to (James F.) Edwards:
Notre Dame, Ind(iana)
He met Mgr. Stephan at St. Patrick's and accompanied him to his residence where he showed him the chasuble he promised Edwards and also a cape which belonged to Bishop (J.H.) Luers. Both articles were shipped to Edwards. Stephan feels sickly and intends to go to Europe for the Kneipp Kur. As he has more relics it would be a good idea to give him a little puff in the Scholastic. He is very friendly toward Notre Dame.

Heuser, Father H(erman) J.:
Overbrook, P(ennsylvani)a
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Heuser is proud of any eulogy which comes from the Ave Maria. He spent the summer in Louvain. The men who presently manage the American College there are excellent. He doubts whether such a trio as Monsignor ( ) Willemsen, Dr. (Jules) de Becker and Dr. (William) Strang can be found in any of their seminaries. Heuser became acquainted with (Augustinus) Lehmkuhl and the writer of "Cursus S. Scripturae" in Exeter. He got articles promised in England, and he went to Dublin as some hope had been held out that the Irish Ecclesiastical Record might combine with the "Am(erican) E(cclesiastical) Review".

Mulholland, St. Clair A.:
Philadelphis, (Pennsylvania)
to J(ames) F. Edwards:
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
He wants about 20 copies of the "Ave Maria" that contained the account of the Notre Dame, G.A.R. Post. He has procured a photograph of the Irish Brigade Monument at Gettysburg and has ordered the canvas for the picture, but he is still in favor of painting the fight of the Monitor and the Merrimac. Mrs. General Francis Meagher has broken up housekeeping and is making a tour of Europe, but he will go for her just as soon as she returns. The Post of Notre Dame has certainly made a great sensation and is calculated to do good. (P.S.) He intended calling up Edwards' mother's claim but feels that it would be better to wait until they get all the evidence.

Seton, Mgr. Robert:
Jersey City, N(ew) J(ersey)
to (James F.) Edwards:
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Edwards' letters are always interesting. Seton is edified at Edwards' energy in moving about so constantly for the good of Notre Dame. Seton might has well be a Hottentot in so far as he has any share in the contemporary Church history of his native land. Bishop (Winand) Wigger is an ultra German. He often thinks what a position an archbishop of New York could make for himself if he were only an American in the sense that Vaughn is an Englishman.

Brownson, H(enry) F.:
Detroit, Mich(igan)
to Father> (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Brownon thanks Hudson for promoting the writings of his father (Orestes A. Brownson). Before his father came to Detroit to die, he wrote that all his papers would be turned over to him before his death. Brownson has resumed work on his life and is well advanced. His notion of a biography is to make a person known and at the same time to teach a moral lesson. He has inserted a good many letters from well known contemporaries. Would Hudson advise leaving them out? Brownson's plan is to show Protestants that what truth they hold finds its logical complement in the Catholic Church and to make Catholics aware that - Hudson knows what.

The Milwaukee Journal gives the views of a conference of the bishops of the Episcopal Church on the union with Rome. Brownson is asked to note in the copy Doyle sends him Bishop ( ) Worthington's views and an article compiled anonymously by Doyle. He was tempted to quote more fully from Brownson's Works in regard to the assertion that "the faith was given to man through the scriptures." He asks when the volume promised in "Faith and Science" treating on the dogmas and mysteries of faith will appear. Monsignor (Januarius) De Concilio promised to write more if he received encouragement from the public. Doyle hopes Brownson cannot complain of this, though readers who think are few.
