Leal, Harriett: (Auburn, New York)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

It is very kind of Edwards to remember his traveling companions. They often speak of their fellow voyagers on the good ship Mira and of the good times they had on her.

1896 Jun.3

Murphy, John, Company Baltimore, M(arylan)d
to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.: Notre Dame, Indiana

They are sure Hudson will realize that when (Maurice Francis) Egan offered to enter an arrangment with them, it was natural for them to assume that the owner of the story had the exclusive right of copyrighting it. If they were to cease publication a loss of several hundred dollars for which Egan would be responsible would be sustained by them. Will Hudson let them continue publication with the understanding that he will be substituted for Egan under the existing arrangement between him and themselves?

R(hodius?), L(ou): Indianapolis, (Indiana)
to J(ames) F. Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

She thought she would let Edwards know how things are. Night before last they thought that George (Rhodius) would never see daylight again. The doctors had to be with him constantly. His trouble is all in his bowels and kidneys. Nobody knows that she is writing this letter. Her aunt always said there is no writing and making Edwards' heart sore.

Herman made his First Holy Communion at the chapel of the Passionist Fathers. Huffer has to be careful and not fatigue his head too much.

As the cause of the beatification of Neumann is going on in Rome, the question as to his ordination must be clearly stated. He would be glad for information.

1896 Jun.10
de Lome, E(nrique) Depuy: Washington, (District of Columbia)
to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.: Notre Dame, Ind(iana)

Hudson is right. The old hatred of Protestants against their religion is shown in the conduct of the press and public opinion. If the insurgents were not receiving aid in the United States de Lome is sure they would be already discouraged. The proclamation of Maceo, sent to the journal by General ( ) Johnson, shows the hope founded on American intervention in the political affairs of Cuba. There would be persecution of the Catholic Church in Cuba if the insurgents won independence.

1896 Jun.13
Brandi, S.J., Father S(alvatore) M.: Rome, (Italy)
to Archbishop (Michael Augustine Corrigan: New York, New York)

Brandi has received (Corrigan)'s letter of June 2. Father (John) Edwards did not come to Rome from Paris. By this time it is probably known in the United States that Cardinal (Francisco) Satolli will not return to Rome for the consistory of June 25. His apartments were ready for him but the Pope decided that he should remain in the U.S. for some time yet, because the Pope wants to make some changes in the apostolic delegation before appointing a successor. Arrangements are being made for a supreme ecclesiastical court presided over by the apostolic delegate. At least four Roman prelates will be sent to Washington for that. Msgr. (Pietro) Gasparri was invited to be one but he declined. Rumor has it that the new delegate will be a religious, probably Msgr. Ciasca the present secretary of Propaganda. This is rumor, the only thing certain is about the court. There is no doubt about the lectures of (Father Edward McGlynn) being sent to Rome. They passed through Brandi's hands. Dr. (John A.) Zahm is in Rome. Brandi fears that his utterances on transformism and his relations with the liberal party will not help his work as procurator of the Fathers of Holy Cross. Msgr. (Denis) O'Connell was in Rome last week. The less said about him the better. In the next issue of the Civilta there will be an interesting correspondence about the U.S. If (Corrigan) will have a short piece on the new seminary written by Father Russo or some one else he will print it. It has been suggested that Brandi write an article in the Civilta in answer to the charges against the Jesuits by Archbishop (John Ireland) but since something more effective could and has been done the article will not appear.

Mannix, Mary E.: San Diego, Calif(ornia)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Manning thinks (Edward Sheridan) Purcell little short of fiendish (in his life of Cardinal Manning). She supposes it is all right about the account. She hopes Archbishop (William Henry) Elder will be pleased with her offering. She knows no poetess in the neighborhood save Margaret L. O'Malley. Mannix wishes she could get Maurice and Eugene de Guerin for Father P( ) Murphy, a priest they have there. She sent Colonel (Elmer) Otis the Life of Sergeant Bellosis.

(Nester), Eliza(beth): Chicago, (Illinois)

S(toddard), C(harles) W(arren): Washington, D(istrict of) C(olumbia)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Hudson's last letter and the enclosures made up for his silence. Jules was overjoyed at the picture. Bishop (Thomas) O'Gorman once went to confession to the Cure of Ars and received a medal from him. Bliss Carman, who proposed to work Stoddard's case(?) has gone to Europe. The "Atlantic Monthly" has written him asking for an article on Bret Harte. They said (William Dean) Howells agrees that Hudson is the only one to write on the subject.

 Enclosure:

A note marked "strictly business". All the serious articles are Hudson's alone if he likes. If the travel sketches are to be reproduced in book form Stoddard would like to have a royalty on them. If only Hudson could put his books in the hands of the proper dealers and keep them out of the dust of the Catholic book shelves.
