to J(ames) F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana

Gavin, Kathleen L.:
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

She is going to ask a favor of Edwards, knowing his greatest pleasure is in doing things for his friends. She is going to write a paper on Corneille, Racine and Moliere. Sister Eugenie tells her that Father Fitte wrote something about these men in the Scholastic. She wants to know when they were published. She is just dying to visit St. Mary's.

1896 Oct.3
McQuaid, Bishop B(ernard) J(oseph): Rochester, N(ew) Y(ork)
to Archbishop (Michael Augustine Corrigan: New York, New York)

McQuaid encloses the dispensation. The news from Rome is astounding. The failure of the University is known in Rome and implicates the Holy Father. Cardinal Gibbons, Archbishop Ireland and Bishop (John) Keane were cock of the walk for a while and dictated to the country. They cannot repair the harm done. McQuaid was told that Father (John J.) Fedigan was in Rochester to arrange a rapprochement between Keane and McQuaid. It seems that Fedigan wanted to bespeak McQuaid's good will in favor of Msgr. (Sebastian) Martinelli. Martinelli is sure to have McQuaid's best wishes. McQuaid is glad to hear (Corrigan)'s seminary opened auspiciously. St. Bernard's has 57, and probably will have no more room in September, 1897. McQuaid will arrive the 13th. He has never been busier than just now. Cardinal (Francis) Satolli will leave America knowing his best friends now are those he opposed at the beginning.

S(toddard), C(harles) W(arren): (Washington, District of Columbia)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

When Stoddard saw the typewritten copy of his letter to (Frederick Horace) Clark, he nearly fainted. He is sure Clark's book will never become popular and that he cannot come to the Catholic Univ(ersity) for the next fifty years for it has not music in itself but is a living and increasing discord. Washington is not the place for Clark. The one thing he might do in Washington is play at a few houses. Concerts don't take well there. (Maurice Francis) Egan is back with a face of parchment and a wracking cough.

1896 Oct. 7
Burns, Will(iam) P.: Washington, D. C.
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

He is assistant editor of (The Catholic University) Bulletin and likes the work. Edwards ought to have the Bulletin for the library as they contain many articles of interest. It is destined to exert a great influence in Catholic circles. He was right in the middle of the cyclone that struck Washington. McMahon Hall suffered a little in broken windows. He supposes Edwards read of Bishop (John J.) Keane's resignation.

Liddell, Vinton: Charlotte, N(orth) C(arolina)
 to J(ames) F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Ind(iana)

He presumes Edwards has not forgotten their cruise on the Mira up to the North Cape in the summer of 95. The enclosed picture will remind Edwards of the pleasant times they had in Norway. They had a delightful year after leaving Edwards, spending their time in different countries. He hopes they may meet again sometime.

Smith, J. Francis: (Chicago, Illinois)
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

The Daprato Bros. asked but $13 for the bust of Mr. Onahan. The artists say they do not do very good work but he is going to take a chance. He will have the bust sent as soon as it is finished.

Ladd, Pilagie B.: Chicago, (Illinois)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

They had a pleasant trip and arrived on time to find that Mr. Ames had secured them rooms on the 12th floor of the hotel. They kicked so hard they were changed to the third floor. They hope Ben fully appreciates how highly hi is favored in having Edwards' friendship.

Berthold, Martha J.:
 to (James F. Edwards):

She thanks Edwards for his kindness to them all.

(Berthold), Virginia:
 to (James F.) Edwards:

She wonders if Edwards and the Latin prof have forgotten her by now. If the Latin prof wants her to come again he must keep his promise to her about Ben.

Prichard, A(rmstead) M.: Morgantown, W(est) V(irgini)a
 to J(ames) F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Ind(iana)

Edwards' much appreciated letter reached him some time ago. He is sorry that Edwards' plans for going abroad last summer failed. He hopes Edwards will forgive him if he appears impatient, but he wishes Edwards would cause to be sent the certificate of the work he did at Notre Dame.

