to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
(Alfred T.) Perkins enjoyed his visit to Notre Dame. Stanfield thinks he has tried to steel his heart against the allurements of Rome, thinking his longing in that direction inconsistent with his position as an Anglican clergyman. His daughter, Bertha (Perkins) told Stanfield that she wanted to become a Catholic. Stanfield sends Hudson Mr. Rabe's letter. His mother was a Catholic but he drifted away.

The two volumes of Alfred Edersheim's "Life and Times of Jesus, the Messiah" are satisfactory to Catholics, though the Oxford professor is a convert from Judaism to Protestantism. He refutes the modern flaunters of Christianity, but is a most insidious Gospel guide when he antagonizes the true Catholic position on Our Lady.

(Hill), C.P., Father Edmund:
Buenos Aires, (Argentina)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Hill has been waiting for the December number; Father Constantine sent it away before Hill came. Some of their Irish friends took just offence at Father Fidelis (Stone, C.P.)'s sermon in Chicago. Fidelis was not careful to distinguish between their mission in Buenos Aires and the one in Chile. The Fathers here say that Hudson's paragraph in the Ave Maria must also give offence. Fidelis is in Chile now. He and two other Fathers and one Brother are in the new house at Mira-Mar near Valparaiso. On the journey across the mountains Fidelis got a kick from a mule so that he was unable to return for the cornerstone affair they had here on Sunday. The new church will be large and fine.

Shea, John G(ilmary):
(Elizabeth, New Jersey)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Shea hopes to see Hudson in a few days and sends a short sketch for the "Ave Maria." One of Shea's articles in the "Catholic News" caught the eye of Archbishop (Francis August) Janssen(s) and led him to learn all he could about the devotion. The Ursulines drew up accounts for him, from which Shea has written what he sends.
