1889 Dec. 1
Corrigan, Father Patrick: Hoboken, N(ew) J(ersey)

The late Centennial Celebration and the meeting of the first Catholic Congress are great historical events in the Church of this country. The struggles of the Church have been recalled in the great celebration that has just ended, but they are yet to be handed down to posterity by her historians. The man best qualified for this task is John Gilmary Shea. His labors have already completed the history down to 1815. It is most fitting that some effort should be made to enable him to devote all his time to the speedy completion of the history. Corrigan wishes to have a response to his appeal within the present month. The amount may range from ten to one hundred, or more dollars. Money can be sent either to Corrigan or to Bishop W(inandus) M. Wigger. (The approvals of) Archbishop M(ichael) A. Corrigan of New York and of Bishop Wigger of Newark (are included).

to (Henry F.) Brownson: (Detroit, Michigan)

Father Cantwell sends two pounds as an installment on Brownson's Works. Brownson has made him the happiest man on earth, a better man and priest than he ever was, and he sends his thanks and gratitude. He has preached several sermons from the Heterodox writings, correcting when necessary, and they have made a sensation among the congregation of the Cathedral. He hopes that Brownson will give him time to pay by installments; he has said several Masses for (Orestes A.) Brownson, who, he is sure, is in heaven. He has Brownson's Works and the works of Cesare Cantu carefully locked up as his dearest treasures on earth.

The papers have been sent to Bishop (Herman Koeckemann). Fortunately Dutton did not have to reply for it has been decided to let the question rest for the present on Mr. Hastings' defense. Archbishop (John) William' inquiries of Koeckemann required a reply and Koeckemann sent a strong one. Dutton sends some photographs of Father (Joseph) Damien De Veuster) and asks Hudson to forward one to Doctor (Prince Albert) Morrow, another to Father (Ralph) Dewey, S.J. If he should get any pictures from Doctor (Godwyn) Swift, he will send them to Hudson. Swift has many negatives of Father (Lambert) Conrardy and others. Conrardy is a naturally pleasant gentleman, but still a boy in many things. Father (Francis X.) Dutton in his letter spoke in glowing terms of his visit to Notre Dame.

Ireland, Archbishop J(ohn): St. Paul, Minn(esota)
to W(illiam) J. Onahan: (Chicago, Illinois)

The St. Louis (Western) Watchman shows how much reliability can be put on newspaper information. It gave Ireland credit for organizing and bringing to a successful conclusion the (American Catholic) Congress. The good results of the Congress are being made daily more and more apparent. Onahan's first meeting was the acorn for the present tree. He hopes Chicago will win so that the place being agreed upon they can begin to discuss the details of the International Congress which must be the greatest one ever held in Christendom. Onahan will be pleased to know that he suffered in no way from the ( ) Fredericksen failure; he got full value for the lands sold; he is now freed of the option he gave on others. Their consecration of bishops will take place the 27th of December.

Maes, Bishop C(amillus) P(aul): Covington, (Kentucky)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The proof is poetical, but it is not historical truth. Maes sends Hudson the first installment of an historical sketch that will acquaint Hudson with the exact truth. There are three Bismarckians and half a dozen milk and water priests in Covington who worry Meas. Hardly an educated man in the neighborhood and he thirsts for genial companionship. Archbishop (William) Elder is a comfort to him and some of the priests are excellent; but give him the friends of Father Maes. Could he visit Hudson without anybody else bothering about the Bishop, he would be with Hudson next week.

