Corrigan, Father P(atrick):
Hoboken, N(ew) J(ersey)
He addressed a circular last December endorsed by Archbishop (Michael A.) Corrigan and Bishop (Winandus M.) Wigger, in reference to the raising of a fund to enable Dr. John Gilmary Shea to devote all his time to the completion of his "History". The impaired health of the historian at the time, as well as the fear of his assuming other literaty engagements with the new year, inclined many to defer answering the circular. Shea's health has been entirely restored, and Corrigan has anticipated the generous responses of the clergy by making final arrangements with Shea to complete his work. The first two appeals were not successful. The success of this latest appeal will free Shea from anxiety and present him with a handsome balance when his work is done. Shea expects to finish the history in 1892. It may appear among the Catholic exhibits at the World's Fair. (Endorsements by) Archbishop Corrigan, and Bishop Wigger (are quoted) and extracts from a letter of Shea to Corrigan dated December 30, 1889 (are given).

In looking over the Souvenir edition (of the Catholic Congress) published by Mr. Hughes, Dougherty finds many errors in his speeches. He is disgusted to the extent that he wishes Hughes would never have published it at all. While in Chicago he went over the proof with Onahan's nephew, but had no copy with him. He corrected errors that occurred to him at the moment, but now he discovers whole passages omitted. He doesn't know why Hughes wrote him, but he cannot forbear writing to Onahan. If Hughes prints any copies for Onahan, Dougherty hopes Onahan's speech is printed correctly. He has not heard of any good news for his son Frank. (Envelope attached.)

Brownson, H(enry) F.:
Detroit, Mich(igan)
to M(ichael) P. Dowling, S.J.:
Detroit, (Michigan)
On his return from the East Brownson finds a copy of the Michigan Catholic containing a report of his lecture at the Church of which he is pastor, on February 2, 1890. He is reported as saying, "I say this with due deference to the writer of the preface to the Souvenir Volume of the Catholic Congress, whose unproved statements are worthy only of such consideration as the authority of the writer as a man of observation and culture can give them." The statements are undoubtedly those made by Brownson, that Catholics are less educated than non-Catholics in English-speaking countries; that the mass of Catholics are comparatively uneducated; and that the graduates of Catholic institutions of learning are inferior in literary and scientific scholarship to those trained in other schools. That these statements are not proved in the Introduction is unquestioned, but the expression 'unproved statements' would seem susceptible of another meaning: namely, statements that cannot be proved or false statements. Brownson therefore inquires of Dowling how he is to understand these words. Objection has been made elsewhere to the same passage in his Introduction, but he did not regard a discussion of the comparative merits of Catholic and non-Catholic education in this country as likely to be beneficial. But when the objection is made in the pulpit of the parish church to which Brownson belongs and by the pastor of that church, who demands proof of the statements made, he feels bound to attempt such proof, even at the risk of saying much he would otherwise leave unsaid. (A first draft of this letter in Brownson's handwriting is included).

Dowling, S.J., Father M(ichael) P.:
Detroit, (Michigan)
to (Henry F.) Brownson:
(Detroit, Michigan)
Dowling has Brownson's letter, in which he takes exception to some expressions found in the published report of a lecture Dowling delivered in the Church of SS. Peter and Paul, Detroit. In that lecture he found fault with the disposition sometimes evinced by Catholics to contend with one another, instead of directing their united energies against the common enemy and with that class of newspaper writers who seem to take special pleasure in attacking Catholic colleges and academies. Many of his hearers, being personally acquainted with Brownson and his work would naturally ask about him in this connection. Dowling's answer to this tacit objection, without taking direct issue with Brownson was to intimate that since his statements were not proved, it did not devolve on him to take them up; that they only had such value as they derived from Brownson's reputation as an observer, a scholar, and a writer. What qualification this implied some of his hearers no doubt were quite as competent to determine as himself. His words are not to be construed as a challenge for Brownson to prove what he said, and he disapproves of some of his statements and doubts very much whether they can be proved. But he could not challenge Brownson to prove them without entering into and encouraging domestic warfare among Catholics. Besides their relations are such that few would be edified by a public controversy carried on by a pastor of a church and a member of his congregation. The result would be equally disastrous no matter which of them might carry his point. If, however, Brownson thinks that honor demands that he undertake to prove every statement of his which may be criticized, he is not without grounds, since a professor at Mount St. Mary's Seminary has already sufficiently opened up the subject in the Catholic Review. Dowling wishes nevertheless that Brownson would consider him outside the field of any possible controversy. In return for Brownson's frankness, Father Dowling states precisely what he objected to in Brownson's Introduction to the Souvenir Volume and gives his reasons for the objections; and trusts Brownson's discretion on the matter. (This letter is evidently a copy of Dowling's original, in the handwriting of Brownson).

