Shea, John Gilmary: Elizabeth, N(ew) J(ersey)
 to Francis Jacker: (Jacobsville, Michigan)

It is indeed a gratification for Shea to receive a letter from one so near to his late friend. About this time last year Shea received a letter from Father (Edward) Jacker in which he said he would send to the U(nited) S(tates) Catholic Historical Society a pocket missal long carried on the mission by Bishop (Frederic) Baraga. This Shea reported to the Society, and the donation was announced at a meeting and printed in the proceedings. This made Shea anxious to prevent its being lost, but placed where Father Jacker intended. It is, Shea has no doubt, that which Mr. Jacker describes. Shea is very much indebted to Mr. Jacker for the letters of Bishop Baraga, whose portrait drawn by Father Jacker is one of Shea's greatest treasures. Father Jacker's manuscripts on the Chippewa language are of great value, and Shea trusts they will be kept together. Father Jacker understood the language far better than Bishop Baraga, and his critical notes are important. If there is any treatise by him that seems an independent article, Shea will gladly have it printed in the magazine. Shea has been waiting for material to prepare a sketch of Father Jacker's life for the April or July number. His letters to Father (Joseph) M. Finotti and to Shea give much as to his later life. Shea finds it hard to get local pamphlets, synods, statutes, pastorals, controversies, Indian catechisms, and praverbooks printed out West. Anything of that kind, especially of Father Gabriel Richard's time, Shea would be glad to purchase to incorporate in his History. Shea would like to borrow Father Jacker's Register of Mackinaw if it is available.

to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Stoddard thinks that "Adolphus Trollops Recollection" will do for him. He used to see him in Rome. Gratitude is expressed for the little souvenir of Father (Louis) Neyron. Stoddard would like to have a picture of him. The clock has become Stoddard's great joy. Stoddard was awakened out of sleep with a cold sweat, because he dreamed he was back in the old rooms under the old circumstances. Stoddard would like to purchase the little clock from Hudson lent him.

Father Brady sent Ten Broeck "The Watchman." It has a synopsis of Sister Barat'sbiography. It was reproduced in The Catholic Standard. She tried to link Hudson's paper clippings so that it may go as a "Catholic Note." She wrote a few pages concerning Mother Barat. Ten Broeck is a little surprised at Miss Crowley's "want of talent." Sister says that her article on St. Joseph was printed a year ago on St. Joseph in The Pilgrim. Gratitude is expressed for the extras. The Holy Face was admirable. Walsh, (C.S.C.), Father (Thomas E.): Neuilly, (France)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Walsh has received the "Sun" and "Scholastic." The Congress will not open until April 9, and Walsh is to go to Luxemburg with Father (Augustin J.) Louage, (C.S.C.) when it closes. Walsh will write Father Corby from Luxemburg about the house which there has been talk of establishing in this quarter. Louage thinks the grand-duchy would be an excellent recruiting ground for his province. But he says America must come to his aid with a German priest. The ocean voyage lasted only seven days and Walsh spent four or five days in London. In the British Museum, he got an autotype of the original articles of the Magna Charta and another of a deed made by Shakespeare. He intends to forward these two documents to Prof. Edwards for the library. Walsh attended Palm Sunday services at the pro-cathedral at Kensington, but Cardinal Manning was not there. All at Neuilly have been very cordial. Next Sunday there is to be a reunion of old students and they tell Walsh there will be forty or fifty boys of his time present. Msgr. (Bernard?) O'Reilly and Walsh are to represent the science of the U.S. O'Reilly sends his regards, as does his sister, Mrs. () White. They are invited to dine with Msgr. (Maurice) d' Hulst, rector of the Catholic University of Paris. Father Zahm was wrong in stating that all the papers to be read were submitted months ago. Walsh must write about the Congress to Father John for the "Scholastic". There was an ordination here the other day. Among his callers has been the Marquisde (?illegible). He still looks "pretty crazy". He says America is the country for him and will return there when he completes his collegiate course in France.

1888 Apr. 4
Gambosville, Father L(ouis): Newark, (New Jersey)
to Monsignor (Robert Seton): Jersey City, New Jersey)

In Paris there is an institution whose idea has not yet been realized on this side of the Atlantic. Imagine a huge container on an ever burning fire containing dozens of gallons of liquid on which float rabbits' heads, fowls, sheeps' tails, lamb cutlets, etc., etc. and into which the amateurs plunge a fork, seeking to draw out a substantial morsel. There are some who succeed but many who come up with only drops of broth. (Seton) has in his neighborhood a like institution, an "intelligence office" where he can ask how to find the person he needs. If Gambosville finds a servant he will engage her. To console (Seton) in his domestic misfortunes, Gambosville quotes a joke about a hair in the food. (Seton adds a note on the letter) Father Gambosville, pastor of St. John's Church is a very dear, good and learned French priest. 1890.

