Seton, W(illiam): (Tours, France)
to (Monsignor) Robert (Seton): (Jersey City Heights, New Jersey)

Seton has the letters of July 12 and 19; the letter contained the slip about Goff(?). After a few weeks at Quiberon they are again on the Loire about 2 miles from Tours. He received a letter from (Louis) Sands who is in Munich with his wife. What Robert says is true; it is a pity America has grown so fast and there are so few real Americans. They were disappointed in the Bretons, but Quiberon is the only place in France where they keep Sunday properly.

They were sorry to hear that Edwards was not well while staying in Chicago. Father (Arthur) O'Neil paid them a visit; he was on his way to Venice, Milan, etc. How nice it is for Notre Dame to possess the portrait of (Orestes A.) Brownson painted by auch an eminent artist as Mr. (George) Healy. Luigi Gregori is to paint four saints for the Minim's chapel.

Herbert-Mather, Edith: Bound Brook, New Jersey
to Monsignor (Robert) Seton: (Jersey City Heights, New Jersey)

The book arrived safely. They thought Seton had probably gone to Cape May. They hope Mrs. Powel(l) said something about visiting Edith's mother this fall. She has had her "Stories of Colonial Families" copyrighted. The American Historical Register has taken them and the first one will appear in September. The editor wrote her mother about associate editors and she suggested Seton's name. Their cousin's coming out on July 4th rather interfered with their conversation. Her mother and brother send regards.

Howley, Father R(ichard): London, (England)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Today Howley felt an inspiration to do something in the old abandoned line. He sends Hudson the result of his work. This has been the most eventful year of Howley's life. He left New York for Spain then Rome. It is not likely that Howley will return to America. He received a letter from Propaganda advising him not to go to his diocese until a new bishop is elected.

Audran, Father E(rnest): Jeffersonville, (Indiana)
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

Judge (Joseph) Belan writes that the portrait of Bishop (Celestine) de la Hailandiere fell into the hands of Mr. De La Bigne Villeneuve who married a cousin of the bishop. Audran will write him at once. The family of Hailandieres is now extinct. The original name was Guynemers. The addition of de la Hailandiere comes from an estate which passed from the family three generations ago. The father of Celestin and his brother Joseph was the owner of a few vessels. Audran's father who had been in the Royal Navy commanded one of these vessels for a season. His father was second cousin by the Perras family. Audran's family was well known in France, especially Gerard who obtained distinction in engraving Adam (?). Audran was Henry IV's officer of the wolf hunt. His father took part in the naval battle off the isle Oussant. Audran's funeral address at St. John's will complete what he had to say about Hailandiere.

Eaton, Reverend Arthur W(entworth) H(amilton): Newport, R(hode I(sland)
to Monsignor (Robert Seton: Jersey City Heights, New Jersey)

He thanks (Seton) for the clipping and would like a spare copy if he has one. If (Seton) ever stayed in Newport he would hate an aristocracy of money worse than he now does. Everything is a huge vulgar glittering soap bubble. He is of course having a good time and his friends are most kind to him and he is under no restraint. He leaves for Nova Scotia in September and will be glad to leave Newport. He asks (Seton) to send him Louis (Sands)' address.

Zahm, C.S.C., Father John A.: Neuilly, (France)
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

(This letter is marked) confidential. It is a month since Zahm left Notre Dame and not a word about the affair of the Sisters (of the Holy Cross?). Father General (Gilbert Francais, C.S.C.), knows nothing about the matter, and he cannot understand why he has not been notified by the proper authorities. He has already written twice to Father (William) Corby, (C.S.C.), to have Hudson come to France. He realizes that they are confronted with a calamity and must act at once to keep the ship afloat. Zahm asks Hudson to write immediately. Father General's project is that they both (Zahm and Hudson) to to Rome at once. If they act they can avert the impending disaster. Father (Arthur Barry) O'Neill, (C.S.C.), just arrived from Rome and has made a good impression.

 On the same paper:

( )
Francais, (C.S.C.), Father G(ilbert): (Neuilly, France)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Francais wishes to see Hudson in a few weeks. Hudson will see France and they will return to America together. Francais has written to the Provincial in order that he might give Hudson permission.

Spalding, Bishop J(ohn) L(ancaster): peoria, Illinois
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Spalding likes what Hudson said in the last Ave Maria on the temperance question. These people would make us a sect of Methodists. He encloses a hymn.

Seton, W(illiam): Tours, (France)
to (Monsignor) Robert (Seton): (Jersey City Heights, New Jersey)

(Seton)'s letter of August 2 came yesterday. When he and Sally walk out after sundown he wears an overcoat. The owner of their house Mr. Jevesy, lives with his family in the cliff close by. In the cliff behind the house is a line of fossil shells no doubt of the same species as those Seton brought to the N.Y. Museum of Natural History. (Seton) is to tell them about his second excursion. They return to Paris in a fortnight and sail for home on October 27. They have all read Mme. de Barberey's "Elizabeth Seton."

