Leeper, D(avid) R.: South Bend, Ind(iana)
 to J(ames) F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Ind(iana)

Daniel McDonald's paper on the "Removal of the Pottawattomies" read before their Historical Society put Leeper to sea on several points. McDonald claims that the cabin described in the Jubilee History on p. 29 was situated at the Twin Lakes, Marshall County, instead of at the twin lakes at Notre Dame. Leeper asks when was the first college building ready to be occupied. As to the little cemetery, Brother Francis informed him that it was started by Badin. Leeper has no clue as to who was buried there or as to the date of its abandonment. He regrets the necessity of annoying Edwards but he has no other way of getting the desired information.

(Huffer), Estelle: Paris, (France)
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

She sends the united good wishes of their little circle that 1897 may be a blessed year for Edwards. What sad news Edwards has given them of (George) Rhodius! It must be heart-breaking for his mother to see him in such a condition. Drink is the great bane of American life. She would not advise Edwards taking a long trip with Rhodius; it would be too much responsibility for him. Leo's brother Herman is convalescing from an operation. Estelle had been confined to her bed for several weeks.

Wabraushek, J. will(iam): Manistee, Mich(igan)
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

Inventory has kept him very busy. Then too at this time of year they have to fit out their salesmen with prices, instructions, etc. Edwards will be surprised to hear that they have a three months old girl. That makes four children in the family. He can hardly realize that he has a wife and four choldren. He feels about as young as he did when at Notre Dame, although he is 30 now. His oldest girl is just learning to skate and he has his hands full. He is now one of the directors of the company.

He had expected to return to Notre Dame but his health has not been as good as usual. There is a new student Hubbard Nye at Notre Dame. His grandfather Judge Hubbard who is sending him to school is one of the most prominent men of the state. He determined to send Hubbard to Notre Dame because of what Wheeler's father said about the place. If Edwards would get acquainted with the boy he would be doing him a favor. 1897 Jan. 23
Crumley, C.S.C., Father Thomas A.: Brookland, D(istrict of) C(olumbia)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

The "Post" which Crumley sent has an accurate and full account of Father Thomas A. Conaty's installment. (James) Cardinal Gibbons' speech was the event of the evening. His sentiment with reference to the Constitution created a sensation. So great was the applause that the Papal flags seemed out of place - or so the Germans who were present must have thought. Crumley's impression of Conaty was not favorable. He brought forward the dictum of G. Stanley Hall to support his claims that the Catholic University was the only institution in the land which was carrying out the university ideal. Conaty showed bad manners in "seeing" Hall and going so many better. Crumley wouldn't for a moment criticize Conaty before Germans. It is a consoling thing too that (Charles Warren) Stoddard is appreciated in high place. Dr. (Edward A.) Pace is somewhat better. Whether he will go South is still a matter of doubt.

1897 Jan. 24
Sanford, L(ouisa) B.: (St. Louis, Missouri)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

She was sorry to hear of Ben's trouble and regretted that Professor (Charles Percy McHugh) should have forgotten himself so far. She thinks in making Ben an apology the Professor has made a great concession and Ben should appreciate it. She would not entertain Ben's suggestion to study privately at home. She is grateful to Edwards for the interest he takes in Ben.

to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

He asks for a ground plan and information about Notre Dame. Edwards will see by the enclosed what is wanted. They have been at him for some time to get information. P.S. If Edwards can get him a general plan of the sister's convent he will be thankful. They are going to build a new convent for Sisters of St. Joseph in Brentwood and he wants to get different plans.
