Welch, S.J., Father Edw(ard) H.: (Washington, District of Columbia)
to (Father) Daniel (E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Welch had a letter from F(ather) Tim(othy Danahy who said Hudson was not well. F(athe)r Robert Fulton, (S.J.) has gone to California for his health. F(athe)r Tim tells Welch there are 315 at Boston College. Holy Cross is flourishing with over 200 boarders. F(athe)r (Henry J.) Shandelle, (S.J.) has 42 in his rhetoric class. Welch asks Hudson if he saw Dr. (Thomas) Dwight's introductory lecture at Harvard Medical School. Eulalie Iasigi paid them a visit a short time ago. She came with Mrs. Charles Honen (?) to Baltimore to see Antoinette Sister Angela Honen(?) the Carmelite. Welch is teaching metaphysics this year. F(athe)r ( ) Connolly has taken the place of prefect of studies. He was Willie Duan(?)'s teacher in rhetoric. Their Berkeley Street Sodality in Boston, over which Miss ( ) Carey presides, is gradually increasing and has opened a night school for poor girls. ( ) Dorsey has apostatized and taken his family with him His wife, Emily Farnum, was a convert of Welch's. Welch saw Hudson's sisters on Mass(achusetts) Ave(nue) some time ago. F(athe)r (A.F.) Ciampi(S.J.) left at the beginning of the year for St. Aloysius, Washington.

1890 Nov.3
Malbon, Charles: Durham, England
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

In 1866 Malbon's parents became annual subscribers to the Ave Maria. The magazine became his familiar companion. Early in 1872 Malbon's parents left Canada and since then until this year they have not seen the Ave Maria. Malbon is in Deacon's Orders. His present position he owes in large measure to the Ave Maria. Malbon sends a copy of the poems of R. H. Domenichetti, an Englishman educated at Oxford where he fell in with some young men with ritualistic tendencies. He was received into the Church by the Jesuits of Oxford. Dr. (Edward) King, present Protestant Bishop of Lincoln, did all in his power to draw him back. Domenichetti left Oxford with the permission of his Bishop, Dr. (Arthur) Riddel; he returned to contest for the Newdigate Prize, which he won in 1885. Domenichetti is coming in a few days to St. Cuthbert's College to begin a three years' course of divinity for the priesthood. His conversion has been a great blow to his Protestant relatives. Stonyhurst alone of any Catholic College in England approaches St. Cuthbert's.

1890 Nov. 5
Onahan, W(illiam) J.: Chicago, (Illinois)
to J(ames) F. Edwards: Notre Dame, (Indiana)

Onahan emphasizes the fact by putting it in writing that the correspondence relating to the Catholic Congress of 1889, which he lately sent to Edwards for his museum is to be regarded as confidential, since he had no opportunity of examining it anew before sending it. He believes there is nothing which could cause trouble, but many were written in confidence and honor requires that they be so regarded. He is confident that Edwards will live up to the agreement, until enough years elapse that the papers could hurt no one. His purpose in turning the papers over to Notre Dame is to preserve them as historical memorabilia of the first American Catholic Congress.

1890 Nov.11
(Shea, John Gilmary): Elizabeth, N(ew) J(ersey)
to Father (James H.) McGean: (New York City, New York)

He annexes a list of deceased patrons to the number of fourteen; and of patrons who have not sent in their payments for Volume 3; many are personal friends who need only to have their attention called to the matter. After Shea's accident and the shabby treatment of the Frank Leslie concern, his first object was to find a position to support him. He thought of how he could return the money to those who had paid for Volume 3, if he had to let it drag for some years. He encloses a circular (no enclosure) which he sent out when Volume 2 was finished. Just before his accident he concerted with Msgr. (Arthur J.) Donnelly and Msgr. (John M.) Farley for the other circular which he encloses (no enclosure).

S(toddard), C(harles) W(arren): Washington, D(istrict of) C(olumbia)

Hudson's letter is delicious. All Saints Day was the 23rd anniversary of Stoddard's baptism. Mr. I. has heard nothing of the trouble at Notre Dame. Stoddard will try to have "Traces of Travel" started by the time Hudson needs them. He may send the Legend of Lanai an installment per week.