Seton, W(illiam): Paris, (France)
to Monsignor Robert (Seton: Jersey City Heights, New Jersey)

Robert's letter of December 3 came last evening. Sally read it with great pleasure. They like to hear all he has to say about Parbroath Castle and other dear spots in Scotland and England. There is something in that sturdy little island that surpasses in charm to W(illiam) all the other countries of Europe. A late letter from (Henry) Ogden says he has had a virtual offer of $75,000 for Cragdon, but he advises to hold on for $85,000. W(illiam) is willing to accept $85,000 which would give each of them $6,600 in cash. Harry (Seton) and Lizzie (Elizabeth Seton) have wild visions about selling it in lots but it costs much money to sell in lots. Sally and he read about Robert at the Centennial in Baltimore. W(illiam) will see Pere Chocarne again soon. They often pass the church of the Lazarists; was it not there that Robert met Abbe Huc? W(illiam) is glad Robert sees (Louis) Sands now and then; he wears well. W(illiam) has heard from Jevons; all well at Giggleswick. W(illiam) finds the French grumpy; something of the monkey about them. He expects soon an article in the Catholic World, "Disguises of Nature." "Wonders of the Nervous System" which Father Hewitt praised may not appear till Spring. W(illiam) hears that Ned Prime is to wive. (P.S.) Robert is to call on Mrs. Parrish and Mrs. Lee soon.

Since Hill had seen Onahan in Baltimore, and missed seeing him in Washington Nov. 13, he had intended to write. He congratulates, and praises Onahan's work in the Congress, and thanks him on the part of all Catholics. The Congress was an eye opener for the Protestants, as Fr. ( ) Schapman of Chicago informed Hill, it was for most of the (Catholic) clergy. Hill was unable to contact Onahan in Washington, since he had to leave in a hurry to make a report for the New York Tribune. Hill likes Washington but does not think the service of Uncle Sam is as desirable as many people think. Mrs. Hill's health is better but still far from well. Merry Christmas:

As soon as Onahan wishes the introduction, he should send it to Detroit, since Hughes is going there this evening. Hughes has decided to sell the book for $2.50, which will be out next Monday. He sends money for a subscription for William Bender and the balance of $5 for Father Fidelis (Stone, C.P.). He sends a picture of part of the coast together with three old faded photos for Hudson to view and send out as instructed. Father (Francis X.) Dutton, (Elizabeth) Harper and Hudson might add some notations for the edification of Sister Ignatius as well as Father (Joseph) Damien (De Veuster's) brother and sister. On December 25th at 4 A.M., the bells were rung for the first time for High Mass. He sends a dollar which he asks Hudson to forward to Father (John) Slattery, at St. Joseph Seminary, Baltimore. Dutton wrote to Father O'Callaghan urging him not to make any promises and to write him about Mr. R.'s disposition. The house for the Sisters at Kalowao is completed; they have 89 girls. There are 103 boys who are harder to manage. A band of nine sisters at Elyria, Ohio wrote Dutton they are anxious to come. Dr. (Godwyn) Swift took a photograph of the new altar and another of the old altar especially for Hudson. Harper, her sister Mary and her brothers who live at 88 Sand St., Brooklyn, received a special blessing from Pope Leo XII for their works of charity. Dutton sends Hudson the candle that De Veuster held when he died. His Godmother (Mrs. B. J. Semmes) claims that she found the application of a piece of DeVeuster's habit effective in the severe illness of her husband Mr. B. J. Semmes of Memphis.

to Dr. (John Gilmary) Shea: (Elizabeth, New Jersey)

When Father Corrigan called on Dr. Shea in Baltimore during the Catholic Congress and urged him to abandon all other literary labor in favor of the speedy completion of the history of the Church, Shea told him of the time and the expense that such a course would entail. Corrigan asked Shea to give him one month to prove that Shea's clerical and lay friends would be willing come to his aid. The response of the clergy has been so enthusiastic that he feels justified in exhorting Shea to go on with the good work. The three years regained for the finishing of the history will give Corrigan ample time to hear from clergy and laity. He encloses a check for a thousand dollars. (The cancelled check is enclosed).

Seton, Alfred: New York, (New York)
to Monsignor Robert (Seton: Jersey City Heights, New Jersey)

He trusts Robert has not though him lacking in appreciation of Robert's efforts to secure the family memoir which he sent. He has been so busy since they got back from their wedding trip. If Robert has any more struck off Alfred would like to have one to send to his father. Alfred appreciated the trouble Robert took to come to his wedding. Robert is mistaken in supposing that Alfred is no friend of Robert's side of the house. Alfred never lets differences of religion make any difference in his friendships. Some of his warmest friends, the Iselins, are of Robert's faith. Robert is also mistaken in thinking that Alfred does not fully appreciate the value of his lineage; it has been a never ceasing source of consolation to him. (P.S.) He would be very much pleased to have the papers relating to James Seton.

