Fahey, Ja(me)s F.:
Balt(im)o(re), (Maryland)
to H(enry) F. Brownson:
(Detroit, Michigan)
Fahey encloses $3 for Vol. 7 of Brownson's Works and the portrait and asks whether this volume contains all the strongest discussions on spiritism. He has tried to explain spiritism to friends engaged in it on the grounds of demonism, but the revelations of their departed friends praying and singing beautifully make them think spiritism good. They are mostly Evangelicals, but there are some Catholics among them; and two of the leading mediums call themselves Catholics; the thing is growing rapidly.

Eccles got some valuable information to be utilized on the other side. She saw the President (William McKinley) and his wife. When (Ida) McKinley heard Eccles came from London she seemed quite to stiffen up. She is now on her way to Boston and then on to Niagara.

Coppens, S.J., Father C(harles):
Omaha, Neb(raska)
to (Henry F.) Brownson:
(Detroit, Michigan)
Father Coppens has read Equality and Democracy with great interest and has gone over a portion of it with his pupils in Ethics, who were then studying the functions of civil government, as it gave him an opportunity to emphasize many remarks he had made. But Brownson takes so very gloomy a view of things that he must have taken a drink of vinegar before beginning the lecture. There are two sides to such a question and the dark side is fully presented; but Father Coppens's more cheerful view makes him still quite hopeful of this country's future: there is so much conservative common sense in the Saxon stock. He has been preparing for publication a series of lectures given to medical students on moral principles and medical practice, treating of craniotomy, abortion, venereal excesses, etc., and firmly maintaining moral principles in relation to them. His dilemma is that a non-Catholic firm will probably not care to publish it, and a Catholic firm could not give it wide circulation among medical men and their students.

He will never forget Edwards' kindness or the times they used to have over at Mr. Hayners. He has had a new march published which he will mail to Edwards. A good performer can make it sound quite nice. He knows Brother Girard will object to it on account of his not studying harmony. He wishes he was back taking lessons from Brother Girard. He and Tom are kept busy playing at parties, concerts, etc.

Stoddard is pretty sure that he will have to go to Chicago in June. There is an artist there, W( ) W. Denslow, who wants to work with him. He is now married to Amber's eldest daughter and they are settled at Highwood. Rand McNally is ready to undertake "A Cruise Under the Crescent", illustrated by Denslow. McClure engaged Elizabeth Stewart Phelps to write a life of Christ for him. She furnished the copy but McClure said it hasn't enough snap in it. Stoddard dined with the Egans last Friday; he felt as if (Maurice Francis Egan) were laughing in his sleeve.
