Corrigan, Father Patrick: Hoboken, N(ew) J(ersey)

Though the concluding volume of John Gilmary Shea's History contains the names of all who gave him financial aid in the publication of the third and fourth volumes, Corrigan sends a list of the names and amounts given. It was Shea's intention to write a fifth volume, but his death made the fourth one his last. This volume appeared without a preface. Shea left it as his dying request that Corrigan should write the preface and dedicate the work to Corrigan and all those who had contributed to the fund. In the fall of 1889, in view of Shea's health and years, Corrigan urged him to resume his historical work. Corrigan promised to secure the $9,000 necessary to complete the projected final three volumes. Corrigan addressed every priest in the United States twice, all Bishops and Archbishops once, except the Cardinal and Archbishop (John) Ireland, whom he reserved for the fifth volume. Shea was then editor of the "New York Catholic News" and the proprietor requested that Shea not give up his post. The owner of the paper promised that he and his friends would see that the fund would not suffer, but no contribution is mentioned in the list from that source. Corrigan gave Shea $6000 of which $2,095 was Corrigan's own contribution to the fund. A list of subscribers and amounts contributed (is given).

(1893) (Jul. )
E(gan), M(aurice) F(rancis): (Notre Dame, Indiana)
 to W(illiam) J. O(nahan): (Chicago, Illinois)

Egan has finished his paper which he hopes to read himself. Donahoe wants the m(anu)s(cript) by Aug(ust) 5, in time for the September number. Onahan is asked to glance at it. The paper aims only to be practical and to touch only the glaring needs of most colleges. Egan has cut the paper to one-half hour. It should be understood, and not tire anybody. Mollie's picture appears in the C(atholic) W(orld?). Those distinguished women certainly needed her face to brighten their group. But she will never be as beautiful as her mother.

(1893 Jul.)
Gans, Edgar H( ): Baltimore, M(arylan)d
to W(illia)m J. Onahan: (Chicago, Illinois)

Due to pressing work, Gans was unable to give attention to his essay for the Columbian Catholic Congress until recently. He felt at loss as to its scope, and after attempting to see Cardinal (James) Gibbons and conferring with the latter's friend, F(athe)r Tho(ma)s Broydrick, Gans has decided to change the subject from "The Influence of the Catholic Church on …….." to "The Relation of the Catholic Church to the social, civil and political institutions of the United States." What is the latest date set for completion of a paper? He will show it to the Cardinal or Father Broydrick before sending it.

S(toddard), C(harles) W(arren): B(roo)klyn, (New York)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The place is beastly and wreaking (!) with Jews. Stoddard hopes to be with Theo(dore) F. Dwight by Sunday. He will go to the White Mountains for awhile to be with Davis Vail. Chicago is out of the question unless he can get there in September.

Campbell, W( ) A.: Richmond, V(irgini)a
to W(illiam) J. Onahan: Chicago, Illinois

Enclosed is a notice of the proposed conference in Chicago with reference to the petition in behalf of arbitration. Campbell hopes Onahan will attend. Did the petition meet with the Archbishop's favor? Campbell desires to secure the influence of the (Catholic) Church, as well as prominent men in behalf of this movement. He sends the petition as prepared for signature, addressed to the heads of 31 governments in their respective languages. (No enclosure.)

Cantwell, E( ) W.: Chicago, Ill(inois)
to W(illiam) J. Onahan: (Chicago, Illinois)

The enclosed design of badge is what Cantwell wishes to sell to the (Columbian) Catholic Congress delegates. It is submitted for criticism — the busts are those of the Pope, Archbishops Freehan and Ireland, but others may be substituted. He explains that this is only a rough sketch. He would like to call on Onahan.

McGolrick, James, Bishop of: Duluth, Minn(esota)
to (William J.) Onahan: (Chicago, Illinois)

The Bishop shall do his best on "The Indian Question". He could use any information, especially that of the Indian Bureau. The A(merican) P(rotective) A(ssociation) is raging, especially because of the fall of a priest there. Bad Catholics and bad priests are a thousand times worse than any secret associations. An active Catholic Press Union would be of more value than the building of many churches. He praises Mollie (Onahan).

