Mannix thought Hudson might like to read the editorial in the United Ireland, as representing the feeling of most of the Irish people. She does not fear Irish secession from the faith. Mannix presumes the Sunday Herald was sent to Hudson from Chicago. If all they say is true, San Diego has a great future before it. Mannix submits two book reviews and will forward a third when she gets Hudson's opinion. She does not known who Father "Zelus Animorum" is but he is neither wise nor well educated. to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.:
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Hill submits an article for the Ave Maria. He and his companion went to Santiago to beg. They met with more success than they expected, even though the Archbishop was asking for subscriptions for the new church of San Salvador. In answer to the request of Mother Paul of the Cross, in St. Louis, Hill has written an article on Chile for their magazine St. Joseph's Journal and has asked them to send Hudson the magazine. The Panama route is clear and they ought to get mail within a reasonable time. His sister (Amy) Hill is visiting Tangier, Africa. At Santiago, in the library of the Lazarist Fathers, he found a work called "E1 Auo Christiano" and on reading the history of St. Hermenigild, Hill found his poem knocked on the head.

Browne apologizes for not sending Hudson a copy of her book. She has not received a copy of her book, even though numerous copies have been sold. The publisher, Mr. Kenedy has informed her that he is having her contract drawn up. Regarding the changes suggested by Hudson, she intended to make them in the proof, but never received the proof until the book was electroplated. The idea of having to borrow one's book is ridiculous and has aroused her indignation.

Marine, C.S.C., Father Alexandre:
Tarragona, (Spain)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.:
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Illness has prevented Marine's writing to Hudson. Since leaving Notre Dame, he has been suffering from arthritis. When he wrote to Father-General, Marine expressed a willingness to return to Notre Dame should Sorin order it, but he would be unable to do much after he had returned. Hudson knows what an effect is produced in a house which has a member who has no activity, energy or good health. Superiors do not want such a religious. If Marine is permitted to remain at Tarragona, he believes his health will improve. Father (Augustus) Louage, (C.S.C.) wrote and asked Marine to go with him, but he refused. Marine read in the Scholastic that the novitiate is burnt.

D(orsey), A(nna) H(anson):

to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.:
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Dorsey was delighted with Hudson's notice of "Crasset". "Palms" will be the death of her, for on opening a copy of the new edition, which (Frank) Murphy sent out she found the dedication omitted. Dorsey agrees with the person Hudson mentioned that there are but six real writers in this country. There is not a lady writer in America, who can compare with the best women writers in England. As for male writers, many are called, but few are chosen. As for (Ralph) Waldo) Emerson and Nathaniel Hawthorne, she detests both, but is devoted to (Oliver W.) Holmes, who is the only man of letters that has wit. She has noticed this trait in (Charles Warren) Stoddard's articles. Mrs. (Madeleine Vinton) Dahlgren, while visiting Dorsey inquired if she had read Dahlgren's books. It was embarrassing since Dorsey had but glanced at a few of the woman's stories. Dahlgren has been attentive to Dorsey and her daughter, Nellie (Ella Lorraine) Dorsey, who has attended her elegant entertainments. Dahlgren is a devout woman, yet worldly and full of Frenchiness.

MacDonnell claims that despite the heat wave, the climate of Portugal is sensibly colder than it was when she arrived there in 1865 and it is telling on the orange groves. An attack of rheumatism has prevented her from finishing the translation of the Hungarian Tale for the Ave Maria. As for her story, "My Wings", Hudson improved it greatly. She sends Hudson a photograph of (Cajetan) Cardinal Masella, who is now Econome of the Propaganda.

Peacock asks how many volumes of Brownson's Works are now published; he has the first seven. As a Catholic and a literary man, he is much interested in (Orestes A.) Brownson's writings, used to read Brownson's Review regularly, and is delighted with the collected works so far as he has them. He would like to know whether any life of Brownson has ever been issued, as none is known in England. Sister thanks Hudson and Father (Alexis) Granger, C.S.C. for their contributions to her happiness on her recent anniversary. Hudson should not think that they do not appreciate his list of premiums; the promises of long date that have been given to keep publishers on their feet interfere. Mother Moran wrote that the red paper was not sent to Madison Avenue, but that Mother Hoey had requested Mrs. (Anna T.) Sadlier to procure copies of "Once Upon A Time". Sister thanks Hudson for suggesting Mr. Kennedy. She will think the matter over. Mr. Cunningham would do it but he never has a competent editor.

Dennehy, W(illiam) F.:
Dublin, (Ireland)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Hudson should do what he thinks best on the article about Aubrey de Vere. The chief difficulty he has with the Rescript is that it seems to condemn certain weapons because they have been used for evil purposes. This is the same as telling the world that swords and pistols are to be made no longer, because murder may be committed with either. The more important point is that even British law recognizes the landlord as being only a minor partner with the tenant and not the absolute owner as some would regard him. With this in mind, Dennehy does not like the idea of setting the Irish people half crazy agitating about what they do not understand.

On her return, Dunn gave them his blessing stating they did the right thing. Dunn and Sister Mary Joseph of the Convent of Mercy are her only Catholic friends. She is ready to translate the German stories for Hudson. Fonda requests Sara Trainer Smith's address.

Welch, S.J., Father E(dward) H.:
(Washington, District of Columbia)
to Father Daniel (E. Hudson, C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Father (Robert) Fulton, S.J., is no longer Provincial, but has been succeeded by Father (Thomas J. Campbell, S.J.), former rector of Fordham College. Welch will give retreats at Holy Cross College in Worcester, Massachusetts the priests of the Springfield diocese, Rochester, New York and Philadelphia during the summer. Hudson perhaps heard of the rise in the price of real estate in the district where the president of Georgetown College purchased a country home. This enabled the college to sell a piece of property which was useless to it for $80,000. Welch inquires if Hudson saw two articles in the Advertiser on Indulgences. He believes Hudson could reproduce one of them with profit. What a frightful perversion is Monsignor (Louis) Bouland's; he had charge of the French church in Boston. Welch dined with (James) Cardinal (Gibbons) last Sunday at the dedication of a church at Hyattsville. Bishop (Alfred) Curtis preached.