Sanford, Louisa B.: St. Louis, M(issouri)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

1896 Oct.10
S(toddard), C(harles) W(arren): (Washington, District of Columbia)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Hudson's box arrived. Stoddard is disappointed he has nothing in this volume of the Ave Maria. Next year he hopes to give Hudson some Personal Reminiscences, among them a sketch entitled "A Mysterious History - Being the Extraordinary Adventures of Theresa Viscountess Avonmore". This woman was Stoddard's personal friend; she was Theresa Yelverton. He is ashamed of his article on Bret Harte in the Atlantic Monthly because of the changes they asked. A friend assures Stoddard he can secure his appointment as consul to Tahiti. He is disgusted with the institution he is associated with. The last book Kate Field has in her hand before her death was "Lazy Letters".

1896 Oct.12
Hurth, (C.S.C.), Bishop P(eter) J(oseph): Dacca, India
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The letter of the Government Commissioner of the Chittagong District about the convent was republished in order to secure some contributions for the purpose indicated. The gentleman is anxious to assist in beginning a school for boys under Brothers. The present boys' school is but a farce. Hurth is again as helpless as when the Radja made the offer. Hudson's remark about the Holy Water font in St. Patrick's Cathedral is right to the point. There is no doubt that charity is not always judiciously applied. Hurth appreciates Hudson's position as editor of the Ave Maria. Instead of being a worthy object of charity the new churches in Rome are a scandal. Half of them at least should be closed and the paraphernalia sent into the missions. The priests sitting in those churches should be chased into the missions. It is adding insult to injury to divert from the missions a large amount of help and then ask the missions to "chip in". Those Italian church beggars offer some title or honor to the one who will respond to their appeals. Father ( ) Lee was made honorary canon for contributing to the Loretto Basilica. They are now in the midst of a famine.

Mohun, Father M(ichael): New York, (New York)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

He was teaching at Gethsemani, Ky. (Gethsemani Boarding School) last year and when he left in June it was understood that he was to go back, but later received a letter informing him that he was not required. He never saw such ignorance among teachers and did not hesitate to say so. He wrote Mgr. (Francis) Satolli about getting back to Notre Dame, and although Satolli made inquires about him, he never answered him. He could have been back long ago but for one man, Father (William) Corby, (C.S.C.) whom Mohun used to take for a great friend of his. He has applied indirectly for admission to the Fathers of Mercy. He asks Edwards for a loan of $15.

Corby, C.S.C., Father W(illiam): Austin, Texas
to James F. Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Father Klein put on a play dedicated to Corby as Provincial. It was more than Corby expected. The building of St. Edward's College is a fine stone one and when the wing is added will be the finest in the state. There are seven sisters of St. Joseph there from Kalamazoo and are doing fine. The Sisters of Holy Cross at the Academy were extra kind to him.

Lalor, J. J.: Dublin, (Ireland)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

A Subscriber: Rochester, New York
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

He is not sure they can lay all the blame for bigotry on the ministers. Is it not best to admit that Catholics are not doing all they should to allay the mistrust with which they are received? No one questions the fact that intemperance is one of the greatest evils of their day. Is the Church doing what it should to stay the evil? Is it not true that the Catholic in politics in many cases looks to the saloon for his followers and that he legislates for that element in return for favors received? In that diocese (Rochester) two priests have been convicted and sentenced for crimes.

Heuser, Father H(erman) J.: Overbrook, P(ennsylvani)a
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Heuser was pleased with what Hudson said of Bishop (John Joseph) Keane and his resignation. As long as the faction lasted at the University Heuser never went near it; but when he learned how Keane had offered his hand to those who opposed his policy, he realized a man may have strong convictions and yet be noble hearted. Heuser does not think that in his zeal for the introduction of progressive methods Keane took sufficient account of the ancient conservative wisdom. He is delighted at Hudson's promise to come to Overbrook for a visit. Does Hudson know of any list of books for children?

