Guichainville, Metayer de:
New York, (New York)
to Henry F. Brownson:
Detroit, Michigan
Guichainville makes several requests of Brownson. First, his son has obtained authentic notes of the famous Banque Royale (Louis XV 1720) of Law which he would like to sell. He asks Brownson's help. Also the Monastery of Paray-le-Monial has entrusted him with several hundred crosses which they would like to sell at $7 per hundred. He has not heard anything about their Columbus document. He would like to write to Mr. Curtiss about it, but does not know quite how to state his case. P.S. The Reverend Father (Ignatius) Horstman has made no reply to his paper 'Mission Catholiques' (S. Am.) Guichainville must seek elsewhere for placement.

MacDonnell, Sister M(ary) Magdalene:
(Lisbon, Portugal)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
The Ave Maria is considered bigoted and fanatical by the enlightened Portuguese of the 19th century! Religion and morality are in a terrible state in Portugal. Bankruptcy is imminent and revolution very probable. Freemasons and Jews rule Portugal. They got their prizes this year from the catalog Hudson sent last year. Sister wishes there were some cheap and good Catholic literature. Cardinal (Cajetan) Masella sent her a pamphlet on the life of Nunzio Sulprizio, which he is anxious to have translated. Their Vicar Father Hickey and the French Father want B(lessed) Bernard declared Venerable. Sister does not know how he can believe such vague accounts.

The three remaining sisters were brought back to New Orleans and placed in the care of the Sisters of Notre Dame. They are now in the Order of School Sisters of Notre Dame. This year the sisters were reunited by the kindness of their kind Reverend Mother.

Field regrets that it has been impossible to get his backers sufficiently interested in Brownson's translation to take it up on a 200,000 copy basis. Nothing short of that would justify the forming of a company. They also object to the shape of the plates and want royal octavo and many engravings—to appeal to the great majority of the ignorant. Field could wait no longer on them and accepted the position of collection manager of the Butchers' Supply Company. He is sorry his scheme failed.

Guichainville thanks Brownson for his letter dated the 13, and for the information contained therein. He knows the person mentioned, but doubts that he is In a financial situation to by his autograph. The difficulty is that the mysterious origin of this document makes one afraid to become the owner. That is probably what Mr. Curtis fears. A friend from England advised him that the government. there would take possession of such a document. He thanks Brownson for having placed some of the crosses. He realizes that the American Clergy's appreciation for such souvenirs is not great...the dollar being the most authentic relic. In America you have business men; in France it is all different. Religion is like the climates; it is modified under the different zones where it is practiced. Guichainville has remained Norman French in spite of his ten years in this Babylon of Yanteism.

to H(enry) F. Brownson:
Detroit, Mich(igan)
Curtis could not answer Brownson's letter of August 8 sooner because he was out of the city, and will write to Brownson's friend who has the Columbus picture at once. His purpose in securing photographs of the pictures at the University of Notre Dame was to have them enlarged by bromide or carbon process to a size sufficient to hang them upon the walls of the Columbus Building at the Exposition. They would not be republished in a book so far as he could control them, and their exhibition would promote the sale of Brownson's Life of Columbus.

Guichainville, le Metayer de:
New York, N. Y.
to Henry F. Brownson:
Detroit, Michigan
Guichainville informs Brownson that he has received a very courteous letter from W. E. Curtis through Brownson's intervention. He has written to Mr. Curtis and Mr. Curtis wishes to know what procedure should be followed in the business of the autograph concerning the World's Fair in Chicago. If the matter in consideration materializes, he deems it necessary to save him a right in the matter since he owes it all to him. This is said in case they are successful and that one is desirous of possessing the precious autograph. He tells Brownson that he will keep in touch with Mr. Curtis and that he will continue his investigations.
