E(gan), M(aurice) F(rancis):
(Washington, District of Columbia)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Egan encloses the relinquishment with the exceptions. The meaning of the note was that if Hudson should persist in his objection Egan would at once publish on his own account. He will do as he pleases with the stories he excepted. Egan would appreciate Hudson's intimating to Benzigers that there is no embargo on Conway.
Enclosure:1896 May 1
Egan relinquishes to Hudson all the book rights in all his contributions to the Ave Maria except "The Vocation of Edward Conway" and the Chumleigh stories. (Hudson writes on the back that) the exception of the Chumleigh book is not allowed.

Finegan, S.J.,Father Philip M.:
Worcester, Mass(achusetts)
to Henry F. Brownson:
(Detroit, Michigan)
Thinking that his letter of April 15 may have gone astray, Father Finegan repeats the requests made of Brownson in that letter, and also asks for his picture in uniform and a sketch of his life, together with photos and lives of his brothers, since there is to be an emphasis in the alumni number on those who have held rank in the United States Army. The pictures will be returned if Brownson requests.

Tiernan, F(rances) C(hristine Fisher):
Salisbury, N(orth) C(arolina)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Tiernan sends the article on Vaudoux-worship in Hayti. She has been busy with preparations for departure to Mexico. She offered "Cecil's Fortune" to Benziger Brothers. Arrangements had, she thought, been concluded when she received the enclosed letter. She had no idea it was necessary to write Hudson again before opening negotiations with Benzigers. She asks on what terms he will relinquish the copyright.

Faust, A( ) J.:

Faust knows Mrs. (Mary A.) Mitchell. She has already shown him the two volumes of Janssen bearing her name. Faust sends an editorial from the "Catholic Review" written by him. He has not read Mitchell's translation. Faust will be happy to give Hudson an article on the book. He suspects that future volumes of Janssen's History will depend on the sale of those now in print.

Tiernan, F(rances) C(hristine Fisher):
Salisbury, N(orth) C(arolina)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Hudson's letter regarding "Cecil's Fortune" surprised Tiernan. She has never had a desire to dispute Hudson's ownership of the copyright. His permission to dispose of it had been so unreserved that it did not occur to Tiernan to write of what she proposed to do. She will be mortified if she cannot carry out her agreement. If Hudson insists on publishing it himself she cannot possibly question his right to do so. Tiernan begs Hudson to let her hear from him as soon as possible since she is leaving for Mexico in a few days.

Murphy,:
J(ohn), Company
Baltimore, M(arylan)d
to Father Daniel E. Hudson, (C.S.C.):
Notre Dame, Indiana
They never harbored a willful intention of invading any legal rights of Hudson in "Jack Chumleigh". (Maurice Francis) Egan entered into an agreement with them for its publication and they copyrighted it. They hope Hudson will assent to the publication of "Jack Chumleigh" under circumstances similar to the publication of "Edward Conway" by Benziger Brothers.

Egan, Maurice Francis:
Washington, D(istrict of) C(olumbia)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Egan never intended to sell all his rights to Hudson in the contributions he made to the Ave Maria. He was startled when Hudson showed he considered their relations entirely of business. Legally Hudson may be in the right; morally he is not. What he wanted was an understanding as to his rights in past and future work. It is evident that Hudson wants him to sever his connection with the Ave Maria. All he can do is reimburse (John) Murphy.

Stoddard is glad he said nothing in his last letter to give offense. Someone has said enough to prejudice him against Hudson. There is a deal of the snake and backbiter in his nature.