S(toddard), C(harles) W(arren): Cov(ington), K(entuck)y
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Affairs at the present are much disturbed. Stoddard has laid aside the work that he has been doing on Monte Cassino. Stoddard has looked through the back numbers of the Critic for the clippings that Hudson requested. The little clock is a comfort for Stoddard. One of the boys who was in St. Paul last year wrote him that Charles Porter was drinking and gambling freely. Porter's extremely nervous temperament will break down under it. Stoddard hopes that the "Royal Guardsman," will be on duty before long. Stoddard has a copy of "Our Lady of Good Counsel."

Mother (Mary) Liguori (McCaffery) was the rarest woman that ever lived, her ideal of a religious woman, and now she has gone to her reward. Did Hudson hear that Father Edmund (Hill) C.P., and Father Fidelis (Stone), C.P., had an attack of cholera? They were attending cases in Valparaiso.

S(toddard), C(harles) W(arren): Covington, K(entuck)y
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

What Hudson says about C(harles) P(orter) is what he feared and it saddens him. If he could be taken from his old associates and placed beyond the reach of temptation he would become lamb-like. Stoddard would not stake a pin on his redemption in this life, but his fate in the world to come does not worry him. (Robert Louis) Stevenson is the rage now. Eventually his too numerous books will be weeded out and that which remains will be a kind of classic, but Stevenson will never again be as popular as he is at present.

to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

(Charles Warren) Stoddard has something kind to say about everyone. His mother plans to leave New Orleans shortly and will soon visit the girls at St. Mary's. Aunt Julie says the "Mountain Key" is to pay its first dividends next week. The first dividend is fifteen percent, ten percent of which will be used to pay the expenses of the mill and five percent to the stockholders. It is expected to pay twenty-five percent once all the mills are running. Papin had no idea that Father Thomas Walsh was suffering, he thought Walsh the picture of health.

Hudson has returned his manuscript without reading it asserting he should have to keep it two years before he could publish it. Robinson believed it the best story of its kind he has written. He would have sent it to the Catholic World, but the editor, a friend of his, in answer to W(illiam) Parnell's request returned to Ireland to take a seat in the Parliament, Robinson reviews the plot of the story.

Stoddard understands Hudson's condition when under the influence of the East Wind. People unwittingly destroy Stoddard, their presence is blighting. Afterward came a Herbert (old George) period but it was less pronounced, but he was never original, so he quit.

Richards submits an article. He was impressed with Mr. Allen's address and expressed to him the wish that it should be published, but it has not appeared. The Christian humility and courtesy with which Hudson accepted Richards'suggestion regarding (Patrick V.) Hickey, claims Richards' gratitude. The announcement conferring the Laetare Medal on Hickey and Hudson's notice of it assured Richards that at least one Catholic editor was a true Christian gentleman of the old school. Richards hopes Hickey's visit to the Holy Father may prove a blessing to him.

They are going to Santiago; in June his companion may return to Buenos Aires. Hill may go too but will probably stay in Valparaiso with the Jesuit Fathers. He has written some sonnets to the author of "She", a popular sensational novel. Father F(idelis Stone, C.P.) says it won't be published under Hill's name, since it does not suit the Ave Maria. Ten Broeck, R.S.H., Sister Elizabeth: (Torresdale, Pennsylvania)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Archbishop (Patrick J. Ryan) visited their convent yesterday. Mother Jones sent word that she wants a dozen copies of "Once Upon a Time". With regards to E. V. N., she remembers saying she thought the book would sell better, if supported by the popular magazine in which the stories had appeared, than under a signature so little known. She attributes only good intentions to Hudson, but anyone could see through the intention of the enterprising M(ary) J(osephine) B(rowne). Sister felt sore at the accusation of plagarism before the Mothers and Sisters. Hudson's estimation of the Catholic World exceeds hers by a long distance; she prefers the Ave Maria. Father Brady did not compose the article on Mother (Madeleine-Sophie) Barat, he merely sent her the paper. Sister understands the Chancellor of St. Louis, (Father H. Van Der Sanden) has gone to Rome with the results of the investigation and she presumes that there are other miracles to be reported. Is Hudson acquainted with Father (Charles) Currier, C.SS.R.? He is translating a paper concerning Bishop Neumann into Latin. Currier was to be in Boston to assist at a seance, but the blizzard forced him to remain at Bristol. He is going to write a history of the Carmelite Nuns.

Her refusal to do trade work, take a dozen voices in a class and let them sing anything, and her decision to reside in a convent, which gave the college a Catholic tinge and invoked the disapproval of the Episopalian Bishop, the important social patron, as well as Miss Garrity's decision to employ only Protestant teachers, led to her dismissal. She has opened a school of her own called "St. Cyr". Seymour is in earnest with her plans to establish an order for the higher education of young girls.

P. in the Ave and the bequest of $40,000 to Bishop (Peter) McIntyre.
