to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Father (Fidelis) Stone, (C.P.), write to Spalding's sister, Mrs. ( ) Slevin, that he went to Washington for the installation of Father (Thomas J.) Conaty and was thoroughly disgusted. Archbishop (John Joseph) Keane is, Spalding supposes, to get $80 a month as Canon of St. John. Archbishop (John) Ireland is a hoodoo - whatever he touches seems to go wrong. Notre Dame was no doubt a better climate for (Maurice Francis) Egan than Washington. Spalding could not think of going to the installation. He hopes to go to Notre Dame. Ireland wants to meet him in Chicago, though it will not be pleasant and can hardly do any good.

Fish, Grace S.: Newark, N(ew) J(ersey)
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

Edwards is the one man of her acquaintance who always does the right thing at the right time. It is a pleasure to be remembered by friends when away from home. She thinks she will follow Edwards' example in the future and have no more birthdays. They come entirely too often. Her friends gave her some fine pieces of pewter. So after all there is some compensation for birthdays. She feels guilty in having such a glorious time while Fred is at home digging away, allowing her to throw away his hard earned dollars.
