1888 May2
Dorsey, A(nna) H(anson): Washington, (District of Columbia)
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Dorsey acknowledges receipt of the advertisement of her book and says she is disappointed that the press notices were left out. They would not only advance her pecuniary interests, but would repair the mistakes and injustice which have hampered her literary carrer. Lady (Georgiana) Fullerton might have written her patronizing lines to encourage a beginner, but they were not intended as a notice of Dorsey's books. They were taken from a private letter to her by Nellie, (Ella Lorraine Dorsey), who while acting with good intentions, did not realize that such faint commendation by Fullerton would be a wet blanket. (Eliza Allen) Starr's cordial words, while favorable to the Uniform Edition would not be as effective as a press notice. The letters of (Pope Leo XIII) and Cardinal Giggons should head the list. She has worked continuously for forty years in the interest of Catholic literature, writing tales which were in their conception and spirit, the first Catholic American tales of fiction published in the United States. She has always written for Catholics, yet a year ago the Catholic World, in an article entitled" "Catholic Writers of America" remarked that the only first rank female writers of Catholic fiction were (Anna Theresa) Sadlier and Christian Reid. She is not railing against Reid; Dorsey simply wants the recognition she has earned.

Ten Broeck, R.S.H., Sister E(lizabeth): (Torresdale, Pennsylvania)
to Father (Daniel E.)Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The Reyista gave her pleasure and the description of the newly placed window was an agreeable suprise. Sister points out a defect in the window given by Mrs. White as a memorial to her daughter Agnes (White). She hopes Hudson enjoyed his anticipated trip to Detroit. Mother Moran has returned to New York. To Mother Edward, she suggested waiting for the three dozen copies of "Once Upon A Time". There is a story of hers now appearing in the Illustrated Catholic entitled "Half a Million For Her Hand".

Hudson, C.S.C., Father Daniel E.: Notre Dame, Indiana
to Father Thomas E. Walsh, C.S.C.: Paris, France

The enclosed clipping from the Liverpool Catholic Times requires explanation. The enclosed clipping from the London Tablet describes Walsh's eloquence as superb. Father (Stanislaus) Fitte is in a sea of trouble with no friendly shore in sight. Father (Andrew) Morrissey is doing the preaching this month at Notre Dame and St. Mary's, to the others' deep chagrin. Morrissey was so disappointed, it is said that on Monday night, he tried all the churches in town for a call. They say, Morrissey was up at four o'clock on St. Mark's day to insure the office of celebrant, and Hudson knows he was vested and waiting long before five. They are planning to circumvent Morrissey on the Rogation days, but it would be downright cruelty.

Dorsey, E(lla) L(orraine): (Washington, District of Columbia)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Dorsey sends chapters ofher latest story. It would be nice if there could be a gathering of the Ave Maria's staff at Notre Dame, Would it be feasible to get up an album of the staff? She made the same arrangement about "Coppinger's Inheritance" as she did with "Two Tramps". Dorsey retained the copyrights, so if the Ave Maria should ever bring it out she could get a percentage on the sales. She is glad her mother (Anna Hanson Dorsey) has started the O'Shea matter. What does Hudson think of her chances of establishing the fact of no authority from N(otre) D(ame).

Shea wrote to Dr. (Richard Lalor) Burtsell advising him to invite Mayor (William Russell) Grace to attend and make some remarks. If he can be induced to do so it will tell; and if he consents, he can probably obtain authority to have the original charter at the meeting. If he cannot or will not, Father (Patrick F.) Dealy has already read a paper on Dongan and can readily give a sketch. Shea requests that the preliminary matter for the third meeting and the recised list of members be hurried up. In it there are letters addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Mercens Spring, grandparents of his Arthur. Poor Father (Joseph) Damien (Deveuster), thirteen years of holy and sublime silence and these upstarts broadcast to the world this melodramatic self-sacrifice, while Damien the real hero, silently lays down his life.

to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

(Mary) Meline informed Mannix that Mr. Schiml, who is stopping at Xavier College, requested her to furnish some contributions for a new Catholic paper he proposes to publish. He claimed to have good financial backing and had just come from Notre Dame, where he had attended college. Mannix inquires if Hudson knows anything about Schiml. She believes Brennan is either a graduate or an undergraduate of St. Xavier's this year, and has seen some verses of his. If there is any financial backing it must be Mr. Poland, who has two sons in the Society. If Schiml is the coming man, why didn't Hudson keep him at Notre Dame?

DeVeuster's condition prevented him from acknowledging receipt of the tabernacles sooner. He describes the building of the new altar and the fitting of the tabernacles. Hudson and all who contributed funds for the tabernacles are thanked by DeVeuster. He is obliged to add an addition to the church and build a new chapel to replace the one blown down by a wind storm. The tabernacle for the Kalaupapa church will arrive by the next steamer from Honolulu. Father (Lambert) Conrardi, who twelve years ago expressed a willingness to come, arrived yesterday from Oregon. The Franciscan Sisters from Syracuse will soon arrive. His agent W.R. Meyer will select the location for the houses and begin constructing them. The government is making such improvements as laying waterpipes, building cottages and a dormitory for the 85 orphans in his care.

Stanfield is sorry her verses for May did not reach Hudson sooner. The literary society, which was established fifteen years ago, has done much for South Bend. While religion is not discussed, Hudson would be surprised to see how knowledge has put bigotry to flight and spread the truth about Catholicism.

Dennehy, W(illiam) F(rancis): Dublin, (Ireland)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Dennehy trusts that his article "A Great Pontiff" has reached Hudson. He plans to send a paper on Aubrey de Vere's latest work. Dennehy has no sympathy with the effort to arouse agitation against the rescript. To admit that the document applied to the actions of some of his people would only show that they were human. He belives there were scoundrels among the crusaders and he sees no reasons why the National League should make itself responsible for the actions of those to whose conduct the words of the Papal document are at all applicable.

Ten Broeck, R.S.H., Sister E(lizabeth): Torresdale, (Pennsylvania)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The sketch of Venerable Louise of Mount Carmel reminded Sister of anecdotes of her pious mother, which she forwards. Father (William) Carroll entertained them with details of his prison work. The newspapers were so positive about giving the golden rose to Miss M.G.C. on the 24th, that Sister thought Hudson would write a "Note" about it. The Misses Drexel make it a point to keep their donations a secret. Two daughters of the late Joseph Drexel of New York were recently baptized. Sister sees that M(aurice Francis)Egan has put his chats about novels in book form, and she has been told that he receives five dollars a page for that work in the Catholic World. She believes several stories which she contributed to the Illustrated American would make a readable collection. Noonan said he could not under take it. Miss Moore sent "Aunt Gertrude's Narrative" to the Ave. It is a true story which occurred at the Dyckman property, afterwards the residence of H(enry) W(ard) Beecher. Mother Collins was disappointed when informed that the books had been engaged from a Mr. Kennedy of New York. Father (Alfred) Young informed her that the Catholic World has improved since Father (Walter) Elliot became editor. Sister discusses changes that are to be made in her work "Once Upon A Time".

to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, (C.S.C.): Notre Dame, Indiana

Egan apologizes for her delay in acknowledging Hudson's letter regarding publication of her brother (the late Patrick Egan's) poems. She agrees with Hudson as to the unequal merit of his poems, but when it is considered that he died at the age of 32, the last ten years of his life consumed with the illness that ended his life, one wonders to what heights he might have soared had he lived longer. She has acted from a sense of duty and desire to please her mother. Egan will be satisfied if expenses are covered.