Dwight, Thomas: Nahant, Mass(achusetts)
to W(illia)m J. Onahan: (Chicago, Illinois)

Ring, Thomas F.: Boston, Mass(achusetts)
to W(illiam) J. Onahan: (Chicago, Illinois)

Ring had accepted the invitation to prepare a paper to be read at the (Columbian) Catholic Congress on "Public and Private Charities". Time has passed so quickly that he is unable to submit it on time. He will submit it in one or two weeks, if the committee will receive it late.

(18)93 Jul. 3
R(yan), P(atrick) J(ohn),Archbishop of: Phila(delphia), (Pennsylvania)
to (William J.) Onahan: (Chicago, Illinois)

Walter George Smith would feel honored by an invitation to prepare a paper to be read at the (Columbian) Catholic Congress. He is a son of Gen(era)l Kilby Smith and married Miss ( ) Drexel. Egan wrote that Onahan had told him the Archbishop's opinion of the Fr. Lavelle letter. The Archbishop replied that the copying of the extract against Lavelle's (?) will was a breach of confidence. He doesn't know who the copyist was, but has reason to fear it was "one of the cloth."

(18)93 Jul.3
Seton, W(illiam): Paris, (France)
to Monsignor Robert (Seton: Jersey City Heights, New Jersey)

W(illiam) received (Seton)'s letter of June 23 telling of his trip to Notre Dame. He will be on his guard against the person Robert mentioned. He called on Pere ( ) Chocargne; although not over 65 he is much broken. Pere (Auguste) Leroy, O.P. is over his illness; he is verging on 75. He saw President (Marie Francois Sodi) Carnot and wife at the station the other day, but few people touched their hats. They will go next week to Tours. There is some cholera in the Pyrenees at present. They liked (Seton)'s notice of Dr. (Guy Carleton) Lee in the Freeman.

Thiele, (Father) A ( ) J.: (Chicago, Illinois)
to W(illia)m J. Onahan: (Chicago, Illinois)

There will be two meetings of the German Cath(olic) Y(oung) M(en's) Societies on September 5th; two on September 6th, in the smaller hall. On the evening of September 6th, they would like to have one of the larger halls for a mass meeting. He has pledged his honor that all will be in readiness, and he holds Onahan's pledge so there will be no disappointment. He thanks Onahan in the name of the Supreme President of the League, Father Bernard of Pittsburgh.

1893 July 4
Guichainville, Metayer de: New York, (New York)
to (Henry F.) Brownson: (Detroit, Michigan)

This day, the 118th anniversary of Independence, and his independence at home, gives Guichainville the occasion to write. He thanks Brownson for his philatelic generosity, and promises to publicize the book of Columbus of Tarducci in the most aristocratic centers of Europe. On the contrary he is in touch with all corners of the world with people who in many cases are better off financially than himself, and who can find a place for this Tarducci. Raoul offers Brownson another note of Law which like good Capuchins always come by twos. R.R. Boggert of New York has given publicity in Chicago to some 80 photographs. He has asked if Guichainville would like an historical record and sell the original. Both of these he declined, having too many things in mind and too much work to do. Guichainville promises Brownson some prospective addresses in Normandy for his Cabot books when they are completed. He is still busy with the Club catalogue. Guichainville thanks Brownson for the invitation to his home. He will accept this when the Gods are more favorable to him. Then they can study the breezes of the fair Lake. He pays his respects to Brownson. Raoul thanks him for future philatelic donations.

Adam, Father J(oachim): Arrowhead Springs, Cal(ifornia)
to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Adam was in Chicago to see the World's Fair from May 25 to June 18. He intended seeing Hudson but friends insisted on his going back with them. For many years Adam has been a perfect blank for the readers of the Ave Maria. Many reasons have prevented him from writing. He thought he would try to write a few notes on the Yosemite Valley.

