Scannell, Richard Bishop of: Omaha, Neb(raska)
to (William J.) Onahan: (Chicago, Illinois)

Scannell has just returned from a trip through Greeley County, Nebraska. He calls Onahan's attention to the unsatisfactory state of affairs in Spalding, (Nebraska). There is trouble in obtaining title to property outside a six block limit, for the Colonization Society. Because of this, efforts to extend a railroad have not succeeded. The new Church is on land to which it has no title. If, as Scannell understands, the Society always intended to deed the town site to the Bishop for the benefit of the Congregation, then Onahan should act, since delay is adding to hardship.

Guichainville, Metayer de: New York, (New York)
to (Henry F.) Brownson: (Detroit, Michigan)

Guichainville has received Brownson's package and the invoice which he is forwarding to the treasurer. He also received the circulars which he will hasten to send to his friends who are interested in Science and History. He has made two discoveries which will probably interest Brownson as well as Tarducci. Guichainville wonders if Tarducci is familiar with an illustrated book entitled Nova typis transacta navigatio, novi orbis Indiae occidentalis ad modum reverendissimorum by Le P. Honorius Philoponus, O.S.B., Order S. Ben Monacha 1621 Erat Christophorus Columbus Etc., and another book entitled "Introduction a la Geographic Etc.", by N. De Fers, Paris 1717. The map of the world is illustrated with nine insets with pictures of R.P. Cavilli (sic). De la Saile Francois, Campierre Anglois, Magellan Portuguais, Drac Anglois, Christophe Colomb Geneois, Amerique Vespuce Florenti, Marc Paul Venetien, Guillaume Schouteu Hollondais. Columbus is strangely represented in that group. These two books are in the Club's library. Guichainville pays his respects to Brownson.

Allen, Cha(rle)s Dexter: Hartford, Conn(ecticut)
to Monsignor Robert Seton: Jersey City Heights, (New Jersey)

He received Seton's letter of the 19th and is pleased at his interest in his work on the subject of early book plates. As to what Mr. Hardy says in regard to the date of their plates, Allen does not find the statement Seton quotes. The old Seton plate by Maverick was probably dated about 1790. Maverick had a shop in New York around 1787; he was then about 32. If Seton will send a print for a description he will include it in his book.

Seton, W(illiam): Paris, (France)
to (Monsignor) Robert (Seton: Jersey City Heights, New Jersey)

Sally and he went to Drexels and found (Seton)'s letter of October 13. He is glad (Seton) kept out of the (Archbishop Michael Augustine) Corrigan - (Archbishop Francis) Satolli imbroglio; it is vulgar. They had a charming summer at Tours. Paris is wild over the Russian naval officers. They dined last week at Mr. Palmer's in Versailles. Before sailing they will see de Greve Coeur and Madame (Helen Bailly) de Barberey. He has sent another manuscript to the C(atholic) W(orld). He is busy translating Professor Romanes' book for Father Leray, O.P. Marshal McMahon's funeral yesterday was very imposing; several Prussian and Italian officers walked in the procession and no unpleasantness. He had a letter from (Louis Joseph) Sands about his engagement. It seems but yesterday they were at Madame Busque's for buckwheats.

McQuaid, Bishop B(ernard) J(oseph): Rochester, N(ew) Y(ork)
to Archbishop (Michael Augustine Corrigan: New York, New York)

McQuaid received (Corrigan)'s letter, and also one from (Ella B.) Edes. She thought that Dr. F( ) was not as shrewd as (Corrigan) thought he was. In his last letter McQuaid alluded to Msgr. (Francis) Satolli's refusal to come to Rochester to assist at the dedication of St. Bernard's Seminary. McQuaid directed Father (Edward J.) Hanna to express the pain Satolli's accusations gave. When Satolli was at (Corrigan)'s house he wrote in quite a different strain. Last week Hanna received a letter from him and he said he would be in Rochester about Nov. 10. About that time the first candidate from the Seminary for priesthood would be ready and Satolli could confer the sacrament. McQuaid is not going to Buffalo. (Bishop Stephen Ryan)'s organ had a shameful attack on McQuaid a week after July 12, regarding the celebration. McQuaid holds Ryan responsible of his tool's work. (Father Richard E.) Burtsell slipped off to Rome. Protestants are now putting down Henry George's one tax theory, since Catholics, at dictation of Cardinal (James) Gibbons, declined to do so.

Allen, Cha(rle)s Dexter: Hartford, Conn(ecticut)
to Monsignor (Robert) Seton: (Jersey City Heights, New Jersey)

He is happy Seton liked the book plates he sent and thanks him for the ones Seton sent him. He will take Seton's suggestion to call upon Professor (James F.) Edwards. Allen is also a member of the S(ons of the) A(merican) R(evolution) and had three or four ancestors who were active in the defense of their country. His wife had twenty relatives on the Northern side in the Civil War. It seemed Allen had a Seton plate but the only thing like it is a Laton plate of about 1740. (P.S.) Allen supposed the Cardinal's hat which Seton uses on his plate was only allowable for a Cardinal; he asks Seton to explain the exact menaing of this symbol in his Church.
