(Sanford), Irene:
St. Louis, Missouri
to (James F.) Edwards:
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
She is not so cruel as to write to Edwards on her beautiful red paper. The medal Edwards gave her is already hung in its special place. In three weeks Edwards will be with them for a long time. She trusts that they can give him as grand a time as he gave them.

Spalding, Bishop J(ohn) L(ancaster):
Peoria, Ill(inois)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
In Paris Spalding saw Father (John A.) Zahm, (C.S.C.), and took dinner at Neuilly with the Father General and the faculty. Zahm feels sore. The impression in Rome is that the Pope, in slapping Bishop (John J.) Keane in the face, has given a death blow to the (Catholic) University. With Keane, Spalding has lost all patience. A more disgusting state of things than the ecclesiastical situation is hardly conceivable. The only important question is whether Archbishop (John) Ireland is falling or rising in favor with Rome. Rich(ard) Slevin is in Louvain and will do well.

Sanford, L(ouisa) B.:
(St. Louis, Missouri)
to (James F.) Edwards:
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Their visit to Notre Dame was most enjoyable and they are much obliged to Edwards. She is sorry that Irene was foolish enough to write to Mr. Cornell. The weather has been quite a contrast with the snow they left in South Bend. She read of the death of John R. Fellows and wonders if he died in the church.

Weadock, G. Leo T.:
Saginaw, Mich(igan)
to (James F. Edwards:
Notre Dame, Indiana)
He thinks Father (Andrew) Morrissey (C.S.C.) is foolish to ask him to return to Carroll Hall. There are no comforts whatever there and one is under a tyrant's rule. As he is a heavy smoker to quit it so short makes him sleepy. He is not in the habit of going with young kids. He has a first class job and is the third heaviest stockholder in the company. If Studebaker has a private car Edwards might suggest to him to place their extension step on the car. Their business is a success.

Hall, Sue Esther:
Erie, P(ennsylvani)a

(Sanford), Irene:
St. Louis, Missouri
to (James F. Edwards:
Notre Dame, Indiana)
Edwards is just horrible. He does not want to come there, that's the reason. Edwards seems to take a great many vacations. She is not going to let him be running away so much from school. She encloses a letter for him to hand to her cousin, Francis B. Cornell. She talks so much of Notre Dame that the boys are getting jealous.

Wurzer, Louis C.:
Detroit, Mich(igan)
to (James F. Edwards:
Notre Dame, Indiana)
He asks pardon for approaching Edwards a second time as regards a position in the library for his brother Edward. Upon the graduation of Mr. Regan and Mr. Magruder, Edward should be the first on the list. As soon as he and Henry are established in business they can help Edwards. The poor boy was taken from school to help in his father's office after business reverses came to them. The boys tell that Edwards made the class in Modern History interesting after his trip to Europe. Stories of travel abroad is a stimulus to the study of history. Louis is in the law business with Charles Flowers, the corporation counsel of the city of Detroit. Flowers is the right-hand man of the mayor and of Governor-elect Pingree, so that Louis is in the very camp of state politics. Several weeks ago he had the privilege of meeting the donor of the Mason Medal to Notre Dame. He was surprised to find him so young a man. The donor tells him that his father began the custom with the intention of having his son win the prize, but the son never got any further than honorable mention.

(Washington, District of Columbia)
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.):

What manuscript can Stoddard send? He cannot do the Mysterious History until he has some free time. He can send some "California Sketches". The Varsity is wearing Stoddard out; it is telling on his nerves. He has to go this afternoon to a special faculty meeting where the priests will fight like cats and dogs. Kenneth (O'Connor) insists on accompanying him.

She has made arrangements for Ben to have the use of a 96 tandem during the holidays while awaiting the 97 patterns. She is sorry that Irene continued to write to Mr. Cornell.

She is sorry she put him to such trouble in getting that letter and owes hi an apology for sealing the letter enclosed to Edwards. All of a sudden it flashed upon her what a rude thing she had done. She cannot imagine how Edwards could change his mind about coming to visit them. She is going to no end of dances during the holidays.

If Hudson sends the proof of the "Wonder Worker", Stoddard will perhaps be able to better the text a little. The perpetual disgust the Catholic University affairs keep him filled with makes it impossible for Stoddard to hope for recovery. (Theodore F.)
