Heuser, Father H(ermann) J.: Overbrook, (Pennsylvania)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

There are many unfinished tasks and if Heuser finds it possible to get away from them the most profitable course is a journey to the Old World. The encounter of the Madison (Columbia Catholic) Summer school seems to be settled for peace. He notes that one of the chief strategists in the campaign has dropped out, and that the announcement is made that Dr. (John A.) Z(ahm, C.S.C.?) will reside in Rome. The world has taken hold of him.

Egan, Maurice F(rancis): Washington, D(istrict of) C(olumbia)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Egan still thinks there is a misunderstanding on Hudson's part. He never made any agreement by which the book rights of "Longworthy" or "Desmond" were transferred to Hudson. He did not transfer the rights of the Chumleigh stories to Hudson. When Hudson printed anything of his, Egan admitted the privilege but not the right. In the future he will transfer all book rights to Hudson.

Brandi, S.J., Father S(alvatore) M.: Rome, (Italy)
to Archbishop (Michael Augustine Corrigan: New York, New York)

Brandi thanks (Corrigan) for his letter of March 13 and thanks him for his congratulations on his reply to the Greek Patriarch and his regret about the vile attack on him appearing in the Freeman's Journal. His impression is that it was written by Father (Frederick) Rooker. He is sure it will not harm the Civilta Cattolica. Cardinal (Francisco) Satolli has written his high estimation of him. Brandi knows on excellent authority about alumno (Father Edward McGlynn) lecturing in Wilmington on the single tax in defiance of the bishop. This has been brought to Rome and is in the hands of the Holy Office. The lecture was taken down by a stenographer and a copy with affidavits was sent to the Congragation. A special pontifical commission under Cardinal (Camillus) Mazzella is examining the question of Anglican orders. There seems to be no doubt about the result and if a new decree is published it will be for absolute invalidity. The consistory is fixed for the beginning of June. While it seems that Cardinal Satolli will return to Rome by that time there is no news about his successor. Brandi would not be surprised if it is Msgr. Averardi. The new rector of the American College has been to see Brandi and gives satisfaction to Propaganda.

He enjoys Christian Reid's stories. He does not keep a diary. O'Kennedy describes his day. He sent a large letter to Father Mathew Russell, (S.J.), of the "Atlantic Monthly".

to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The kid (Kenneth O'Connor) has one of the medals. Stoddard did not go away during the Easter holiday. He will finish the St. Anthony sketch as soon as he can. The (Bellamy) Storers sent Stoddard two chairs. The C. W. S. Reading Circle of Salem is thinking of sending a cut-glass punch bowl to the Bungalow.

Finegan, S.J., Father Philip M.: Worcester, Mass(achusetts)
to Henry F. Brownson: Detroit, Mich(igan)

Father Finegan sends Brownson a bound volume of the Holy Cross (College) Purple for 1894-95. The Commencement issue is to show that Holy Cross cherishes and never forgets those sons she once fostered, as well as to remind the present generation of the noble example of those who have gone before; and they intend to publish in this issue pictures of the first students of the College. Brownson is asked to furnish pictures and sketches of himself and of William H., John H., and Orestes A. Brownson, Jr., and he is also asked to furnish whatever information he may have on Hugh McCaffrey, who entered the Society of Jesus, on Frank Armstrong, a General in the Confederate Army, on Henry H. Dodge, a judge at Fiffin, Ohio, on Michael T. Donohoe afterwards Brigadier-General, on Francis Lancaster, a Captain in the U. S. Army, killed in the Battle of the Wilderness. All of them were students at Holy Cross.

Horstmann, Ign(atius) F(rederick) Bishop of Cleveland: Washington, (District of Columbia)
to (Archbishop Michael Augustine Corrigan: New York, New York)

There will be a meeting of the (Catholic) University (of America) Board next Saturday. If possible (Corrigan) and Bishop (John) Farley should try to attend. An adjourned question about Father Georges Peries will come up and as Horstmann feels that Father (Joseph) Schroeder is the object of attack through Peries no one can tell what the consequences will be to the University. Bishop (John J.) Keane declared the question must be acted on at once. Horstmann urged that Peries be heard in his own defense, but this did not seem to meet with approval. Cardinal (James Gibbons) suggested that as Peries' contract had expired, he be reengaged for one year. This will be the question next Saturday. It will be most important as Archbishop (John) Ireland will be at the meeting on Saturday. The other side now has the majority.

Prichard, A(rmstead) M.: Charleston, W(est) V(irgini)a
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

He has been reading Blackstone faithfully since he returned home. It was his intention to spend the afternoons rambling over the hills of West Virginia but it became more of a labor than a pleasure. He is making a little money collecting accounts for a hardward dealer. He is glad Edwards thinks of him so often.

