Mannix, Mary:
San Diego, California
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Mannix submits another installment of "Two Schools" with an explanation of the story's background. It is amazing how few American Catholics know anything about Archbishop Dupont and other great names in the history of the modern Church. She doubts if (Charles Warren) Stoddard s appreciated by many of the Ave Maria's readers. What a delightful companion he must be; how she wishes Stoddard would write that story with her. Mannix's experience with (Maurice Francis) Egan ould justify the description she was given of him as being both angelic and an eccentric genius, capricious and egotistical. When Egan became the editor of the (New York) Freeman's Journal, he published an article of hers and urged that she devote her time to being a newspaper correspondent. About this time Archbishop (John) Purcell ied; she wrote an article on his life. From then on Egan never answered her letters. Long afterward she remembered that unfriendly relations had existed between (James Alphonsus) McMaster nd Purcell, since the Civil War, when McMaster was a rebel and Purcell a Unionist. Mannix thinks Egan overrated as a writer, but a good critic. (Mary) Meline, who met Egan in New York, call him a boor and a mountain of conceit. Her husband, John (B.) Mannix eceived a letter from a gentleman in Cincinnati, who is interested in the creditor's suit, stating arrangements had been effected by which the trustee would release all claims on a compromise of $200,000. This fund was raised by contributions and the gentleman wanted to know what Mannix or his friends would contribute. Her husband's reply that his life was a struggle for subsistance and that he had no friends ended that. Mannix is incensed against Pope (Leo XIII) or having permitted Prince Rudolph to be buried with the highest honors. Leo XIII is too much of a diplomat for her.

(McQuaid), B(ernard Joseph) Bishop of Rochester:
American College
Rome, (Italy)
to Archbishop (Michael Augustine Corrigan:
New York, New York)
(McQuaid) gave (Corrigan)'s letter of the 1st to Msgr. (Denis) O'Connell fter he asked if (Corrigan) had said anything about Cardinal (James) Gibbons' ermon. The letter contained (Corrigan)'s dealing with McSweeny in Bishop (John) Moore's ase. It was important to let him see (Corrigan)'s version because he was so often misrepresented. (McQuaid) said he would have refused Moore pontificalia if he had been (Corrigan). Bishop John J. Keane ouched on the University subject, which is rare for him. With Keane, (McQuaid) alludes to the University only in a joking way, mentioning various "persons" for chairs at the University. (McQuaid) told him that it was the obligation of the University trustees to submit the statutes to the American Archbishops and Bishops before presenting them to Rome. The statutes have been placed before a commission of six Cardinals for examination. (McQuaid) told Keane he had a right to see them according to the council. All is not plain sailing. (Ella B.) Edes s slow in translating Father (Richard L.) Burtsell's testimony in the Maguire case. The Rochester Union and Advertiser's article on (Corrigan)'s reserved case letter was good. (McQuaid) has had to speak strongly in (Corrigan)'s defense. Many here want peace at any cost. There is no answer yet in the Father (Louis A.) Lambert ase. (McQuaid) is afraid of a compromise, where Lambert would go back to the diocese. By happenings in Rome in favour of Lambert, a strong feeling has been created against (McQuaid) in Rome. (McQuaid) thinks all will come out all right and he will not leave until all is settled, although he is sick of the place and the life.

Mannix submits a translation. Mannix does not know how it is in New Mexico, but here the Spanish people are not good Catholics. Though their houses are filled with images and pictures of saints they rarely attend Mass. She has become convinced that there are no good Catholics in San Diego except a few Indians and Irishmen. Hudson should keep Christian Reid t work for him because her influence is greatly for the good. Does Hudson know the real name of Harold Dijon, ho writes for the Catholic World.

He was surprised to hear that Edwards does not intend to come to Europe until September. He hopes Edwards will be satisfied with the new paintings of Piravi. Straniero knows nothing about the Sisters (of Holy Cross) and approval of the rules. There is a great severity at the Propaganda to let known decisions. They do not know that Straniero corresponds with the Catholic News. The News paid him for the last six months. He has not as yet any other position from the Vatican. He hopes Edwards can send him some Masses.

Shea, John G(ilmary):
Elizabeth, (New Jersey)
to (Marc F. Vallette:
New York, New York)
Shea sent to Father (James H.) McGean ll the papers in his hands: Two by (Rev.) D(r.) (Thomas J.) Shahan; emoir of Robert Walsh, Mrs. (Timothy E.) Howard. hen is the Committee to meet to decide on them? As no election has been held there can be no new Committee, and they seem to take Shea's incidental mention that Walsh and Shahan might be read for the decision of the Committee. This is scarcely regular, but it will be a gain if anything is done. The Very Rev. H. F. Parker ould give a paper on the diocese of Wheeling. But what is the use of asking people to prepare papers, if they will neither read nor print them.
