He is glad that Paul (Wood) is with Edwards. He feels that it is important that he should pursue his studies away from home. He has no confidence in studies pursued by a boy alone. Paul has the bad habit of smoking cigarettes. He cannot break up that vice and thinks that Paul will work better if allowed to smoke at proper times. Paul has too much thought and too much care in regard to his personal appearance. Paul is inclined to the natural sciences and should be encouraged to study the things he likes.

They enclose a short life of the young Duke of Burgundy. Cadbury and Brothers, a Quaker firm, employed more than one hundred Catholics among its workmen. Their priest found out that the men were attending prayers every morning before business began. They said they must do it or lose employment. Father ( ) Hymen went to see Mr. ( ) Cadbury to ask that Catholics be excused from attendance. Cadbury refused. Hymen went to the bishop who said it must not be done. Hymen then went to Cardinal (Henry) Newman, who had no suggestion to make. Hymen went back to Cadbury, who now granted the request. Newman himself had gone to the firm and was so persuasive that Cadbury could not resist him.

Brownson, H(enry) F.: Detroit, Mich(igan)
to (James F. Edwards): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The engraver works from prints with negatives, so Brownson had the prints made. On examination, he finds they are nearly all poor photographs, some sharp enough about the head but indistinct in parts, so that he cannot make good pictures of them. The frame is omitted on one side of some, which would make it necessary to cut off the other sides. They also are bad in size. Brownson asks if the photographers guarantee satisfaction; if so, they might do better. He regrets making so much trouble but believes whatever is worth doing is worth doing well.

to (Henry F. Brownson): (Detroit, Michigan)

Hudson thanks Brownson for his letter of the 12th. Illness has prevented an earlier acknowledgement. His regret regarding the extracts is on account of causing Brownson so much trouble. The extract he sent last is used for the "Readings" this week; it suits its double purposes well. Tarducci is accurate and thoroughly versed in his subject, and the Life light go well. He hopes Brownson is feeling very much letter than he is.

Allen, Father Edw(ard) P.:
Mt. St. Mary's College Emmitsburg, M(arylan)d
to Captain Henry Seton: (Fort Spokane, Washington?)

Mrs. (Anne Foster) Seton spoke to Allen about placing John (Foster Seton) at college for another year. Knowing how little interest John took in his books last year Allen does not think it would be well to place John in school again until he sees a little more of the world. John is a good boy and has formed no bad habits. A few days ago Allen told Mrs. Seton he thought it would be a good plan to put John in an architect's office; John has a talent for drawing and this business is an honorable and lucrative one at the present time. It ought not to be difficult to get a position in some of the offices in Baltimore.

Shea, John Gilmary: Elizabeth, N(ew) J(ersey)
to Father P(atrick) Corrigan: Hoboken, (New Jersey)

While enclosing a receipt for $1000, the third payment made by Corrigan this year, he must express how much he and all Catholics owe to Corrigan for the generous friends he has interested in the Church History of this country. The accident made it very difficult for Shea to continue his work, but Corrigan's action enables him to complete the work as he projected it. Besides adding steadily to his stock of documents from Rome and diocesan collections here, he has acquired a rich mine of other material. Since the beginning of the year he has laboured on his third volume. He can finish it next month. He will then set out for the West in search of documents and letters, and upon his return he will begin writing the fourth volume, which he hopes to complete by the first of May. He hopes to be able to issue the final volume early in 1892. His aim is to be able to finish the whole work before the Columbus centenary. He hopes to receive a complete list from Corrigan of those who cooperated with him so that to them he may dedicate his fifth volume. (An incomplete copy in the handwriting of James F. Edwards accompanies this letter).

Richardson asks Hudson to explain a recent article by Charles W(arren) Stoddard on Easter Eve in Oberammergau. He encloses a poem which was once published in a Canadian Catholic paper. The author of "Three Happy Weeks" was misinformed as to the Provincial Governor of Quebec attending the Protestant Cathedral. The governor of that province is always a Catholic.