1890 Nov.13
(Hill), C.P., Father Edmund: Buenos Aires, (Argentina)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Since the "Catholic Quarterly's" arrival F(athe)r Fidelis (Stone) got a letter from Dr. ( ) Horstman the editor, requesting a contribution. At present Hill is giving a mission. Once back in Chile, Hill hopes to stay there and find time for reading and writing. The news from Rome has come and is very unsatisfactory. They are promised a visitor within a year. They are grievously in need of men. The new mission in Australia is crying out for more men. The English province had to refuse the offer of B(isho)p (Herbert)Vaughan, for a foundation at Manchester. Hill is glad Our Lady's "Expectation" is Hill's birthday. Father (Thomas J.) Jenkins has written characteristically. Their revolution was quite bad. Sixteen hundred were killed and wounded in the streets. All danger of a revival is not yet over. When Bishop Vaughan asked their English provincial for the Manchester foundation he particularly mentioned Fidelis and Hill.

McHugh, Father B(ernard J.): Brooklyn, N(ew) Y(ork)
to H(enry) F. Brownson: (Detroit, Michigan)

He thanks Brownson for his letter. He shall look forward to the appearance of Leo Taxil's (Gabriel Jogand) "Life of Joan D'Arc". It seems to him that at no time since the Reformation has the world been more open to conviction. The fact of a dominant belief in the supernatural in such characters as Columbus and Joan D'Arc must carry a great influence in turning men's minds to the true Faith.

1890 Nov. 14
Brearley, W. H.: Detroit, (Michigan)
to (Henry F.) Brownson: (Detroit, Michigan)

Brearley notices Brownson's interview with astonishment, for if he was sincere, he has been shamefully imposed on by some one. Brearley has taken these higher degrees, is a 32nd degree mason and a Knight Templar, and he assures Brownson that he is not only in the wrong but that masonry emphatically and repeatedly affirms instead of denies the existence of God and its teachings are essentially Christian. In France there has been a slight departure from this rule, and the masonry of the rest of the world has therefore withdrawn from that of France on that account Brownson's own good reputation is such that Brearley thinks he would want to correct his error.

1890 Nov.16
Harper, Elizabeth: Brooklyn, (New York)
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Harper registered a copy of a manuscript about the life and work of F(athe)r (Joseph) Damien (DeVeuster, SS.CC.). The original was written by (Ira B.) Brother Joseph Dutton. If Hudson approves she would ask that W. P. Lyon of Madison, Wisconsin read it and also that Hudson show it to Dr. (John B.) Berteling. The copy for the Picpus Fathers is not to be sent to them until Harper receives orders from Molokai. It was to F(athe)r (Francis X.) Dutton that Harper registered the copy. (Amy C.) Fowler is entirely out of the leprosy business, has cast aside her Dominican costumes and resumed her own name. The Board of Health called Mother Marianne (O.S.F.) to Honolulu to confer with her on the Kalihi Station. Harper encloses $5 for masses for her brother W(illia)m (Harper). 1890 Nov.18
Mannix, Mary E.: San Diego, Calif(ornia)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Mannix is sorry about the Golden Jubilee article, which she has sent to the Catholic World. Hudson must have forgotten what he wrote in reply to her question as to what space he could give her. The sisters wanted the article to appear in the Ave Maria, but when they heard Hudson could give them only four pages they requested Mannix to send them to the Catholic World. Mannix presumes that religious women are very unreasonable. There is nothing the matter with Mannix but anxiety as to the future and solicitude as to how she will meet everyday expenses. Formerly all that her husband touched prospered. Now it appears to be just the contrary. She wishes there were more writers like Christian Reid. Mr. Egan's tribute to (John) Boyle O'Reilly was very good. O'Reilly was a wonderful, many-sided man. Mannix is always glad to meet Cha(rle)s W(arren) Stoddard in the Ave Maria. (Father) John Talbot Smith has talent but he is unpolished and not devoid of conceit. Has it ever occurred to Hudson in view of the "Americani sm" that is creeping into high places that there may be a schism or secession in the Church in the United States? Dr. Richard Lalor Burtsell has gone to Rondout at last. F(athe)r (Thomas J.) Ducey has been making himself prominent in an unenviable way. One of Dr. Burtsell's nieces is a friend of Mannix. She deplores his action with regard to Father (Edward) McGlynn. Burtsell knows McGlynn to have been wrong in many respects and to have been wronged in others.