Nester, Eliza(beth): Munising, (Michigan)
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

She has delayed answering her letters until she is far beyond the excusing point. She was much surprised when she heard that Edwards did not go to Europe. George Rhodius is fortunate to have such a true friend as Edwards. She often thinks of the great old times she had with Drusie. The Bishop said that the church at Munising would be built in the spring. She was disappointed because her brother could not remain longer.

Conway, Katherine E.: Boston, Massachusetts
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Conway sends the proof of her poem. She was glad Hudson liked their article on Bishop (John Joseph) Keane. It seemed strange to see that article in the "Catholic Citizen" of Milwaukee saying he was resigned to the change because he had to be. Many of out Catholic papers are dismal from the religious and literary standpoint. Catholics are now as public and vulgar as Baptists and Methodists, and they degrade their country by calling it Americanism.

Elzear, O.S.F.C., Father: Grawley, England

The October 10 Ave Maria in which C(harles) W(arren) Stoddard mentions the Guild of St. Anthony has brought them many letters of enquiry concerning the Guild. Perhaps Hudson could acquaint his readers with the contents of the membership card which he sends. He is enrolling Hudson as a member of the guild.

Rooker, F.Z.: (Washington, D.C.)

Carrier, C.S.C., Father Joseph C.: St. Laurent, near Montreal, Canada
to James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana

he sends a package of printed matter relating to their Museum and library at St. Laurent. His ardent wish for a separate fire-proof museum and library is about to be realized. It cost about $12,000 and is very elegant. What a pity if Edwards' Bishops' Memorial Hall should be consumed by fire?

Schmitt, Father E(dward) J. P.: San Antonio, Texas
to J(ames) F. Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

He arrived in Texas last Saturday. He was sorry he could not meet Edwards personally for his catalogue could not give a good idea of his books. The books are at Vincennes packed in 20 boxes. He does not intend to return for two years. The doctors think his lungs are not in such a bad condition. He has brought his Brute papers with him and will try to do as much work as possible with them. He will copy all he can of the most interesting documents in the Episcopal Archives. There are 24 large bundles of orders from civil authorities in Spain and Mexico to the superiors of the missions and 15 large folio volumes of Registers. He is anxious to have some definite settlement of his affairs.

Schreiber, Ellis: Bognor, (England)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Doubtless Hudson has heard of the unwonted presence of four Jesuit scholastics at Oxford this year. The house they occupy under the direction of Father (Richard F.) Clarke, (S.J.), is Campion Hall. Schreiber hopes shortly to write one or two articles on the Sacred Heart of Mary.

Gabriels, H(enry), Bishop of: Ogdensburg, (New York)
to Father (John Talbot) Smith: (Dobbs Ferry, New York)

He just recollected Smith's request for help in the new edition of the history of the diocese. The shortest way is to copy what was printed in the Times-Union on the occasion of his consecration corrected in the enclosed page. So long as Smith remains outside the diocese the Bishop will not rename him Procurator Fiscalis, since he will have need of that office. When Smith returns, he will find work more suitable to Smith's learning and zeal. The laudatory part of the article was overdone and would not do in the book. He asks that it be changed to fit the truth. (The enclosed page) indicates his education in Belgium and at Louvain, his ordination Sept. 21, 1861 by Bishop L. Delebecque in his private chapel. Gabriels received the degree of bachelor in theology in July, 1862, and his licentiate in 1864, with Bishop (John Lancaster) Spalding of Peoria. At the request of the bishop of the New York Province he and two other Louvain graduates under Dr. Canon Vandenhende founded St. Joseph's Seminary at Troy in 1864. When Vandenhende departed he became president, and taught history, liturgy, and Hebrew. Louvain named him doctor honoris in 1882. He was secretary of the 4th Provincial Council of New York in 1883 and of the Third Plenary Council.
