Huffer, Estelle E.:
Paris, (France)
to (James F. Edwards:
Notre Dame, Indiana)
They were extremely sorry to hear through the newspapers of the death of Father (William) Corby, (C.S.C.). They extend sympathy to Edwards as they know how very much Edwards has lost in the death of this good friend. Edwards must not feel discouraged at thus seeing his circle of dear friends at Notre Dame grow smaller. From the newspapers she learns that Father (John A.) Zahm, (C.S.C.) has been appointed Provincial.

His friend Mr. Fred Phillipson an old Notre Dame man of '94 is rather inclined to be an infidel; last evening he made an assertion that no man had ever been able to answer Bob Ingersoll's first statement that "Primary functions" are responsible for everything that exists. Weadcock asks Edwards the name of the priest who answered Ingersoll on that point.

Healy, J( ) F.:
Wainwright, Ohio
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, (C.S.C.):
Notre Dame, Ind(iana)
Healy expresses his appreciation of the worth of the Ave Maria. There are few Catholics in that vicinity and a great deal of prejudice, especially among the "Dutch" Moravians. He would like to have Hudson publish the Church's attitude on the public school question. Does the Church desire to abolish public free schools?

His family looks forward to the first week of every month because it brings the "Ave Maria", but the January number has not come to hand. He was hoping that their Jubilee Celebration might have tempted Edwards over the Atlantic. Busy he knows Edwards is as it seems part of his nature to be so. Fairhurst is still at the old work, no richer but keeping the blessings of good health and a happy home.

Phalen, Reverend F(rank) L.:
Concord, New Hampshire
to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.:
(Notre Dame, Indiana)
Phalen received "A Little Cloud out of the Sea" which contains a reference to his sermon on "Mary the Mother of Jesus". One or two statements are not fair. He holds to the divinity of Jesus but not to his deity. Do not Roman Catholics regard the Virgin as a divine being? He sends a sermon on "The Man of Galilee".

Gregori, Fannie:
Cormons, Austria
to (James F. Edwards:
Notre Dame, Indiana)
How badly Edwards must have felt to be away while poor Father Corby bid farewell to his Community! She had written Corby about the paper he had from her father. This paper was an obligation from a Mgr. Massareuti of Rome to give her father Lire 10,000. Corby tried to see if there was any way to realize this credit but in vain. She asks Edwards to send her a copy of the paper and see if the signature is legalized. She is sorry to hear the the Nativity has been copied not only by Sister Florentine but also by strangers She must beg Father (Andrew) Morrissey not to allow anyone to do it again unless they pay her $200. If the painting was not to be sold, it would be different.
