to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
The government has suddenly cut off their contract altogether and they are without resources. The Jesuit Fathers have given up and sent the Indian boys adrift. It is only a scheme to fill Fort Shaw whither even the Indians don't want to send their girls. They are all anxious to thole until the end. Does Hudson think he could give Mother a little help each year?

Cherubim, (C.S.C.), Sister M.:
St. Mary's Academy,
Austin, Texas
to J(ames F.) Edwards:
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Thanks to dear olf Mother she was kept informed of Edwards' wherabouts during the vacation. She hopes that George (Rhodius) has benefited by the trip not only from a sanitary point but has been morally benefited by Edwards' association. Edwards' example at Notre Dame is a shining light to the students. She is grateful that Mother's lonely solitude is interrupted at times by a call from Edwards and Father (Stanislaus) Fitte, (C.S.C.). They have 52 boarders there. At St. Edwards' College they were blessed with 7 new Sisters of the Order of St. Joseph, Kalamazoo; they found the kitchen and sisters' apartments in a very dilapidated condition. Her heart is at Notre Dame; she feels that she is out of the domain of human habitation. She hears that Fanny Gregori contemplates returning to America.

Prichard, A(rmstead) M.:
Morgantown, W(est) V(irgini)a
to (James F. Edwards:
Notre Dame, Indiana
He is studying law at the University of West Virginia. It is his constant aim to ground himself thoroughly in the first principles of law. Leaving Notre Dame (University) was one of the best things he could have done. He feels that he has done enough work at Notre Dame to enable him to get a Bachelor of Arts in law at West Virginia. Notre Dame taught him more than any other school could have done. With the help of Edwards he learned to control his temper. He came away with a good memory and a logical mind.

He has dedided to follow the law course and will attend Catholic University next year. In Washington he will be thrown more on his own abilities than at Notre Dame. Barry, he sees, has charge of the Scholastic.

Burns and Oates:
London, (England)
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.:
Notre Dame, Indiana
If Hudson can suggest a plan for making the Ave Maria popular there, they are most willing agents and debtors. The price difficulty is the first. They do not think any modification of the contents is necessary. Possibly "With Authors and Publishers" might be cancelled out and something more distinctively English supplied by Mrs. Tynan Hinkson. They would like to advertize at once.Joseph M. Hennessy signs.

McQuaid, Bishop B(ernard) J(oseph):
Rochester, N(ew) Y(ork)
to Archbishop (Michael Augustine Corrigan:
New York, New York)
The meeting to show respect to Cardinal (Francis) Satolli on his departure is very proper. McQuaid hopes Archbishop (John) Ireland's conversion will be permanent. He can never repair the harm he has done. The Catechism is unsatisfactory. Of these matters they can talk when they meet. (St. Bernard's) Seminary opened with 55 students, 20 from other dioceses. In September, 1897 they will be short of room.

It is a great comfort to know that Ben is determined to do well in his classes. He wrote that he really was delighted to be back at Notre Dame. The grandmother of Barrett Frost hasn't heard from him since he was taken from her in the court room; she is delighted that Barrett is in the care of the sisters.

Murphy, Father J( ) J.:
New South Wales, Australia
to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.:
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Murphy sends a money order for 6 pounds 12 shillings for 11 subscriptions to the Ave Maria. Australians are slow to patronize Catholic literature because they have none of their own worth patronizing. If Hudson could print an Australian edition of the "Ave" in Sydney it would be a success.

Father James (Durward) is at St. James, Minnesota. After her five lectures at Madison Starr went to Baraboo, Father John (Durward's) mission. The stones were given by Aubrey de Vere, Coventry Patmore, (William J.) Onahan and many others. Tomorrow is Mrs. Van Dyke's birthday.

Notre Dame, Ind(iana)
He encloses the few pages of the Spanish document relating to Louisiana and its first bishop which Edwards placed in his hands for translation. It will certainly be valuable for reference to some future historian, but he does not feel that it would pay him to translate it. His eyes are not equal to the task.