She has thought so constantly of her mother since she has been away from home that she would like Seton to say Mass for her mother. She expects to remain until September as she hopes to be greatly benefitted by the change. Although there is no church she is back in St. Joseph's every Sunday in spirit.

1894 Aug. 18
Lentz, Father F.C.: Bement, Ill(inois)
 to H(enry) F. Brownson: Detroit, Mich(igan)

Brownson's article in the Ave Maria caused thousands to apply for the "Prayer", and much good is being done. Father Lentz suggests a plan for the spread of Catholic literature, by which one cent a week might be collected from thousands in the parishes and with the large funds eventually collected, tracts, pamphlets, and books might be printed very cheaply, for the edification of Catholics, who are aften ignorant, and for the correction of ignorance and prejudice about the Church. Some arrangement for carrying this out might be made with the Paulists, or with the Catholic Truth Society of St. Paul, or with some new association. He is anxious to get the plan into operation.

Seton, W(illiam): Tours, (France)
to (Monsignor) Robert (Seton: Jersey City Heights, New Jersey)

A few days ago came two letters from (Seton), dated August 5 and 7. He is sorry that Robert feels the heat so; Dr. (Thomas) Lee used to advise carrying a white umbrella. Robert's article in the Catholic Quarterly was very interesting. He saw in the Paris Herald the arrival of the Shanleys; it would have made Carleton (Bayley) stare. (Louis) Sands is still in Munich. Sally likes housekeeping; her pies are tip-top. Only one small part of the great Marmontier monastery is left. Even this would have been destroyed but for Madame de Montalembert who gave it to the Ladies of the Sacred Heart. On the 28th they move to Paris.

1894 Aug. 22
Guichainville, Metayer de: New York, (New York)
to (Henry F.) Brownson: (Detroit, Michigan)

He blames the heat for his failure to answer Brownson's letter of June 24. He regrets to learn that Brownson has been ill. Among other comments, he relates an anecdote on the verb 'dire' which comes from Msgr. Olivier, Bishop of Evreux. Referring to Brownson's previous letter, Guichainville is in complete accord with the decision of (Monsignor Francis) Satolli. The new superintendent of the club considers selling the library and arranging a sort of recreation place featuring dancing, a restaurant as being a better use of the club, and one which would attract more members. Two days later, Guichainville continues his letter. He thanks Brownson for the address in Georgetown, (Indiana), where he might sell some of his Catholic treasures. The Club is faced with a high mortgage and is no longer interested in keeping the treasures of the library. Catholic Universities usually do not buy historical treasure, but rather wait for some generous gifts to augment their historical collections. He discusses his son's stamp collection and his desire for all stamps possible.

Heuser, Father H(erman) J.: Overbrook, P(ennsylvani)a
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

When Bishop (Camillus Paul) Maes wrote to Heuser after the Convention of the Eucharistic League, he knew he had to thank Hudson. Heuser has concluded to issue a Eucharistic number. Father (John A.) Zahm, (C.S.C.),writes from Paris. If Heuser could suggest any work to him, it would be to see how much soundness there is in the psychological speculations at the (Catholic) University, of which (Edward A.) Pace has given us a recent example in the Quarterly. Heuser cannot help feel that in the teaching of this young doctor there is much of the quality which makes his former teacher at Leipzig an agent for the spread of materialistic doctrines in Germany.

to (Henry F.) Brownson: (Detroit, Michigan)

Father Frieden is acquainted with Father Meschler's work on the gifts of the Holy Ghost and shares Brownson's opinion of it. He thinks a good translation of it would be likely to produce the best effects on both clergy and laity, and he will speak to Herder's representative in St. Louis and let Brownson know the result. In case Brownson wishes to apply directly to Father Meschler, he will send his address and a personal endorsement. Father (Martin M.) Harts, S.J., is to replace Father (Thomas E.) Sherman, S.J., as professor of ethics.

(Sands), Louis (Joseph): Lucerne, (Switzerland)
to Monsignor Robert (Seton: Jercey City Heights, New Jersey)

(Sands) is sorry to learn from (Seton)'s last note of August 5 that he has been so ill. (Seton) must not speak of growing old for he is still young and energetic. (Seton)'s description of his "crest" is very entertaining but so indefinite; it must be unravelled. (Seton) is to send a copy of the piece in the "Sunday (?) World" about himself. Was it written by (Reverend Arthur Wentworth Hamilton) Eaton? For he is one of Seton's admirers. The "crest" on (Sands') notepaper is an experiment. He admits their use is not in harmony with republican notions (?) but does not see why a family or individual does not have a right to a badge or insignia. They will leave Lucerne for a two-week tour. Will(iam Seton) has written two or three notes so they are in communication. (Sands) does not think will return for some time as Louise wants to see more of Europe. (Sands) cannot forget (Seton)'s kindness in marrying them so well except that address, which, however flattering, created some sensation.