(Montreal, Quebec)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Yesterday O'Neill sent Hudson a translation of Abbe A. Durand's article on the Holy Letter. Anyone who read (Daniel) "Arthur" (Paul's) article "Our Lady of the Epistle in the Janiculum" must have concluded that the tradition referred to is merely a pious belief. If Paul were still alive, O'Neill would inquire what he meant.

Ignatia, (C.S.C.), Sister M(ary):
Austin, Texas
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
"The Dream of Michael Angelo", written by S. G. Sneed, appeared in the Ave Maria. It was originally published in the Texas Review. Sneed, an experienced journalist, and a benefactor of the Sisters of Holy Cross in Austin, called on the Sisters Sunday and charged that the article had been published after being mutilated and was published without credit to him, with Hudson's full knowledge. They write Hudson to explain the situation that he might take action to exonerate Notre Dame and the Ave Maria. Will Hudson remember Brother Athanasius on the 22nd, the twentieth anniversary of his death?

One needs to assert oneself as to religion and nationality here. Many are Catholics in name only and ashamed of being Irish. Mannix knows a Miles Galligan, who appropriated building association funds in Cincinnati. John B. Mannix advanced the money and got him a job in a railroad depot. He left his situation after paying little more than half the debt. Her illness is caused by mental strain, the cause of which she would tell Hudson, if she thought it would do any good.

What Edwards writes causes him great pain. However, Wood had some reason to suspect it is the truth. He had hoped for a career for Paul (Wood) as an artist under the patronage of Notre Dame. It seems that this is not to be realized. He will tell the reasons in a personal interview with Edwards. Things would have been different had Paul not been deprived of Edwards' society last summer. Richards thanks Hudson for his note and for returning the item about E. O'G. Fenton has fallen from his original righteousness. He encloses a P.C. circular sent to (Patrick) Donahoe. 50 of these vile books distributed over the land. He was glad to meet Brother Jarlath (Jeremiah O'Brien), but regretted not being able to do more for him. There is much difficulty in getting the men of Winchester to subscribe to Catholic newspapers. Father (Denis) Lee called upon the men to subscribe to the Catholic American. The fact is that they want nothing more religious than the Herald and the Globe. Richards is much exercised at present by the insidious policy of the "Boston Public School Union".

Baroux, Father L(ouis):
Cadillac, Mich(igan)
to Father (Thomas E. Walsh, C.S.C.?:
Notre Dame, Indiana)
(Copy). (Walsh) was kind enough to send Baroux a photograph of Father Sorin at the time of his jubilee. Baroux will send today (no enclosure) the photograph of the church of Chittagong in Bengal; Father Voisin who died in (18)55 in that mission had made the design with a pencil. When Baroux came back to France in (18)57 the Christian Brothers made a picture of it. No doubt Fathers Sorin and Saulnier will be glad to see the photograph. The church is 145 f(ee)t by 60; it was built several years before Baroux went to India. Last week Baroux sent a copy of the picture to Father Roche; he will be surprised to receive it from America. Below (Walsh) will see a country church that was built in (18)59 in the mission formerly called Pokagon, now called Silver Creek. When Baroux was coming back from India November 3, 1857 he went on shore at Kedgeree to send 2 dispatches. When they were coming back the tide was so strong their little boat turned over. 6 men were in the water; Baroux was brought on deck but left as a corpse. A few minutes later he opened his eyes and inquired if the captain and sailors were saved. Baroux made a vow if he was saved, to build a church in honor of the Sacred Heart of Mary at Pokagon where he had been 6 years before. This is the origin of that church. In (18)59 Baroux was in America to fulfill his vow. The church and house (Walsh) sees is Baroux's house in Cadillac. When Baroux came here 3 years ago he had no house nor chalice. Last spring they built the tower on the church and bought a bell of over 1000 pounds. They have made over $400 of improvements inside the church. Below (Walsh) sees another house that Baroux built at Pokagon. At the side of that is a brick house of 12 rooms. Father (Alexis) Granger, (C.S.C.) spent 2 months in that house then Granger was sick. Baroux built that house in 1871. Below is the church of Rush Lake he built for the Indians. The place was formerly called Brush Creek. He built that church in (18)63; at the same time he was building his house at Pokagon. The altar (Walsh) sees was built in (18)83 in Montague. (Walsh) can see that Baroux has not been idle since he came back from Asia. Now he has 100 miles of missions in 6 different counties. He has 3 churches to attend and about 20 other missions. Tomorrow will be Baroux's birthday; he will be 73. He sends his photograph (no enclosure) taken 2 months ago.