1893 July 7
Ascension, Mother M.: Notre Dame, Indiana
 to J(ames) F. Edwards:

She has not heard anything since Mgr. (Francesco) Satolli's visit but things have assumed a menacing appearance. The Sisters at Notre Dame learned that they were to be cut off from St. Mary's, the habit changed, that they were to don a sort of secular uniform and be as servant girls working in the College. A committee was appointed to oppose such underhand design binding them against their will. Mother General of the (Sisters of Holy Cross) was greatly incensed against the administration. Mother Ascension always said they could not get along this way. It is an awful affair. If Satolli fails it will go hard with some of them. She does not know Archbishop (Patrick W.) Riordan (of San Francisco, California) well enough to appeal to him.

1893 Jul. 7
(Conway,) K(atherine) E.: Boston, (Massachusetts)
to William J. Onahan: Chicago, Illinois

Miss Conway deplores a "Women's Day" and the distinction between men and women in the intellectual order. Eliza Allen Starr or Miss E(leanor) C. Donnelly could have written good papers on general topics. She asks that her name be taken off the programme. This has to be done for the sake of consistancy. She has always been against discrimination of women in the intellectual field, and cannot associate herself with a programme which does not give woman her full due. She wonders if Miss Starr started this "Woman's Day" business. George Parsons Lathrop agrees with her, as does her editor, Mr. (James Jeffrey) Roche, and Elizabeth Cronyn, as Onahan can see in regard to the latter by the enclosure. She refutes Onahan's argument for the necessity of keeping a natural sequence among the subjects of the programme, showing that it can be changed to admit women with men quite feasibly. She dined last evening with Cardinal James Gibbons at Mr. Harson's house. Upon saying farewell, the Cardinal had reminded her to be consistent, which she applies to the present case. Has Onahan any Boston men among the speakers? She shall follow his advice about names until she hears further. Regards to Mrs. Onahan and Mollie. (No enclosure.)

Mosher, Warren E.: Youngstown, Ohio
to William J. Onahan: Chicago, Illinois

Mosher sends his paper on "Young Men's Societies." He feels that his paper might not be lofty enough, saying that he would rather do practical work than write essays about what good could be done. He hopes his paper will be put on the program of the (Columbian Catholic) Congress.

Sheridan, Frank J.: Chicago, Illinois
to W(illiam) J. Onahan: (Chicago, Illinois)

Enclosed is an official communication on the subject of the convention. In the organization proposed, the fewer laws the better. He had to attend to official duties, and show his family the World's Fair, or he would have given reasons and authorities at greater length. If Onahan thinks it advisable, he shall submit his plan to Bishop (John Hennessy) or M(onsi)g(no)r Francis Satoli. Their approval would strengthen the project before the Congress. He shall go to Cleveland on duty for a month. He was unable to call on Onahan before leaving.

E(dwards), J(ames) F.: Chicago, (Illinois)
to Father (Thomas E.) Walsh, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

He hopes Walsh is improving in health since his visit to Waukesha. Edwards had to make a catalogue of their exhibit for the official record of the World's Fair. Their display seems to attract the attention of the public. He learns that Mother Augusta is spreading a bad spirit among the sisters to the effect that they are serving girls to a lot of priests and brothers. Edwards is sorry that Walsh is not in good condition to lay her out. Gregori painted a portrait of (William J.) Onahan, our first Catholic layman as Archbishop Ireland calls him.

He would like to have its object placed before the Catholic Congresses. Can Onahan make an opening for this work? Father Lentz would like to distribute some leaflets and have some one, or himself, speak before the Congress. The devotion has received approval from Rome. Father does not advise her to write to Archbishop Riordan or Mgr. (Francesco) Satolli. The latter will no doubt bring the matter through. The interference and opposition of M(other) A(ugusta) (of the Sisters of Holy Cross) may cause great delay. Miss Conway's editorial in "The Pilot" is justified, concerned as it is, with topics rather than absolute order of programme. The next week shall see the subject taken up again. She is very pleased with the new arrangement. She shall mail her paper tomorrow, which she shall call "The Social Apostolate". She noticed some changes, according to the C(atholic) Review. She hopes her paper will not be on the same day as that of "Woman in Her Own Field" as they might run over similar ground. (James J.) Roche has been ill. Regards to Mrs. Onahan and Mollie.

