Wilber, C. K.:
Chicago, (Illinois)
to Father T(homas) E. Walsh, (C.S.C.):
Notre Dame, Ind(iana)
An unusual number of tickets at Clergy rate have been sold by their agent at South Bend during August. A sample of the applications honored he encloses. It is not within their rule to extend the courtesy to members of Walsh's congregation. They have permitted the privilege to Brothers but find that the term is very comprehensive. He must extend the privilege to clergymen only.

Gibbons, Cardinal J(ames):
Baltimore, (Maryland)
to Archbishop (Michael Augustine) Corrigan:
New York, (New York)
As the Columbus civic celebration will be held in nearly all the Metropolitan Sees on Oct. 21, and the archbishops could not reach home in time after attending the meeting in New York appointed for Oct. 19, it has been suggested that their meeting be postponed. Gibbons asks that the meeting be deferred until Nov. 16. He hopes this day will be acceptable to Corrigan. P.S. Gibbons has just received a cablegram from Rome permitting the religious feature of the Columbian celebration on Oct. 21.

Gibbons, Cardinal J(ames):
Baltimore, (Maryland)
to Archbishop (Michael Augustine) Corrigan:
(New York, New York)
Corrigan's letter was received in which he asks if it is desirable to call to the attention of the Holy See the exaggerated and unjustifiable statements as to the loss of the Church of foreign-born Catholics, etc. Gibbons feels such a letter should be sent because the charge is as grave as it is unwarranted. Corrigan should draft the letter to be submitted to the approval of the Archbishops. Gibbon sends a copy of the letter to the Archbishops postponing the meeting. Since writing to Corrigan, Gibbons has had additional requests for the postponement.

Chatard, Bishop F(rancis) S(ilas):
Indianapolis, Ind(iana)
to Archbishop (Michael Augustine) Corrigan:
New York, (New York)
Chatard received Corrigan's letter this morning. He took no notes of the discussions, but reports from memory. In regard to children not attending Catholic schools, it was felt the clergy were doing as much for them as possible. It was resolved that the parish priest give them special instruction in Catechism on Saturday. With regard to the K(nights) of P(ythias) there was a diversity of opinion. There was a request that it be settled whether being in the Confessional five hours exempt a priest from his Office. A committee was appointed to draft a letter to the Holy Father on his Episcopal Jubilee. The school question caused a strong comparison of views. Chatard felt that the matter of the children frequenting public schools was brought in to bolster up the Faribault plan. He feels the catechism could be taught more thoroughly. Bishop (William George) McCloskey is in French Lick, (Indiana) and is in good health. Chatard sees that Msgr. (Francis) Satolli, accompanied by Msgr. (Denis J.) O'Connell, is coming to America as Apostolic Delegate. Chatard is not surprised, for suspicion must have arisen that certain information given the Holy See was not exact, but very partisan. O'Connell, being devoted to one side, will not be likely to represent the views of parties opposed to those of his own. Satolli is a clever and good man but with the strongest kind of bias. Under the circumstances, it will be remarkable if Satolli gets an adequate view of their state of things. Chatard reads with much interest the cholera bulletins. It is reported that an emigrant from Liverpool, from Germany, died yesterday in Chicago with symptoms of cholera. The cause it is said was not cholera.

The present Review is of such little worth and is declining so rapidly that if Brownson did nothing but reproduce in his own words his father's principles in theology, philosophy, politics, ethics and literature he would do untold good.

W(illiam) was glad to read about Father (Evariste Regis) Huc; his name awakens memories. The invitation to Monsignor (Bernard) O'Reilly's Thanksgiving Mass arrived yesterday. W(illiam) was in his rhetoric class at St. John's 42 years ago. It is hard to believe it is 30 years since Antietam and 36 since W(illiam) sailed on the Arago for Rock River. Last evening Sally gave a small party; they invited Mrs. DeLafontaine's family. T(h)om(as) Jevons, Rex (Reginald Jevons) and (Thomas) Seton (Jevons) returned from the Pyrenees. They went into Lafond's bookstore in their old street in Pau; Mrs. Lafond is now quite aged. Their mother's (Emily Prime Seton grave is in good order. This afternoon they all go together to LaRoche Carbon; Ferdy (Ferdinand Talbot Roscoe Jevons) will photograph the cave and the tower. In a few days Isabel (Seton Jevons) and her family will leave for England. W(illiam) and Sally hope to see Robert by Christmas. Th(om)as Lee is now home.

Seton, W(illiam):

to Monsignor Robert (Seton:

They are still in Tours and Isabel (Seton Jevons) and family still with them. Today (Thomas) Seton (Jevons) and Rex (Reginald Jevons) return to England to begin work again. It is likely that when Isabel and T(h)om(as) Jevons go they will leave Ferd(inand Talbot Roscoe Jevons) and Daisy (Marguerite Jevons) for another month to improve their French. Annie (Foster Seton) has been very unwise in her training. W(illiam) cannot imagine why Willie (Seton) was taken away first from the "Mt." and then from Georgetown. Might not Jack (John Foster Seton) and Willie better have gone to a good public school in Omaha or Spokan? W(illiam) has been most unwise in life; when he first went to Illinois he should have turned his mind to natural science and he might have kept his $10,000 safely invested instead of buying a farm. But how few are wise at 21! A few days ago, they all went up the Loire to visit some caves. He dug two shells out of the sandstone which he will give to Professor Sanderson Smith of the Natural History Museum of New York.

to A(ustin) E. Ford:
(New York, New York)
He regrets to have learned that Ford is sick. Ford will have seen Father (Thomas) O'Gorman and obtained from him the full status of the question as it stands today. Ford's report of his interview with Archbishop (Michael A. Corrigan) was interesting reading, but painful in a way; it was all a piece of acting and utterly false, if not in intention, certainly in fact. The information will be useful to Ireland when he goes to New York. The coming of the Delegate (Archbishop Francis Satolli) suits Ireland thoroughly. He has long been aware of the Pope's intention in this regard and has acquiesced in it. Monsignor (Denis J.) O'Connell who accompanies the delegate will confide completely in Ford. Ford must be sure to see him. O'Gorman will be in New York to welcome the delegate in Ireland's name; Ford should arrange through him for an interview with O'Connell. Ireland discusses the policy the delegate will follow in America.