W(elch), S.J., Father E(dward) H.: Geo(rge)town, (District of Columbia)
to Father Daniel (E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Welch saw Father (Thomas E.) Walsh; together they had a visit from Father Tim(othy J. Danahy) and Father (Joseph B.) Gallagher. Father (Robert) Fulton, S.J., had made additions to Boston College. Their old friend Miss Carey is doing what she can for the fair. In Boston Welch and Father (H. J.) Shandelle, S.J., visited Mrs. Dwight senior and Dr. Thomas (Dwight) and wife. Eulalie Iasigi wrote at Christmas time; she and Mamie (Iasigi) have bought a small house. Dr. Duan, Willie, is wonderfully successful but Welch's friend Andrew is bandly off. As soon as the five year partner ship with Edmund Kinney is over he will be left without any means of support. Father Willi(am P.) Brett (S.J.) is now teaching philosophy at Woodstock. In the Archdiocese of Boston there is much activity in the parish schools which are large and well attended. The Sisters of Notre Dame of Namur are in charge of St. Mary's School and many others. He paid a visit to the University; Bishop (John J.) Keane was exceedingly courteous and showed him the house. He met Father (Augustine F. Hewit) Hewitt for the first time. This year Welch is prefect of studies and teaches German. Father (A.F.) Ciampi, S.J. is with them this year and is very much broken.

(McQuaid), Bishop B(ernard Joseph): Rochester, N(ew) Y(ork)
to Archbishop (Michael Augustine Corrigan: New York, New York)

He has received (Corrigan)'s letter of Dec. 27 (McQuaid) proposes to go to New York next week, before (Corrigan) leaves for Rome. It is the best thing (Corrigan) can do. (Corrigan) will find Cardinal Mazzella a friend. He should try to get Msgr. Boccali on his side. Bishop (Patrick Anthony) Ludden was in Rochester. He seems that 40 or 50 parishioners have asked him to remove (Father James L.) Meagher. Ludden declined to interfere because Meagher would appeal to Rome and Ludden would be defeated. In no part of the world are Bishops treated as here. The Father (Louis A. Lambert) case was to be finally decided Dec. 16, so wrote (Ella B.) E(des). What will the world say when (McQuaid) publishes all the documents in the case, including the Tarutuffe letter, and Lambert's falsification of it in his report to the Propaganda? (McQuaid) avoided writing about Father (Richard L.) Burtsell, leaving (Corrigan) to his own judgement. (McQuaid) is delighted (Corrigan) has found a suitable spot for his new seminary. (McQuaid) is at a standstill about his. St. Andrew's is doing well this year. The Catholic University is lapsing into quiteness. There are nearly 100 atudents at Cornell University. One of the tutors is Catholic. He is at the head of a Catholic Union. At one time there was tendary among some professors toward rationalism, but this has changed of late. (Henry) Romeike sent (McQuaid) some presscuttings. Has (Corrigan) seen "le Pape de demain?" It will turn the head of Baltimore, only it is already on the Index.

(McQuaid), Bishop B(ernard Joseph): Rochester, (New York)
to Archbishop (Michael Augustine Corrigan: New York, New York)

In looking over the letters returned by (Corrigan) he finds that the letters of the Propaganda and (Father Louis A.) Lambert's act of submission are wanting. These in particular are what (McQuaid) needs. No word from Rome as yet. (McQuaid) will be in New York Tuesday or Wednesday. Has (Corrigan) seen the copy of the Propaganda letter to Archbishop (Patrick William Riordan) of San Francisco in re (Father James Edward) Quigley. (McQuaid) wonders if they know at Propaganda that Quigley is a cousin of the Archbishop. Bishop (Richard) Gilmour demands a juridical trial. He does not want any behind-the- door work. By the time they are done, they will know more in Rome of American affairs than they do at present.