Ryan, Archbishop P(atrick) J(ohn): Philadelphia, (Pennsylvania)
to Archbishop (Michael Augustine Corrigan: New York, New York)

Ryan's attention has been called to the republication of an article in the "Catholic Times" of Philadelphia of the impudent article in the "Western Watchman" about (Corrigan). The "Times" was established without Ryan's sanction and he is not responsible for its action. Some one has been sending Ryan the paper. Publication of Msgr. (Francis) Satolli's letter to (Corrigan) was opportune. When thoroughly convinced of what is right, Satolli is unyielding and impartial. On his first visit, Satolli spoke of (Corrigan) in laudatory terms, but the change came in the interim. Ryan believes Satolli will get right after he overcomes those short spells of nervous passion which it seems he cannot control. Satolli has more in common with (Corrigan) than one would think. Should the "Catholic Times" continue attacks on (Corrigan), Ryan will denounce it publicly.

Ryan, Archbishop P(atrick) J(ohn): Philadelphia, (Pennsylvania)
to Archbishop (Michael Augustine Corrigan: New York, New York)

Ryan acknowledges receipt of five bonds of $1,000 each for (Corrigan)'s burse in the American college in Rome. It will be necessary to know how the coupons are to be cashed. The Pope's letter was more than Ryan expected and a triumph for Catholic education. More would have been obtained but for the unfortunate close of their New York meeting. Ryan mentioned to Msgr. (Francis) Satolli the impression that Archbishop (John) Ireland desired to "Fairbault" all our schools and Satolli was strongly opposed. He asked when Corrigan's Seminary would be completed and he seems softened somewhat. That unfortunate letter from Father (Michael) Lavelle to (Maurice F.) Egan and its publication by Ireland did more harm than anything else. Egan says he protested against publication. Doesn't (Corrigan) think a semi-official reply should be made to Father (Richard E.) Burtsell's history of the Father (Edward) McGlynn affair? Such a statement might do good.

 to W(illia)m J. Onahan: Chicago, Ill(inois)

Markoe encloses two copies of his paper on the C(atholic) T(ruth) S(ociety). The paper is within the allotted time limit, since he is leaving out additional matter and statistics. Mr. Cole wonders if there would be objections to the passing out, gratis, of 1000 to 2000 copies of the Encyclical on Labor with the Society's "Information Pamphlet" attached. If the Sistine Chapel Choir is coming to Chicago, as Markoe has heard, could they not sing the opening Mass of the (Columbian Catholic) Congress?

Seton, Father Rob(ert): Jersey City, (New Jersey)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Seton just read the notice of the death of Father (Alexis) Granger, (C.S.C.) following Father (Thomas E.) Walsh's. This week's "Catholic Times" contains Bishop Spalding's eulogy of the president. Seton wishes he could have a spiritual conference with Hudson. The last day of the week, with the interior accusation of how little has been done, is a dreadful reminder of the fast approaching end.

to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Tomorrow Spalding leaves for Hot Springs, Virginia. He asks Hudson to send the proof of the other article "Professional Education". He just read in the New World an atrocious report of his sermon at the funeral of Father (Thomas E.) Walsh, (C.S.C.). Nothing but profanity would do justice to the ass who sent it or the editor who published it. Spalding expects to see (Maurice Francis) Egan tonight and will talk things over with him.

to (William J.) Onahan: (Chicago, Illinois)

Father Hudson sends some proofs of the "Announcements" and asks if Onahan can use some copies of the "Ave Maria". The death of Father (Thomas) Walsh, (C.S.C.) is a great loss. Father Andrew Morrissey, (C.S.C.) was not Father Hudson's choice as a successor, though he admits that Father Morrissey may do a better job than some others. Another loss to Notre Dame is Father (Alexis) Granger, (C.S.C.), who was a good friend of Father Hudson.