If Brownson comes to Nottingham next summer, Cantwell, if still here, will entertain him; and if he has a mission of his own, may arrange for Brownson to speak. The discourses which he gave from Brownson's Works were highly praised. Cesar Cantu has suffered greatly from influenza, the journals report.

The portraits by Signor Carnevale are ready to be sent. Perhaps they can send them in the box of the Archbishop of New York who will come to Rome on his return from Palestine. She has heard nothing of Edwards' host of last summer. Miss (Mary Gwendolyn) Caldwell of University fame was in great danger of death from typhoid fever. She sent Father (Daniel E.) Hudson a copy of the "Osservatore Romano" in which she gave account of the doings at Baltimore with mention of Father General (Edward Sorin, C.S.C.). to (James F. Edwards:

Miss (Emily C.) Brent is not well; she is suffering from extreme nervous depression on account of some mismanagement about her business. It really has a most unhappy effect upon her mind. She shrinks from her friends and dwells all the time upon her misfortune. Edwards should write to her soothingly and in his usual strain.

to (Willia)m J. Onahan:
(Chicago, Illinois)
O'Sullivan is thankful for the copy of "Proceedings (of the) American Catholic Congress" which Onahan has sent. O'Sullivan regrets that he was unable to attend. There is one other Congress which he envisions — a Congress of the scattered children of Erin, on the plains of Tara, when Ireland regains self-government. Since O'Sullivan is beginning a Catholic Columbus Club he asks Onahan to send a copy of the constitution of the Chicago Club which Onahan organized.

Kearney, J( ) J.:
Washington, D. C.
to W(illiam) J. Onahan:
Chicago, (Illinois)
Kearney is pleased at Onahan's prompt answer, and he himself would have answered sooner, but he was waiting for results expected from the efforts of Pres(iden)t Shorthall. A few hours ago, a letter from Kearney's daughter stated that she was sent for by the committee and informed that "through the consideration for Mr. Onahan she would be allowed several weeks leave of absence without pay, but that her sister Belle could not be employed as a substitute", placing her in a peculiar position. Kearney at once telegraphed Belle to come home, since he fears the Committee may think there was some collusion in the matter. Leave without pay is mockery, since she has no means and Kearney's doctor bills prevent him from helping. Had the Committee informed Onahan of their plans, everything would have been settled. Both of Kearney's daughters feel keenly over the mistakes of their father. He hopes for Onahan's sympathy, and that Onahan will attribute any mistake to paternal solicitude.

Marchal, Marie:
Paris, (France)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
For some years Marchal has been the Paris weekly correspondent of the London Tablet, but a letter from the editor, (John George Snead) Cox, informs Marchal that the Paris Letter will be done by a permanent member of the staff. The Catholic press of England is not flourishing probably because those who ought to uphold it prefer subscribing to Protestant papers. Marchal was also correspondent for two years to the Catholic Review of New York, before the death of (Patrick V.) Hickey. The new editor has not asked Marchal to resume the letters. She inquires if Hudson would accept a monthly correspondence from her for the Ave Maria.
