Huffer, Estelle E.:
London, (England)
to (James F. Edwards:
Notre Dame, Indiana)
Friday afternoon found them safely landed in Liverpool. They had the great consolation of hearing Midnight Mass before sailing on Christmas Day. Through the kindness of one of the Jesuit Fathers they obtained admission to the Sacred Heart Convent Chapel. They wish they could have remained in America longer. Herman and Mary are delighted with the pretty college pins Edwards gave them. There is a dense fog in London today.

to William Hoynes:
Notre Dame, Ind(iana)
He has just returned from Washington to find Hoynes' letter and catalogue of the univer sity. As for Judge Crumpacker, he likes him very much. He impressed him as a man who improves on acquaintance. Many changes have occurred since he attended Notre Dame (University) in 1875. If James F. Edwards remembers him, he would be pleased to welcome him to New Mexico as one of his old instructors. Anytime he can say a good word for Notre Dame he will be more than pleased to do so.

to (James F. Edwards:

The last thing he ever heard Father Corby say was about Edwards, that day they accompanied Bishop Clancy through the University. It was about the immense amount of time and trouble it must have cost Edwards to gather all those things together. He has all in readiness to start with 10 students. He will introduce himself gradually to a just and intelligent public. Edwards may tell Father Morrissey all about him.

Bonnet, Father Joseph:
Rome, (Italy)
to Archbishop (Michael Augustine Corrigan:
New York, New York)
Bonnet arrived at Rome two days ago. He called on Cardinal (Lucido) Parocchi and conveyed to him (Corrigan)'s greetings. Parocchi spoke of (Corrigan)'s episcopal virtues, his attachment to Catholic traditions, the soundness of his views on the policy of the Church. Bonnet went to the Vatican to see Msgr. (Louis) Tripepi, whom he used to meet often in former days. Bonnet made a twofold suggestion to him: first, that it would be sorrowful if the annual vacation trips of Archbishop (John J.) Keane became an occasion for disturbing the peace of the Church, as last year; second, it would be desirable for the Church in America that such social studies and activity that have flourished in Catholic Europe the last 30 years found some following in America. A meeting was held three years ago on that matter, but there was no sequel. Bonnet is not giving advice, but it is his desire to see (Corrigan) ever more loved and honored in the Church. P.S. (Corrigan) need not answer, for Bonnet is going at once to the East.

Bonnet, Father Joseph:
Rome (Italy)
to Archbishop (Michael Augustine Corrigan:
New York, New York)
Bonnet called on Cardinal Vincenzo Vannutelli about a manuscript Bonnet wishes to have printed. Vannutelli said he was in correspondence with (Corrigan) on financial matters. Bonnet explained the circumstances and utterances attending the last trip of Archbishop (John J.) Keane and how necessary that such a thing should not be repeated. Bonnet told Vannutelli why the Republican platform had been so openly advocated at St. Paul and why public opinion did not hold Archbishop (John) Ireland in greater esteem for it. His Eminence had a notion that the differences in America came from the nationalities. Bonnet told him that (Corrigan) was no more favorable than Ireland to undue preservation, for instance, of German privileges, and that the Catholic spirit made all the difference. The explanation pleased Vannutelli. Father Esbach, rector of the French Seminary and trusted exceptionally by the Pope, invited Bonnet to dinner. Bonnet told him that the manner assumed by Keane last September at Washington could only be constructed as an indication of change in the views of His Holiness. After Keane was recalled to Rome, was there protest in America? Where is the supposed popularity of those few prelates? Esbach seemed to feel the force of the argument and Bonnet hopes he will bring it to the right place.

Stoddard has always received 10% of the retail price of his books. Does this suit Hudson? He sends a sample of the letters the "Wonder Worker" is bringing. He is sending the Amber (Martha Everts Holden) notice to the Denslows. Her two books are selling like hot cakes. Stoddard dined with Mrs. Hodgson Burnett, lunched with the Cabot Lodges. He dined with Mollie Elliot Seawell to meet Mrs. Burnett and James Lane Allen. He attended a reception at Burnett's the night before she started for Europe. This afternoon he goes to Clayton Johns and this evening he spends with Queen Liluokalani. Sanford Dale is an old friend of Stoddard's.
