press in Brownson's circular is one credited to the American Catholic News which Harson wrote and which originally appeared in the Providence Visitor. Has the Memorial Chapel at Notre Dame been completed, and what are its principle features?

S(toddard), C(harles) W(arren): Cov(ington), K(entuck)y
to (FatherDaniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Stoddard received the bound volume of Ave Maria and the a Kempis. Hudson's letter came with Rene (Papin)'s pages and sketch. Stoddard never saw the "Royal Guardsman." He read "Journey Round my Room" years ago. Rene will be 17 in a year; he is an artist. Paul (Papin) was a musician, but for that he would have been a priest. But art will never come between Rene and the altar. (Luigi) Gregori will see the uncommon individuality in the pencil sketch. A lady from S(an) Francisco, Mrs. Dr. Lane sent Stoddard a volume of her letters of travel and also wrote him complimenting him on "Lepers of Molokai." Stoddard has a paper on Monte Cassino he will send. Has Charlie Porter reappeared?

Mannix, Mary E.: Cin(cinnati), O(hio)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson,(c.s.c.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Mannix does not think that Hudson ought to have sent her any money for those verses. A rich man in Cincinnati who has known her since she was born told her that if he could serve her in any way she should let him know. Her husband has said in various letters that if they had a home of their own they could get along nicely out there. Rents are exceedingly high. She wrote to this widely known philanthopist asking if he would lend her $2,500. The gentleman replied that he could not loan the money because business was bad and offered to give her $200 to pay her and her family's way to California which she refused. Her husband sends regards from San Diego.

to Henry F. Brownson: Detroit, Nich(igan)

The Brownson Club, an organization composed of Catholic Men, young and old, of this city, wishes to get a portrait of (Crestes A. Brownson) for its clubrooms. Dr. J. B. Enright has placed in Cassilly's hands a letter received from Brownson, dated March 1, 1886, in which Brownson states that he has a photograph of his father, from which which an artist might paint a likeness, with a few hints as to color. The Club would like to borrow this photograph for copying or to buy a copy of it if copies are available. If not are available, the greatest care will be taken of the photograph, and the artist will write for suggestions as to color. Cassilly would like to know whether a Life of Dr. Brownson exists, whether it can be purchased, and at what price. The Club has an old edition of his Essays in ten or twelve volumes.

Has she been too savage with the Spanish Father's manuscript. She has read her "Imitation" given her by Mr. Perkins "to pieces".  to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

It will be nice to have "Student Life" in the monthly part. Stoddard is glad Hudson liked "Glimpses". Rene (Papin) is a jewel. Stoddard wishes the little clock might come to him. He prizes it the more because of his association with Hudson. What hours he lived through listening to it, his heart ready to break for fear he might hear a scream from the dormitory where Tom lay. Not for worlds would he undergo again the miserable anxiety of his last year at N(otre) D(ame). Is Brother Benignus back again? Stoddard can feel anyone hate him; N(otre) D(ame) is steeped in this atmosphere and for this reason he fled. There is not room enough in one hemisphere for (Father Martin) Regan, (C.S.C.), (Brother) Lawrence, (C.S.C.), (James F.) Edwards, (Father Thomas E.) Walsh, (C.S.C.) and Stoddard.

On March 21, Clarke sent ten copies of the Lives of the Bishops along with the manuscript. It has been two months since Clarke has heard from Edwards. Subscriptions to the Bishops have been fair, but not enough to get the work out of Clarke's debt. A movement is on foot for presenting a set to the best pupil in each of the parochial schools, to each Catholic college, to each orphan asylum, and then to have the Provincials of each order procure a copy for each of the houses of that order.

Welch, S.J., Father E(dw.) H.:
to Father Daniel (E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Welch's students have two weeks at Easter and he was sent to give a triduum to a sodality connected with a convent of the Holy Child Jesus. The Congregation was founded about a half a century ago by an American lady, a convert Mrs. Connelly, in England. A church called the Gesu is being finished here. There are ten side chapels with a confessional and 13 altars in all. Things are going on prosperously at Georgetown. They are putting up a great clock for their central tower. They hope to finish the main entrance of the new building. Welch understood from Boston that Dr. Dwight gave an elegant reception to the Cardinal. At one in Washington just before Lent Welch saw the late Chief-Justice in perfect health. Did Hudson hear about the circumstances under which Father Gallagher bought the land for the new school? It was a lovely spot on Mt. Pleasant, but the owners would not sell it. Later a man offered to get it for Gallagher as the owner did not want to sell to Catholics. Mrs. Matthews tells Welch that Arthur(?) Weld and family are added to the converts in Boston.
