Delaney, Richard E.:

to
For the past three years Delaney has been a student at Notre Dame University. He is presently canvassing Dr. (John Gilmary) Shea's "History of the Catholic Church in America." (He quotes) Archbishop Corrigan on the importance of studying American Catholic Church history. Shea's book is the only complete one that has ever been written on the subject. The work has beautiful style, and is edifying. (Delaney quotes from) Bishop (John Lancaster Spalding) Spaulding as to the historical value of the lives of the Catholic missionaries. He refers to Shea's scholarship. He will be willing to call with a copy of the book.

Since he wrote the explanation for the Ave Maria Hasley has received information worth mentioning. A Dominican living in Palestine writes that the expression is still used in daily language.

to (James F. Edwards:
Notre Dame, Indiana)
Edwards letter was indeed a sad one; she feels deeply for his loss. How often this year Notre Dame has been obliged to mourn! She is anxious for his health. She has written to (Richard) Delancy and fancies they can arrange matters. She is sending a tiny photo of her father, taken in 1865. If Edwards has any papers of Archbishop (John) Carroll that mention his voyage from England after his consecration she would like to know.

Ever since she wrote the article about the "commonweal" Stanfield has regretted it. She read Hudson's article last week with repentance. She saw the Commonwealers go past yesterday and the sight overpowered her. She found that Mr. ( ) Van Pelt, one of the police commissioners, felt as she did and was active in feeding and sheltering the poor fellows. The bulk of ( ) Randall's army is expected today.

He found everybody well, but his father away when he came. He met a Miss Putnam who was just leaving after a visit there. He had found a place in the office of Sweeney and Ellis. He is to study philosophy and Latin under Father Fitzgerald; it can do nicely with his law.
