Bishop (John Lancaster) Spalding's "Thoughts and Theories of Life and Education" is a precious volume. They begin their Christmas retreat after the morning service next Sunday. to (James F. Edwards:

The increase of lay students at Catholic University has been rather slight. Most of them are law students. The course in law is very thorough. He can now realize the true worth of Edwards' generous advice in regard to a profession. For the average young fellow literature means slavish labor and starvation. He feels that he can never repay Edwards' kindness and forbearance with him when he was so headstrong. Jim Flynn will graduate in medicine this year.

He is glad that Edwards received the package of letters safely. He is afraid that they have no value unless as coming from Mother Seton's grandchildren. But as Edwards says even those things which are now of little value may have some value in the course of time. He heartily indorses Edwards' idea of collecting everything he can get relating to Catholic Church history.

St. Joseph, Sister:

to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Sister thanks Hudson for his enclosures from the "Ave Maria" for the three sums. Sister is leaving by the west train to bring a number of boys and girls gathered in a place 100 miles from here. There are some children who were taken by natives to be brought up in their houses, but the fire of their charity soon cooled. The Sisters of St. Joseph are primarily French, but it counts many Irish in its numbers, of which Sister St. Joseph, is one. The boys and girls are helping to build a home for the girls. They must be provided with blankets and clothes and it is also time to make the provisions of rice, etc. Sister has also brought in a number of old infirm people, so emaciated and miserable that they would have died within a week. They expect 200 children to be given to them in a few days.

St. Joseph, Sister:
Nagpur, India
to Father (Daniel E.) Hudson, (C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Sister thanks Hudson for the donation he procured for them. This is the time for the half-yearly provision of rice and blankets too are sorely needed. It was through the "Ave Maria" that they received the aid. Perhaps Hudson could transmit a few lines to the generous priest that sent them the donation. Their boys and girls are in the best of health. There has to be a change of Sisters and Brothers often because of malaria. As the chapel is too small, the dormitory is turned into a chapel on Festivals and Sundays especially. They have no hospital yet.
Enclosure:(1897) Dec. 8
St. Joseph, Sister:
Nagpur, India
to the Father who sent $500:
Sister thanks him for the handsome donation. They had one sad experience— a young lad married one of their big girls and left their care. Her heathen husband discovered her and stole her away. If they have sufficient funds they will try to employ the married. The Protestants have erected a mill in their place where they keep the famine children they took. It is a weaving mill, and supplies work for the children as well as income. Money is not wanting to them. The children are wanting in nothing there. Sister hopes other will imitate Father's generosity.

Ruesing, Father Joseph:

to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.):
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
The two missionaries killed by the Chinese at Tsin-ning were not Jesuits but members of a German missionary society whose mother house is at Steyl, Holland. Father Franciscus Nies was sent in January 1885 to the Chinese mission of which Bishop J( ) B. Anzer is the head. The other, Father Richard Henle, has been on mission but a short time. A telegram saying "Nies, Henle killed" reached the mission house at Steyl. Anzer then at the general chapter, reported the matter personally to the German chancellor and asked for protection of his missionaries in China. A series of misdeeds by the Chinese has induced the German emperor William II to teach the Chinese a lesson. We should be thankful for the example William II is giving to other nations.

Goodrich, J. C.:
Burlington, V(ermon)t
to H(enr)y F. Brownson:
Detroit, Mich(igan)
Goodrich has read President ( ) Whitby's letter with interest. C. G. Eastman entered the University of Vermont in 1833 but did not graduate in consequence of some trouble with the faculty during which he was suspended and a friend of his expelled; he was a newspaper editor most of his life, issued a volume of poems in 1848, which was revised and enlarged in 1880, became a state senator, was granted the honorary A. M. in 1852, died in 1860; he was assistant editor of a democratic paper while in college. As to the LL.D. of (?), he can find no evidence, though he lists the catalogues and bulletins in which he looked. As the same address of (Orestes A.) B(rownson) was delivered at Dartmouth a week before, he looked in the Dartmouth catalogue but did not find the degree mentioned. If he finds the Records of 1843, he will write to Brownson again.

The Ave Maria and the Tablet give Starbuck glimpses into the Catholic world which he would not get otherwise. The newspapers blunder in talking of the present Czarina as having been baptised into the Catholic Church. The Independent may well say that, if Father ( ) Cunnion(?) has declared it a matter of lamentation to see non-Catholics in high office in Catholic countries he gave his own cause into the hands of the A(merican) P(rotective) A(ssociation). It was only in pursuance of her general custom that Eccles spoke of retaining her copyright. It gives her pleasure that Hudson thinks of issuing "For Daily Bread". Hudson's name figured first on the list of American friends sent to Eccles' publishers. Perhaps her second book may be more readily taken up by a transatlantic firm.
