Shea, Isabel:
Elizabeth, New Jersey
to (James F.) Edwards:
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
She sent Edwards one of the catalogues of Mr. Morrison. She trusts Edwards will write to Morrison as he is the only one who just now is making a speciality of collecting the works of her father (John Cilmary Shea). It makes her feel badly to know that only two Catholic Institutions have a complete set of her father's works, Georgetown and the Philadelphia Catholic Historical Society.

They were greatly pleased to get Edwards' photograph. Edwards is looking well. Their little boy is just where he can talk plainly and they have lots of fun with him. Nothing would please them better than to have Edwards visit them. They have moved into a very comfortable home. Their manager is away for two months and all the work is on him. He will take a vacation in the fall no matter how the work goes. Businesshas not been so good with them.

Elder, Archbishop William Henry:

to J(ames) F. Edwards:

It is necessary for him to have at home the letters which he entrusted to Edwards. He asks that Edwards make an itemized list of those he desires to keep for the library. He presumes that it is not necessary for him to carry crozier nor mitre. No doubt Edwards has historical ones that will answer for the Mass on the 18th.

Langel, G.:
Ruth, Mich(igan)
to H(enry F.) Brownson:
Detroit, (Michigan)
When in Detroit last June Langel called on Brownson at an unseasonable hour, as a debt of gratitude and because he had no other time. He read yesterday of the pitiful story of the distress of the son of Major ( ) Crooks of the British Army and sends Brownson the copy of the Witness. Brownson will remember Father ( ) Cosgrove of Elira, who came with Langel once to Father (B.G.) Soffers, when Brownson also happened to be there. It is a sad thing for a devoted religious man like Major Crooks. Langel invites Brownson to visit him at his home near Lake Huron. As Rousseau once said to Bernardin, 'If Fenelon were alive, I would like to be his servant in order to be always with him,' so Langel says to Brownson.

How kind of Hudson to print his verses! Lee troubles Hudson with further manuscripts. (Aubrey) De Vere came and saw Lee for two hours last week. He expects his memoirs to be published in October. Lee was at the great garden party at Lambeth Palace when (Herbert) Cardinal Vaughan was present. This shows that an advance in charity has been made since 1850.

The notice in the Ave Maria was read in their refectory before all the Shaker community. They cannot conceive of any life as the perfect Christian life, save the one of denying oneself completely. In their community at Lebanon, N(ew) Y(ork), they are to open a boarding academy to foster vocations. Catholic priests and sisters are frequent visitors to their village. She just received from Geo(rge) (Rhodius) a New York draft for $150. It is so badly signed that she hardly believes it is his handwriting. She won't believe that George has used up all his money. The lady he travels with made the remark that she had to pay all the expenses. She is sorry she raised a son with an income of $700 a month and has to travel now on a woman's expense. The woman said that Edwards was the cause of George's drinking. Mrs. Rhodius is so sick she does not know what to do.

He just returned from the G.A.R. encampment at Buffalo. The boys looked well but showing age. Archbishop (John) Ireland was mustered in the G.A.R.; he made a most excellent impression and is teaching the people that a man can be a good Catholic and a patriotic citizen at the same time. He will ship the nine Gettysburg paintings and will be at Notre Dame to see some of them varnished and give an idea of what they are. They are painted by Frank D. Briscoe. They cost him $300 each but he will give the lot for $250 as he will never go on the road with them again. If desired he can give four illustrated lectures while he is there.

He encloses something of the wording of the memorial tables Edwards mentioned some time ago of the Pilgrimages made to the church and to the Grotto. He asks that Edwards consider them and return. When this is done Edwards will have a good chance to induce Bishop Joseph (Rademacher) of Fort Wayne to grant approval of obtaining what Edwards mentioned the other day.
