Conway, Katherine E.:
Boston, Mass(achusetts)
to William J. Onahan:
Chicago, Illinois
Miss Conway is glad that Onahan is interested in the representation of Massachusetts in the (Columbian) Catholic Congress, since she has heard that there is a disposition to crowd New England out. (John) Boyle O'Reilly didn't receive an invitation to prepare a paper for the Catholic Congress (1889?) in time so he declined. He never did express much partiality toward the Congress. He was not asked to sign the Call, though less prominent Bostonians were. Miss Conway hopes Onahan reads an article on "Catholics and Women's Day" in the current "Pilot". She has furnished papers for the Religious Press Congress as well as the Women's Press Congress. She has seen no clippings from (Margaret) "Mollie" (Onahan). Mrs. Bowen, Archbishop Ryan's sister, sent her some papers.

Lofton is the secretary to the Colored Congress. He will report any arrangements to Spencer, the President of the Colored Congress.

Seton, W(illiam):
Paris, (France)
to Monsignor Robert (Seton:
Jersey City Heights, New Jersey)
Sally feels the death of Dr. (Charles Carroll Lee very much. Robert's account of the Sailors' Review was very good. It is curious to see how little even the educated French know of other countries. W(illiam) is reading "Lamennais" by Abbé Roussel and has no doubt that he was a victim of incanity. Dr. Channing would agree. Yesterday they lunched at the Hotel Lafontaine, once the home of the fable writer, with Mrs. George Parrish and daughter. His friend, Father (Auguste) Leroy, O.P., is recovering from a severe illness; he is about 80. They return in September or October. He has a letter from Seton Jevons.

Williams, Mary A(nne):
Melbourne, Australia
to (Monsignor Robert Seton:

It was a great satisfaction to receive (Seton)'s letter, dated January 10. She will enclose a letter (no enclosure) printed in their paper at Bacchus Marsh from (Reverend Montague) Williams to one of his lady parishioners who sent it to the editor so the village people would hear what he has been doing as he is popular with his neighbors. Williams is now in London; in his last letter he described the Grand Annual banquet given by the Free Masons. Williams talks of going to Paris, Antwerp, and Brussels, then to see their relatives in Ireland. He may return via America. Her two sons are quite well. She spent a month with Walter Williams and his wife at Meryula. Her youngest son Seton(G. Williams) is very fond of hunting and keeps three horses.

The C(atholic) T(ruth) S(ociety) will not be able to hold a convention, since none have the time to devote to preliminary arrangements. If they can not acquire a man of national reputation to read a paper on the Society, Markoe suggests himself. Father F. G. Lentz, the founder of a similar Society of women, has written him, but Markoe referred him to Onahan. Markoe will try to enclose a copy of indulgences granted the C.T.S. P.S. Jun 14. The rebels tried to raid the track and O'Neil was thrown into the ditch and hurt his back and breast. He asks if Edwards remembers meeting him and Colonel Tester(?) the day he was behind his regiment because of being crippled by the fall. He has asked Lieutenant Kirk for a furlough. Kirk said the only way was to take a French furlough and go home and when he got well to come back. He was never able to come back and is a cripple now. The story of the battle of the Bishops in the Chicago Post might have had a little truth, but was greatly exaggerated. (Father James) Nilan was in Chicago that week attending a Temperance Congress. Ryan, Archbishop P(atrick) J(ohn):
Philadelphia, (Pennsylvania)
to Archbishop (Michael Augustine Corrigan:
New York, New York)
Ryan supposes the Sisters of Mt. St. Vincent have informed Corrigan of their visit to Overbrook. Some business required that Msgr. (Francis) Satolli return to Washington and he left immediately after dinner. On his way to the railroad station he spoke to the Sisters. When he heard that the half crazy Sister was waiting, he left with great rapidity. Satolli left the whole matter to Corrigan. Ryan spoke of the reported restoration of Father (Richard L.) Burtsell, but Satolli said he wrote to Corrigan and suggested that Corrigan offer Burtsell a vacant city parish if one became open. He does not seem disposed to go further. Satolli intends to do what is just, but his first impressions were all produced by one party. His praise of parochial schools was evidence of his becoming conscious of another side. Ryan has received from Cardinal Gibbons power of attorney to sell the "City Sixes." Ryan hopes the Roman letter will arrive soon and close in the right way the School Controversy.

Ford's name was proposed for a degree at the faculty meeting. There was no objection, but it was decided not to consider the names of prominent people until the Jubilee Year (1895); no LL.D. will be given at the coming commencement. They expected a visit from Ford's aunt (Ellen A. Ford) and were disappointed.

(New York, New York)
The letter of the Holy Father on the school question has reached Gibbons. It is a lengthy document of six pages. As directed by the Pope, Gibbons will send copies to all the Episcopate of the United States. He hopes to be able to do so by the end of the week. He has delayed taking further action in regard to the house for the Delegate. All but one have replied and only one has declined to sign. Archbishop (William Henry) Elder suggested a change in the form of the letter and Archbishop (Patrick A.) Feehan requested Gibbons to delay action until September.

Semple completed his paper which he encloses. He did not think originality was permissible, so he leaned upon the Pope's Encyclical. Enclosed is a slip on an inheritance tax in the interest of the poor, which he thought of adding. However, this was struck out by his son, (Father) H.C. Semple, S.J., to whom he had submitted it for criticism. If the committee approves, he would like to have it inserted. He hopes they shall understand the difficulty of confining to exact limits. If the paper is accepted he asks if he will read it to the Congress, the date for the reading, and arrangements for publication.

The question of delegates from the Archdiocese of St. Louis depends upon the settling of the matter of the co-adjutorship. If Spaunhorst were requested by Onahan officially to designate somebody, he might secure some information. The results of Bishop (John J.) Kain's appointment are speculative. Archbishop (Peter Richard) Kenrich remains quiet, though it is said he approves the appointment. Spaunhorst has a letter from Bishop Kain, who shall be in St. Louis within the month. The entire coadjutor problem is very peculiar, as was the case of the association for the building of a new cathedral. He tells of the dispute between the association and the Archbishop. Onahan is to treat the letter confidentially.

She has not heard from Onahan for some time, nor received the matter for publication concerning the Congress which she hoped for the "Pilot". She thinks perhaps that Onahan is offended at what she wrote on (John) Boyle O'Reilly and the Congress, but he shouldn't be. They should be united for the common good of the faith, even though they may differ somewhat on methods. She had a talk with Bishop Keane, who shall also give a paper. She would like to have the list of speakers for the "Pilot". She shall attend the Congress unless something happens. She deplores a "Woman's Day"; Elizabeth Cronyn feels as she does. She has had no communication with others. She must stand on her convictions and those of her paper. She hopes that her frank expression will not disturb their mutual good-will.