(18)96 Apr. 19
H(orstmann), I(gnatius) F(rederick), Bishop of Cleveland: (Washington, District of Columbia)
to Archbishop (Michael Augustine Corrigan: New York, New York)

As H(orstmann) feared, Father (Georges) Peries is not to be engaged for the next scholastic year. Bishop (John J.) Keane declared that he was engaged for only three years. All the deans were asked for their opinion, except Father (Joseph) Schroeder, and they felt that the best interests of the University demanded that Peries no longer be Professor of Canon Law. H(orstmann) did his best as did Father (Thomas S.?) Lee and they demanded that their negative notes be entered in the minutes.

Courson, (Barbara) Countess de: Paris, (France)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Courson's letter had just gone when she received Hudson's. She likes the title "Martyr Memories of England". Her husband has just been asked to become president of a "Patronage", a useful work instituted by the Bureau of St. Vincent de Paul.

(Horstmann), Bishop Ignatius Frederick: Cleveland, O(hio)
to J(ames) F. Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

He is quite sure he wrote Father Morrissey on receipt of his invitation to deliver the oration on occasion of the Commencement exercises, that all of June was already engaged. He will find it difficult to keep appointments already made. He has no ambition to pose as an orator on extraordinary occasions.

1896 Apr. 27
Mannion, J(ohn) F.: Chicago, Ill(inois)
to Henry F. Brownson: Detroit, Mich(igan)

Mannion inquires whether the 20 volumes of Brownson's Works include all the essays he wrote for Brownson's Review and the Catholic World or whether they are merely selections from these two magazines. He asks Brownson what he considers the distinguishing marks of Aristotle, Plato, St. Augustine, St. Thomas, and Francis Bacon, and offers his own characterizations of these philosophers.

1896 Apr. 28
Aubert, G(eorge) A.: Bluefields, Nicaragua
to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.: Notre Dame, Indiana

Aubert writes for a specimen copy of the Ave Maria. He sends a copy of the newspaper, The Recorder, published by him in Nicaragua. The Mosquito Reservation was colonized by Jamaican Negroes. Their spiritual wants were attended to by Moravian Missionaries, who have the Indian population completely under their sway. There is also a small Anglican community now forcing its way forward. The Catholic natives are indifference itself. The manner in which the Blessed Virgin's feasts are celebrated is a burlesque of religion. No note whatever is taken of the Catholics there. Aubert asks for a catalogue of Catholic school books.

(Rhodius), George: Indianapolis, (Indiana)
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

He was sorry to learn of Brother Celestine's death, for they had always been friendly. Rhodius has been troubled with his stomach. He went to see Behrhardt in "Izel." The production is the most magnificent he has ever seen.

Murray, Ella T.: Philadelphia, (Pennsylvania)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Among the many kind friends at Notre Dame none could have been kinder than Edwards. As time goes on they realize the death of their uncle, Brother Celestine, C.S.C. more and more. It was evident that he was much loved at Notre Dame. They are doubly indebted to Edwards as they have found it was through his instrumentality their uncle obtained for them the Pope's blessing. If Edwards endeavors to fulfill the last wish of Brother Celestine to obtain the blessings, it will give the recipients the greatest pleasure. She thinks that the brother had reference to Mrs. Mary R. Murray, her step-mother; Mrs. Annie McCaffrey; Mrs. Annie Campuzano.

1896 Apr. 29
E(des), E(lla) B.: Rome, Italy
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Edes sent off "Blessed Rita" in a hurry. Bishop (Casmiro) Genari of Conversano has been made Assessor of the Holy Office. She was informed by Miss ( ) Tibbets that (Luigi) Gregori had been nearly two years a dweller in Florence. The Misses Tibbets, friends of (Eliza Allen) Starr, were in Rome en route to Paris. Father (John A.) Zahm, (C.S.C.), will find things a little different in Rome from America. Edes sends two bits of poetry. The Sisters of Mercy, Broad St. and Columbia Avenue, are special cronies of Edes. They are preparing the apartment of the late (Ignazio) Cardinal Persico for (Francesco) Cardinal Satolli. The Holy Father (Leo XIII) is very generous with the funds of others. It is whispered that the Consistory is put off until September next. Satolli is fairly hated in Rome and his promotion to the Sacred College viewed a "Peruginism and favoritism". He has done nothing to deserve such an unwarrantable step. The only ones pleased with his promotion are the alumni of the Accademia Ecclesiastica for the simple reason that he will not come back as their superior. The idea of him as future pope, as put forward by Archbishop (John Joseph) Kain, such contemptible toadyism! is met with ridicule and scorn. Ditto that of (James) Cardinal Gibbons.

Audran, Father E(rnest): Jeffersonville, (Indiana)
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

Now that he received Edwards' letter he is sorry that instead of having one card sent to the head of the Community of Holy Cross in notice of his 50th anniversary, he did not have a particular one sent to each of his friends. It did not occur to him that members of the university could absent themselves at this time of the year. He would have been particularly pleased to have Edwards near him.