Seton, W(illiam): Tours, (France)
to Monsignor Robert (Seton: Jersey City Heights, New Jersey)

Sally and W(illiam) have been expecting a letter from Robert for over a week. W(illiam) had a letter from Annie (Foster Seton) saying that Robert was having something done to the graves at the Mt. W(illiam) must pay half. There were great church ceremonies last week; the Archbishop's golden jubilee and the completion of a new altar in St. Martin Church. It continues dull and rainy; their wood fire reminds W(illiam) of Carleton (Bayley?)'s wood fires at Uplands. They go to Paris for a week or so tomorrow to do some shopping. He hopes his paper on language will soon appear in the C(atholic) W(orld). Did the panic in stocks hurt (Louis) Sands? W(illiam) hears that Aunt Kate (Mother Catharine Seton) is very weak. Tom and Bel never write.

S(toddard), C(harles) W(arren): Washington, D(istrict of) C(olumbia)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Had Stoddard not met the Ave Maria in Rome ages ago he would never have written to Hudson. Had he not written Stoddard would never have gone to Notre Dame. Had he not gone to Notre Dame Hudson would never have talked to Bishop (John Joseph) Keane, Stoddard would not have been ill and gone to Kentucky to be rescued by the Theodore Vails and taken to Rome where the Bishop asked Stoddard to join his forces. Stoddard does not think Fay Adams has anything of his. Hudson had frightened Stoddard out of sending the Legend of Lanai. What was the trouble at Notre Dame? Did Hudson care for any of those who were sent away? (Theodore) Dwight is there. Now that Henry Adams is away he finds the house too lonely.

Returning home, after Sorin escorted him to the train, Shea thanks Sorin for the condescension and favor during Shea's stay at Notre Dame. Shea was not prepared for what he actually beheld at Notre Dame. Sorin's work has produced institutions which are unequalled. The good that Notre Dame is doing has not been fully appreciated. Shea regrets that Providence had not guided him to Sorin's to labor under him.

Shea, John Gilmary: Elizabeth, N(ew) J(ersey)
to J(ames) F. Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The wonderful collection of institutions, their careful keeping up with the wants of the country and the times, no less than the welcome extended to him by everyone from Father General (Edward Sorin) to the brothers, was enough to unsettle a stronger brain than Shea's. They keep bringing up their impressions. Edwards' zeal as a collector has been rewarded by great results. Shea recognizes more thoroughly what Edwards has done. Shea wants Edwards to prepare an article for U. S. Catholic Magazine on the neglect which has swept away so much.

Shea, John Gilmary: Elizabeth, N(ew) J(ersey)
to J(ames) F. Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

He has not been well since his delightful visit to Notre Dame. Edwards' zeal as a collector has been rewarded by great results, yet he hopes that this is only a beginning. In a few days Shea will draw up the circular for his consideration. He asks Edwards if he can prepare an article for the U.S. Catholic Magazine on the condition of the archives of the Catholic Church in this country and the neglect which has swept away so much. The solemn duty on all to preserve what is left will then appear. He cannot adequately express his gratitude to Edwards for the kindness he has shown him.

He will not ask Ford to keep his offer of the (New York Freeman's Journal) open on the terms proposed which are too high for him to consider in his present state of affairs. He is sure he could make the paper pay and would like to try it. In that case he would sell out and go East. The paper must be offered to him as a bargain or he cannot entertain the hope of owning it.
