Ganss, Father H(enry) G.: Carlisle, P(ennsylvani)a
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Ganss sends a manuscript on devotion to the Blessed Mother. He secured a copy of Justin Fulton's "Is it Mary or the Lady of the Jesuits" from which Dr. ( ) Frysinger, the collegiate preacher at Dickinson College, drew his ammunition. Ganss determined to make an anthology of Protestant tributes to the Blessed Virgin. He believes it would do good if circulated in cheap and presentable form. Can the work be published serially in the Ave Maria?

to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

An attack upon the sisters has started from Catholic sources. If they are to be persecuted out of existence it is not fair that they bear the blame. In the case of a white congregation the situation would not be at all serious. (On the stationery is printed) Congregation of American Sisters.

Brownson)'s death, but since April 17 falls on Holy Saturday, that date will be impossible. Brownson is asked what date after Easter will be convenient for him and also what his subject will be.

1897 Apr. 8
Gregori, Fannie: Cormons, Austria
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

As Edwards heard from Sister Aloysius she received the letter containing the check. She does not know how it was lost for so long. She is grateful for the Scholastic; it seems to keep up the link that bound her to Notre Dame. In one of the past numbers she was delighted to see the article about her father. Her brother is still quite poorly; he is going down to Rome to consult their cousin the physician. She is still satisfied with her position.

Since any date will be agreeable to Brownson, he has selected Tuesday, April 27, at 10:00 A.M. He trusts Brownson will be the guest of Notre Dame as long as he feels he can conveniently remain.

King, Mrs. A(nnie) F.: St. Louis, (Missouri)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Edwards will never realize how fully she appreciates his generous heart. The lovely care and attention Edwards has bestowed upon her little darling, (W. Barret Frost), has been so unexpected that it has almost taken her breath away. He mentions that her boy may go abroad this summer. She is not allowed to see him here so it does not matter. Every means will be resorted to win him away from her. Mrs. Hirschberg knows full well that in order to gain her point she must separate the child from her entirely. She asks Edwards to use his influence with the child so that he will not forget them. The child has always been called Barret. The Scholastic lists him as W. Frost. His father Mr. Frost cares nothing for his child; his is ruled by his sister Mrs. Hirschberg.

Dorsey, Ella Loraine: (Washington, District of Columbia)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Does Hudson want a list of books in the Uniform Edition or all the books now in print? The lack of polish to "Sadie's Knight" is due to the fact that it is a first draft.

Spalding, Bishop J(ohn) L(ancaster): Peoria, Ill(inois)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Spalding had seen notice of Father Fidelis (Stone, C.P.'s) going to Rome. There is getting to be quite a colony of American ecclesiastics there. He is sorry that (Maurice Francis) Egan is not in good health. He had an interview with Archbishop (John) Ireland. Though Spalding had a certain sympathy with some of his views, they (he and Ireland) are radically unalike.

Sanford, L(ouisa) B.: (St. Louis, Missouri)
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Edwards' letter was a disappointment to them as they hoped he would be able to spend a few days with them. Ben will be able to put on a shoe in a day or two. A bill was sent from Notre Dame, charging him for a military suit. As Ben could not join the military unit without her permission, she asks that the bill be corrected.

Huffer, Estelle E.: (Paris, France)
to (James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, Indiana)

She thanks Edwards for the prayers he had said for Leo's father. He died suddenly with congestion of the lungs and has left the memory of a perfect example of a true Christian life. She has seen several times Father (Patrick) Condon, (C.S.C.), who is at Neuilly; he looks well and seems to like it over there. They would be delighted to have Edwards make a stay with them.

Anson, Geo(rge): Merrill, (Wisconsin)
to James F. Edwards: Notre Dame, (Indiana)

He urges Edwards to accept the enclosed likeness of himself. This is his fourth attempt to get rid of the picture. He has been at Madison since September but returned when his father and mother went to Hot Springs. He trusts Edwards is the same dignified chap as of old. Anson has taken on a little flesh.

E(des), E(lla) B.: Rome, (Italy)
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.): Notre Dame, Indiana

The cause of Blessed Rita of Cascia was renewed in the last session of the Sacred Congregation. Edes tells of a brother who was released from his vows and allowed to become a priest through the intercession of Blessed Rita. Hudson can obtain stamps of St. Antony of Padua from Father Godfrey Schilling of the Commissariate of the Holy Land. Rome has been convulsed by the attempted assassination of the King of Italy. There seems no security for life and property in Rome. What does Hudson think of the finale of the mystification of Diana Vaughan? It seems that even many of the Freemasons were taken in by the conversion of that scamp, Leo Taxil. He deceived even the Holy Father (Leo XIII) and his entourage, for they were certainly led somewhat astray. The San Francisco "Monitor" recently dubbed Edes a "sour and wintry virgin". Anent the presence in Rome of the ex-rector of the Catholic University. Be sure to let the "consecrated blizzard" (Archbishop John Ireland) see Edes' photo which she gave to (James F.) Edwards. Edes sees Ireland's charming phiz in a recent issue of that filthy New York Journal together with that of the irrepressible Father (Thomas J.) Ducey. (Anthony) Comstock did well to seize that book of D'Annunzio.

to Father D(aniel E.) Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Ganss thanks Hudson for his letter anent the manuscript "Mariology" submitted to him. He agrees with Hudson that Dr. (Justin) F(ulton) be relegated to the background and the whole affair be made as impersonal as possible. The financial question he leaves to Hudson's discretion.

1897 Apr. 30
Sanford, L(ouisa) B.: St. Louis, Missouri
to (James F.) Edwards: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

She wants Edwards to attend his friend's wedding. It will be a grand affair and Edwards could visit them at the same time. Since Ben's return to Notre Dame, she has had two letters from him full of complaints. He gives her to understand that if he goes to school at all next year it will be to a day school. This is all due to the influence of some boys he ran with the few days he was out.
