Blagden, Silliman: Boston, Mass(achusetts)
to Father D(aniel) E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Blagden was pleased with the extract from Archbishop (Patrick John) Ryan's address. Yes, (James) Cardinal Gibbons is indeed a "rara avis" - in the best sense. He is level-headed, and so American. He is the only man to fill the chair of the present pope. The "Brooklyn Standard Union", after publishing the article against suicide, struck off 20,000 copies in circular form. The "Utica Press" is now doing the same thing. He wants to get hold of a Chicago daily to do the same work, and asks Hudson's advice.

Donovan, T( ) M.: Rockhampton, Australia
to (Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): Notre Dame, Indiana

They have lost Bishop (John) Cani, the first bishop of the diocese. The Queensland diocese has lost Bishop (John) Hutchinson. Archbishop (Robert) Dunne is still with them. The Catholics of Queensland have been cursed in the majority of their priests. Drink has ruined them. A good many of their priests are French and Italian and cannot preach. Donovan has met only two priests he could respect. Hudson may be able to influence those in authority to help the Catholics of the distant diocese. Donovan's brother is a Jesuit, Father J( ) Donovan, S.J., now in Belgium; his sister is a Presentation nun, Sister Mary Francis, of Lismore, South Wales. If Hudson should doubt the statements in the letter, let him write to T( ) Kelly, one of the oldest and most respected Irish Catholics in the diocese. Enclosed is a clipping which quotes Dr. ( ) Dawes, Anglican Bishop of Rockhampton, on Cani's death.

(18)98 Mar. 11
Starbuck, Charles C.: Andover, Mass(achusetts)
to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Starbuck has an article on "The Real Borgia" in the March-April "Methodist Review". John Alfred Faulkner of Drew Divinity School wrote him that he ought to follow this up with an article on Savonarola. Stoddard's friends of the "Sacred Heart Review" quoted Roscoe's disparagement of the martyr. Modesty is hardly the besetting sin of the Jesuits. Those that declare their besetting sin to be implacable malice whenever offended are not altogether unprovided of proof. The strife in which he understands them to have criticized Father (John A.) Zahm, (C.S.C.), is characteristic. Their success in throwing Gioberti's work on the Index seems rather illusive than real. Starbuck's remembrances of the Civil War have been quite enough for him.

(1898) Mar.15
St. Joseph, Sister: Nagpur, (India)
to Father (Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.): (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Sister thanks Hudson for the money sent through the "Ave Maria." There are yet two poor houses more to close. They have applied for children and are hopeful, but the natives will do their best. The natives will not succeed—the Sisters have been promised a couple of hundred of them. The famine in one place was so severely felt that natives were selling their cattle for a rupee a head. The Government has sent a famine Commission all over India. May God grant they place a Religious in charge of Poor-houses. The natives in charge became rich by starving the poor. There was an awful riot in Bombay last week over measures taken to stop a plague. A Protestant lady offered several children who had no parents and added that they should be made Christians. Nearly every one in the District has one or more orphans from the famine. One little truant said he left his mother because she would not feed him, but she will take him back now that the rice has grown. He came from a place 500 miles away. The girls have their own orphanage and the boys have nearly completed theirs. They are now laying the foundation for a small dwelling with dispensary attached for their Sisters.

Starbuck, Charles C.: Andover, Mass(achusetts)
to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C.: (Notre Dame, Indiana)

Starbuck is sorry that Hudson should have received into the Ave Maria the romance about the baptism of the Prince of Wales. He read the full accounts of the baptism and there was not the slightest suggestion of irregularity. The correspondent tries to strengthen his case by something that is crushing against it. Starbuck has just had occasion to expose, in the Morning Star, a similar fabrication. It is time that this manufacture of history for the glory of the Roman Catholic Church should be stopped. It annoys Starbuck to be diverted from exposing Protestant misrepresentations in order to expose Catholic fabrications.
